Granny it’s Thanksgiving Day. Another holiday remembering how it used to be. It would never be the same because you were the one who kept it together. I try to recreate a Thanksgiving but without you it’s hard. Thanksgiving is everyday in my heart. I thank God for the times we spent together. Didn’t have to be anything special. Just being together. So granny I hope to see you again.
All my love.

Granny

It’s Labor Day weekend. Derrick and I would be spending this weekend with you. Knowing the music and parties never stop. As much as you liked to dance you complained the music kept you up all night.
Derrick looked forward to all the West Indian food. That was his favorite part of the weekend. How we miss spending these holidays with you. Dance and enjoy the music while looking down on us. We will be thinking of you with love in our hearts.

Granny,
One year ago today, God took me to your side as I held you close in my arms, singing songs and reciting the 23rd Psalm with you, not knowing I was singing to you for the last time, not knowing it would have been the last time I would hear your voice in this earthly realm. Today I am strong because of your strength, I am faithful because of your strong faith in God which taught me that God is bigger than anything we can face. I miss you, the kids miss you, we all miss you, but each day I feel your presence, as I talk to you and give you updates on what's happening in my life and with the family. Life is not the same without you around, but I know you're keeping a watchful eye on us, "buzzing" around to let us know you are still here. Thanks granny for your prayers that kept us all our lives and yes granny, I still have your handwritten prayer you gave me so many years ago, tucked safely in my wallet with me every single day. Just a closer walk with thee, granted Jesus is my plea, daily walking close to thee, let it be dear Lord let it be. That's all i can hope for granny. Thank you for being a faithful follower of Jesus, because it always gave you the victory and strength to go on. Thank God it is doing the same for me.  Happy anniversary in heaven granny and keep singing and dancing until we meet again. Love always.

Today I remember how I would have been with you. Nothing can compare to your love and kindness . So today 65 years ago you gave me life. Then you left on my birthday a year ago. I never got to say goodbye. There’s a pain in my heart so deep but I press on knowing you are smiling down and taking care of us. I remember you bringing us lunch and laying your tablecloth down when we were little girls in Barbados . Always giving. Then helping to raise the boys when I had to work . Today I celebrate you for always being there . Always strong and supportive. Family was always important to you. Thank you granny. Rest In Peace knowing your love will forever live in my heart.

How time flies! Who would believe it's already six months since our dear Granny went to be in her heavenly home.
Her presence will remain with us even though the days are not the same, holidays are not the same, birthdays are not the same.
Keep looking down on us Granny.
We love and miss you dearly.❤

Granny,
I will miss all of the times we spent together especially weekends making you fish cakes, coo coo, or baking you banana bread and special cakes like ginger, lemon, pineapple with raisins and cherries -‐all of which you enjoyed tremendously. You taught me how to cook and bake but I could never match your cooking skills. Sundays and holidays will not be the same without you. When you could no longer get out to church, we brought church to you joining you in singing some of your favorite hymns and sharing communion with you every first Sunday. How I'll miss your beautiful soprano voice carrying those high notes! You taught me so much but what I'll cherish most is your undying faith in God and your strength. Proverbs 31:10-31 tells your story and I pray that the rest of my life be spent with half of the faith and strength that you had during your lifetime.
Granny, until we meet again in glory, i will forever call you "blessed, loved and favored". Rest in eternal peace and joy.
Love,
Judy

Celeste, our dearest cousin, was an adorable person. Actually, growing up as children in Barbados she was more like a sister to us rather than a cousin.
Cee, as she was affectionately called by us, was a kind, generous, meticulous, selfless, and loving person. After she migrated to the U.S.A. and whenever we visited our mother who resided there at the time, Cee always made it possible to entertain us and joked about our growing-up days which were always filled with laughter. She loved her family dearly and gave generously to all. She will be sadly missed by the entire family circle.
Rest in Peace, dear Cee, and rise in glory. We hope to meet again someday, in Jesus' name.
Sybil, Shurla and family.

Granny,
You’ve taught me so much. At the time I couldn’t see it but now I see what the significance of everything you did and said meant. How I’m going to miss our times together. The days when the train wasn’t running and I would call to come over and you would have bakes, plantain and eggs ready.
Your love in helping with the boys when I was a young mom. You would come home after working all night and tell me to go sleep and you would watch the baby. What selfless love. I know I’m going to see you again and what a celebration we will have.
Rest until we meet again.

