With this memorial we remember and cherish Chandler "Chad" Martin Lucas who was born April 19, 1944 in Astoria, Oregon to the proud parents of Chandler Lucas and Inez Violet Lucas. Chandler passed on September 23, 2021 in Fort Myers, Florida. Chandler is survived by his wife of 46 years marriage, Shirley Lucas, and two of his sisters, Janet Jones of Austin,Texas and Virginia Schoonover of Ocala, Florida, along with several nieces and nephews. We cannot forget his children of the four-legged nature: Rosie, Yetta, Coach and Bolt plus Rusty who recently passed.

When Chandler and Shirley met each other, their dedicated song to each other was "Cherish" by the Association. To hear the song click the speaker in the upper right hand corner. Please take a moment to listen to the words.

Personal eulogy to be presented at services by Chana Dahan:
"Chandler Lucas, a man of commitment, loyalty and integrity unsurpassed, and his wife Shirley, a faithful Witness of his love, hard work and optimism, walked a journey together of 46 years. In this journey many lives were touched and good causes were helped by the laborious hands of this blessed couple.
Now Chad has been called to continue his journey up above. He gave all of us his smile and sweet special humor to shine some light to many people even in hard times. Chad was very kind, humble and smart, one of a kind. He will be dearly missed by everybody who got the blessing to share with him. He is now in the most special place a soul can be: in Heaven and within his friend's and wife's heart."
INFO ABOUT CHAD:
Chandler's nickname of Chad was given to him by his wife Shirley. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, plus training the German Shepherd dogs. In his younger years he played Jai-alai plus baseball in addition to working for Dade County Sheriff's Dept. Chad totally enjoyed driving for a really long distance. He was excellent at driving and maneuvering a vehicle into difficult positions as evidenced by him winning second place two different years in Lee County competition. Chad truly believed in kindness and was sensitive to others' needs and never wanted for himself. Absolutely he was a rare individual being very giving of himself to strangers and animals. Chad was like a big teddy bear with a very kind soft heart towards animals and little children. In fact, Chad whole-heartedly enjoyed his job working with impaired children. He declared these people were more compassion and real than most adults. Shirley feels lucky to have had such a great compassionate "real human being" to be part of her life for so many decades to fill it with warmth, loyalty and love beyond reproach. If only the world could learn from this kind humble man.
Chad's Philosophy of Life: Life is not about the money you have or the position you hold in society. Life is about the wealth you have by helping others and the position you have in others' hearts.
FUNERAL SERVICES:
Memorial Services will be officiated by Rabbi Lawrence Dermer of Shalom Life Center on Thursday September 30, 2021 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, Florida 33097. To The Love of My Life:
No amount of words will ever express the intensiveness of our love, affection and admiration. It was taken from us pre-maturely and you were denied your reward of retirement. I am so so sorry for that. You brought me flowers all the time to surprise me when there was no special occasion. Your desire to make me happy was more beautiful than the flowers. Thank you for 48 years of your life and humor plus undeniable support. Remember who loves you baby. Forever.

Your Wifie

Shirely, just a note on this one year anniversary of Chad's departure to say how often I think of him (and you), and how less bright this world is without him. I'm very sure he and all your canine kids are watching over you and never far away.

I met Chad through his wife Shirley a year ago. They are my landlords. I am saddened at his passing for the world truly has lost a good man. Chad and Shirley are the hardest-working couple I've ever met. They were inseparable as a team, not necessarily driven by the dollar but more of a desire to help people. Integrity, honesty and truly a good, caring heart in both of them. In these covid times, when one's life can be turned upside down overnight, he understood and was always willing to work with people to make sure they have a roof over their head and are doing well. You don't meet men like Chad often and I am honored to have known him for the short time that I have. Everyone I know that knew him, loved and respected him. May he rest in peace and I know he is in a better, happier place and is missed by many.

Chad it seems like only yesterday that you & Shirley went out on my boat for Thanksgiving. I remember how your Miami Dolphins hat flew off when I did a high speed turn & we fished it out of the water. Good times never felt So Good. You were Shirley's soulmate & her loving husband. I loved your dry sense of humor & how you supported Shirley in all of ,her many projects. I learned that you were a bus driver & that you enjoyed driving. I cherished the time I knew you & will always remember our friendship. You are not gone, you are on one of your bus trips. I hope to see you again in heaven. Safe travels my friend.

