ForeverMissed

This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Cathy Kenney, who passed away on May 11, 2021 after a tremendous battle with breast cancer.

Cathy was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1947 to Joyce and Gale Frederick.  She grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana with her three siblings, Mike, Leona, and Jimmy.  She eventually found her way to Colorado, following her friend Kathi Shubert (later to be Kathi Higgins).  Cathy loved the mountains of Colorado and took up residence at 8,000 feet in Bailey where she had her 2 children, Michelle and Kyle. In 2012 she again followed her best friend, Kathi, to Denver where she cared for her for several years.  She spent her final years living with her children and her final days holding her first grand child, Catherine, born April 9th.

Cathy was a true caregiver who loved animals, particularly boxers, softball, and chocolate milk. Many will remember her for her sense of humor and ability to make the most staunch curmudgeon smile.

She is survived by her two children and her new granddaughter, Catherine, named in honor of her grandmother.

I miss talking to Cathy. I haven't been able to delete her number from my phone yet and find myself calling her number before I realize what I am doing. She was always so much fun. When we were kids we were forbidden to go to the river which was close to our homes. So, of course, that's where we went every chance we could. We would put a hook on string and go fishing. When we caught anything we would give it to an old man who fished there a lot; otherwise we would throw the fish back. It worked really well - Cathy would bait the hooks (I still won't touch a worm) and I would unhook the fish. I know she is looking down on all of us and wanting us to live the best life we can and to think of her not with sorrow but with joy from having known her as a friend. But I will still miss her.

It may happen once in a lifetime, if you are really lucky, to find a very special friend. And I was very lucky when Cathy's family moved next to mine in 1952. We hit if off immediately. I will miss talking with Cathy, but she has been so strong and so brave for such a long time, I'm happy that she is no longer suffering. I will also miss all the boxer stories-when we were kids we hung out at the fire station across the street; their mascot was a boxer named Brutus who we played ball with a lot. That's what started her love for boxers. When I think of Cathy, I will think about all the fun we had growing up together. And, boy we did have fun. She raised two great children, has a wonderful son-in-law and a beautiful granddaughter. Through all her illness she still kept her sense of humor. My parents thought of her as their third daughter and I always considered her my "sister". I will miss her so much. Rest in peace, my friend. Love you, Judy

Cathy, you were the bravest person and most generous friend. You always thought of others before yourself and gave everything you had to help others. Your passion for your children, grandchild, animals and friends was amazing. To have had the privilege of calling you friend was truly an honor! I hope to take just a little bit of you and carry on your passion and loving kindness. Rest well, my friend. I will never forget you and will love you forever. God bless you and your family.

My dearest Cathy,
I am so sad to hear of your passing. We had such great times as neighbors and I so miss watching those two amazing children of yours grow up. You will be forever missed. Your fight was courageous and you are in heaven now and at peace. Kyle and Michelle have a wonderful guardian angel. Kyle and Michelle, please reach out if you need anything at all. Still right next door to the old house. Love you guys

"Crash"

That was what Cathy called me after I backed into her car at the bowling alley in Bailey.  Yep, there used to be a bowling alley in Bailey!  I had the pleasure of working with Cathy for almost 10 years at the Platte Canyon School District Office.  We had so many laughs and so much fun.  Her favorite thing to do was call people and sing happy birthday very badly.  She recruited many of us in the district office to join her and we called spouses, children, and friends much to their embarrassment!  Cathy also memorized license plate numbers of cars and could tell who was at the district office at any given time just by looking at the license plate numbers of the cars parked in the parking lot.  One of the recent memories I have with Cathy is when she had two tickets to a Colorado Rockies game and she invited me to go.  I came to town and we rode the light rail into downtown Denver.  When we got to the downtown station, I followed the wrong people and took a wrong turn walking to the ballpark!  It took us forever to get to the ballpark, but she did not complain and we spent the extra time talking and catching up as we had not seen each other in a while.  We finally made it to the ballpark at the third inning and we still had so much fun!  Cathy loved going to the Spaghetti Factory and Denver Zoo Lights, a treat we received from our superintendent Dr. Walpole every Christmas.  I am sad that Cathy and I did not get to spend much time together in the past year.  I was really looking forward to going to a Rockies game with her, taking her to the Zoo lights and bringing her up to the mountains she loved.  I will miss her so much.  Love you forever my friend!  Crash

How’s the Foot?

May 21, 2021
Cathy and I had the best inside joke that would always confuse Michelle:
Cathy: How’s the foot?
Me: It’s going good, thanks!

Sorry Michelle, you’ll never get it...