All my everlasting love,
Jill

Her Life

Our Granny

June 25, 2021
Esther Celeste Selman -Briggs was born on February 24, 1929 in Josey Hill, St. Lucy, Barbados, to Victor Hinds and Millicent Hurley Hinds. She was known by family and friends as Celeste.  She was one of nine siblings, three of whom are still alive-Joyce Carter (90), Clovene Deane (85), and Erold Hinds (82).  As children we called her "Ma" and later as the grands and great grands were born, she became affectionately known as "Granny". We were told that as a child growing up, she always loved the best  things which continued throughout her entire life. She attended St. Clement’s school in St. Lucy.   In September of 1950 she married Cecil Carlisle Selman and that union produced five children- Dianne, Judy,  Jill , Sherry and Hugh (Cheddie)
Her strong faith in God was instilled  in her children and she made sure that they sought the Lord through attending church services, related events and Sunday school teachings.
In 1966 she emigrated to the United states in search of the "better life" for her family.  Initially she worked as a nanny and later with the famous singer Tony Bennett which was the highlight of her blossoming life in the United States. Those experiences led her to broaden her horizons, becoming certified as a Pediatric and Geriatric Nursing Attendant.  In 1970 she joined the staff at Brooklyn Jewish hospital as a Nursing Attendant in the Neonatal  Intensive Care Unit (NICU)  This unit of Nursing held a special place in her heart, since her youngest daughter Sherry was a"preemie" and weighed only 4 pounds 4 ounces at birth.  However, in 1995 after twenty-five years of faithful and dedicated service, she retired from the work she loved and enjoyed.  She continued her quest to care for those in need, by establishing her home in Brooklyn as a NYC approved Adult Home.  In addition to her busy life, she loved traveling, cooking, baking, babysitting, gardening  taking long walks, singing, dancing and feeding the hungry.  She was known for her many elegant hats and no outfit was complete without one of them. She was a member of Kingslawn Presbyterian Church but had spent many years at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Brooklyn.
In March of 2015, she suffered a heart attack, followed by a stroke in July of that same year. Her failing health led to a hospitalization on April 12, 2021 and on April 26 she was transferred  to Seacrest Nursing Home for rehabilitation.  in spite of her pain and health challenges her faith in God never wavered. On Saturday June 19, 2021, Jesus  called our beloved " Granny" home very peacefully to her eternal rest.
She leaves to mourn her three siblings, her five beloved children, Dianne Selman-Olatunde, Judy Selman , Jill Selman, Sherry (Freager Saunders 111), Cheddie, her grandchildren- Kathy(Marcus) Chris, Shane,  Matthew(Shauntae ) Derrick, Lance (Chrissy) Sean, her adopted grand daughter Carol Ann Dixon (Kyani, Taya ), Freager IV and Lance S (Michele) her eleven great grandchildren-Cade, Sydney,  Camryn, Crista,  Logan, Nash, Blake, Amar, Landon, Cali, and Layson, several cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives , her church family and friends here and abroad .

Granny,
We all know how much you loved the Christmas season with family and sharing.  So this Christmas, we wanted to do something special in memory of you.  We decided that we would distribute gifts in the form of care packages to the residents at Seacrest Nursing Home where you spent your last days.  Thirty-six gifts bags were lovingly packed with socks, soap, wash cloths. body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes & holders, note pads and/or word search books. pencils, chocolates and candy canes.
Gill and I delivered them to the nursing home on Wednesday. Dec 22   Due to the pandemic, nstead of us going up to the floor, we left them with Nurse Farida who gladly accepted them on behalf of the residents on 4 East.  For the nursing staff who were so caring and compassionate, we brought them a gourmet basket filled with teas, coffee, chocolates, cheese, crackers and jam.  This is what you would have wanted so we know you are pleased.
Missing you,
Have a Merry Christmas in heaven

Granny,
4 year old (soon to be five) little Blakie came to me a couple of days ago with a little green toy.  She told me Nashie had told her it was an orphan.  I looked at the toy and I told her it was actually a leprechaun.  I asked her if she knew what an orphan was and she said no, so I told her it was a person who no longer had a mom or a dad.  Then I said, Blakie I'm now an orphan because I don't have a mom or dad anymore- they are both in heaven.  She didn't say anything at first and then out of the blue she said,  grandma, my mommy and daddy could be your mom and dad.  I didn't know what to say.  So granny, your little Blakie doesn't want me to be an orphan anymore not if she has anything to say about it.  Rest well granny!

" One out-numbers six"

July 6, 2021
As a young college student, I worked at a residential home for emotionally challenged young children.  I attended classes from 8:00am -1:00pm and then worked the evening shift at the residential home from 3:00pm- 10:00pm.  On my way home one night, I found myself in a predicament that only a "Ma" or "Pa" could fix.  I had just gotten off the bus and started walking towards home, which was only one long block away.  A few feet into my walk, I noticed four young men walking in front of me and as I looked back, another two were behind me.  My first impulse was to run, but instinct told me to go back to the store and wait in safety.  Having no cell phone, I used the pay phone to call home.  When Ma answered I told her I thought that six guys were about to mug me.  She asked where I was and I told her, so she told me to "stay right there".  I waited nervously in the store and about 5 minutes later,  Ma arrived carrying the longest knife I had ever seen.   I looked at her as if to say "what are you going to do with that!"
She looked at me and said "let's go" and we left the store with Ma brandishing her weapon and me right along side of her.   The six guys - well,  no where in sight!  That was my Ma/ Granny- Don't mess with her family!