Sincerely,

Diamond Dave

Even though we've only known Shirley and Chad for a few years, they are family to us. There are a few instances where we spent quite some time together. The main things we knew about Chad were his sense of humor and love of blueberry muffins. Every time we were together, it was dealing with or looking for future properties (go figure, right?). He disliked jumping from house to house, so he often refused to go in. He would say something like "I've seen this house before. It has 4 walls and white baseboards. Seen one, you've seen 'em all." While Chad kept things light, he was always very helpful. We appreciated Chad a lot, consider it a privilege to have known him, and will miss him.

Heaven gained a beautiful Angel when chad left us. He had such a great sense of humor, always cracking jokes making us laugh! We are forever grateful to the Lucas’s for giving us an opportunity no one else wanted to. Shirley and chad have become our great friends and my heart truly breaks knowing that chad is no longer here with us, however i am grateful i was able to see him before he passed. Chad was such an an amazing person, and knew so many things, such an extremely intelligent guy. He was just an all around great person with a heart of gold, anyone who met him couldn’t not like him, he was just a very likable guy. So we are just so deeply saddened that he is no longer here with his wife, and everyone who loves him. I was fostering two kittens for a week and one day when chad came over he seen them and said “what are those, giant rats?” I laughed so hard, i will miss his jokes. We love you chad and Shirley, our friends who feel more like family! Jaime and i will always be here for you.

My dear friend Shirley, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. It seems as though your husband's last days brought us together and the nurse in me was worried about you also. Sometimes when we are caring for our loved ones, we seem to forget about ourselves. I never had a chance to meet Chad but I've heard such loving things about him. Shirley, I'm here for you if you need anything.

Our deepest condolences go out to Shirley and family. We met you both when we picked our beautiful German Shepherd pup, Cabo from one of their litters in 2010. In 2013, we bred our Cabo with their pup Darth and kept a female from the litter and named her Zeta. Shirley and Chad were so very helpful with the litter when we were going through a very difficult time. Cabo and Zeta are doing wonderful. What a blessing you were to us. Love, Lisa & Ken

Chad was everything you want in a friend or partner. A loving and compassionate man, who was highly skilled in a number of demanding areas and yet as modest as they come. A quiet guy, to most, but if you knew him well he had a sparkling wit. It was a pleasure and privilege to have known you and Shirley.

I have such fun memories of Chandler growing up. My sisters and I would rough house and get in all sorts of trouble with Chandler. One time dad bought us a watermelon and all us girls and Chandler started to eat it in the dining room which was tiny. The next thing I knew we were having an all out seed fight. The seeds were flying everywhere and the laughter brought down the house. Needless to say mom and dad didnt think it was so funny!

Chad and Shirley were the only people we knew when we moved to Ft Myers from the Caribbean. They supported us as we started our lives together. At the park in downtown Ft Myers Chad married us and Shirley was the only witness except for a random jogger. Now a couple weeks short of 36 years together we are forever grateful for Chad and Shirley joining us together and their kindness.

A couple of years back we called Chad and Shirley on our anniversary. In customary Chad humor he laughed and commented on the number of years that had passed. In perfect Chad style he said “ you know that was only a ten year deal you can quit anytime.”
We love you Shirley and Chad. Peace be with you both.

Chad’s was a life well lived; his quiet presence had a way of bringing calm and peace and a sense of reassurance to those around him. His gentle humor, his kindness, and his innate goodness as a human being will be sorely missed in this world.

Shirley, you and Chad and the love you shared were rocks of stability in my life at a time my world was chaos. I know he was the center of your world, and I know the strength of that love will carry you forward.

CHAD LUCAS was one of the most humble, generous, kind, hard working gentlemen I have known in my life of 74 years having visited the friendship of musicians (Paul Simon, Gene Simmons, Steven Tyler etc.). And political clients in the Whitehouse, Astronauts, Catholic clergy and many Lee County real estate associates .
Shirley is a good judge of life choices. She, as well, is loved by many
I'll miss you and your dry satirical humor, Chad, and your expressed compliments and suggestions for my many shared culinary efforts. My world is a better place because you lived.
