Catherine (“Cathy”) Hogan, 68, of Blacksburg, Virginia passed away on May 21, 2017.

Cathy was born in Niagara Falls, New York to Thomas and Hazel (Mort) Costella on August 23rd, 1948 . She grew up in Philadelphia and later lived in five different U.S. states and Canada, spending much of her life as a resident of McLean, Virginia. She married her lifelong love, Richard Hogan, in 1969. Together they raised two daughters, Catherine and Victoria.

Cathy found her greatest joy in nurturing children, both as a mother and as a teacher and childcare provider for over thirty years. She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as she enriched the lives of hundreds of children throughout her career. More recently, she savored her role as Grandma “C.C.” to her three granddaughters.

As a mom, she served as a shining example of kindness, courage, and determination to her girls. It was often the little things she did that were so special: she would hide notes in her daughters’ camp bags for them to find later, make cars out of vegetables to encourage well-rounded diets, and throw amazing holiday parties for them and their friends.

Cathy was also known for her incredible selflessness and the many ways she cared so deeply for others. She was a beloved friend, and had a knack for making those around her feel special. She was also an expert conversationalist and would gladly talk to anyone, often leaving them in stitches thanks to her wonderful sense of humor.

She loved to travel and spent time in twenty-one different countries on five continents, and was especially fond of the Maldives, Vietnam, and cross-country road trips.

She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Langford (Matthew D.) and Victoria Moore (Kevin E.), her grandchildren, Elise and Claire Langford and Elizabeth Moore, and her siblings, David and Ron Costella. She joins her husband, parents, and siblings (Peggy Taylor and Tom Costella) in heaven.

A viewing will be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Virginia on Saturday, May 27th from two to four.

Cathy meant the world to my family. I first met her when I was a new mom and she was everything I needed. Her wealth of knowledge and compassion for children was extraordinary and I soaked up everything she had to offer. My first two daughters benefitted from her kindness, her lessons, her guidance, and her unending love. I asked her millions of questions in those days and she always had an answer and the best advice. When she moved across the country back to the East Coast and to Virginia, we missed her terribly and kept in touch sporadically. In fact, when my oldest daughter was at a Model UN conference at Georgetown for her 16th birthday, Cathy went and decorated her dorm room which was the best surprise ever! Also, the few times we did see her in McClane, VA, while visiting the east coast over the following years, it was as if no time had passed at all. She was my first and best mentor as a nurturer of children. Her children, Tori and Cathyann, who are now amazing, wonderful and brilliant women are just one example of her terrific guidance. I was lucky enough to get to catch up with her briefly at her daughter, Tori's wedding, which was wonderful and, like before, it was as if no time had passed.
She will definitely be missed, but never forgotten. We love you Cathy and Tori and Cathyann!

Dear Cathy, dear Cathyann and Tori,

Today is the celebration of your life and we were so honored to be part of your life. You welcomed Philippe not only in your daycare, but in your family and heart as well. You welcomed all of us. You and your girls and Rich have been so important to us and you taught us so much. Your love was always there and unconditionally so. You knew your priorities and the children thrived because of it. You touched so many lives and our lives as well and we are so grateful for it. Your girls were ALWAYS your first priority and you were a mom first always. Being so proud of Cathyann and Tori. Proud of all their many exceptional achievements, but mostly because of their characters. And of course because of Elise, Claire and Elizabeth. Philippe and Victor will always have the memories of the farm with Spud and Kell Belle and the other children. They will always remember playing with clothespins in the bottle. The icy lollipops, the Clifford birthday cake, playing with little sticks flowing downstream after it rained along the curbside and of course the trips to the mailbox ("Bill, bills, bills, nothing but bills"). Birthday parties, trips to the farm and Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Philippe speaking 'Cathy's language'. Too many valuable and precious memories to put into words, but they will always be with us. Cathy, you truly left a trail of beautiful memories, because you were such a beautiful soul. You, the girls and Rich are in our hearts. ❤️

A tribute to Cathy:
Yes, you left us too soon, but you are forever with us. You were a powerful force, especially for your family, children and the underdog. You were the best of the best always ready to give. You had the biggest heart of anyone I have ever known. You blessed your gilrls by showing them in so many ways what unconditional love means, how important they were and are, always number one. Cathy you made them feel so loved and safe and you did that for all of us too. It felt so good to be loved by you, you always made everything right. I learned so much about life from you, you were the common sense person I could always turn to, I will miss you so much. You always had the right answers and we laughed so so much. We shared many happy times, you were a gift to us for a short while but your memory will be eternal. You are forever a part of our lives, until we meet again, we will make you proud and live this wonderful thing called life, just as you did. Love always,
Alexis, Andrew, Nick, Natalie and Baby Amanda:))

Cathy: Thank you so very much for being a second "mom" to Spud and Kell Bell. We have so many wonderful memories of spending time with you visiting the farm or just hanging out at Halloween when you always dressed as a witch. I am excited to be early to leave this tribute so that I don't get blamed for being on Aimee-time. Say "hi" to Rich and make sure to wear your navy blue dress so that he recognizes you :) Aimee
