I cannot even believe this news. This is such a huge shock. Charles you were like my best friend, brother and confidant all rolled in one. You were always the voice of wisdom and reasoning. Not long ago you were giving your views on the best vaccine and other topics. You were always there to advise me on issues I was unsure of. I sent a message to you on WhatsApp only to be told you had passed . Rest in God's bosom. May God strengthen your dear wife and kids at this difficult time. And may God give your family the strength to bear this great loss.

"Now the darkness falls the sun is going down,
One by one the stars are coming out,
The Tide comes in washing footprints from the sand,
As one day ends a new day must begin.

Tears will leave no stain,
Time will ease the pain,
For every light that fades,
Something beautiful remains."

Eteks, You were a core member of Xtended Family that formed in London from the late 1980s.
We all grew together, hung out together, extended our immediate core to our wider families of wives and children. Indeed, ours with you remained a true brotherhood to the end.
We thank God for your time here with us, the joys, the laughter, the piss-taking, the quarrels and then the makeups. You truly helped us to display all that it is to be human and brothers. Thank you for the kindness that you showed, the words of encouragement that you gave and the prayers that you prayed for us.
It has been difficult for us all to come to terms with your leaving us but we shall never forget you. We shall look out for Patricia and the children like brothers look out for one another.
Oh dear brother, rest well in the bossom of the Lord till we meet again someday. We miss you.

*EXIT OF A DEPENDABLE VOICE*

The Board, Directorates and Members of *1001+Voices for People's Empowerment* are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of *Mr. Charles Ekanem*. Until his death , he was Deputy Chairman in the Directorate of Research, Strategy and Engagement.

A versatile, creative and astutely so engaging a personality, Late Mr. Ekanem, while alive was the founder and CEO of the United Kindom- based FifthCapital Associates; a business creation and transformation organization reputable with hands-on expertise in the deployment of innovative technology to bringing about increased corporate performance, high revenue yields and extensive growth in businesses, especially among start-up enterprises.

In a stirring tribute to the deceased family and Associates of the departed turn around expert, National Co-ordinator of 1001+Voices, Obong Ide Owodiong-Idemeko, has described late Charles Ekanem as one of the most cerebral, brilliant and engaging minds who helped in the conception, development and broad implementation of the core vision associated with the group initiative of Inspiring, developing and empowering the next generation of Nigerians to good governance practice and selfless leadership.

"He obviously brought these attributes to bear on the planning, structure and organisation of our people-oriented project", Owodiong in his statement has noted, adding that " Ekanem's sterling and enormously reputable contributions has resulted in the tremendous impact the group has recorded across the state within its brief but incredibly amazing period of existence."

Late Mr. Ekanem, who was reputed to be an ex student of Kings College, Lagos, and University of Jos, respectively, also had a brilliant academic stint with the University of Schillar, UK, where he did his Masters and research projects in development technology among others.

The statement which further added that such a brilliant and consummate mind will be sorely missed by all, also stressed that society has indeed missed an indefatigable and prodigious innovator, conceptualizer and distinct business developer. "Our organization in particular and also those who have had the rare opportunity of associating or coming in professional to contact with him will sadly miss him", Owodiong has said.

1001+ Voices the statement said, in praying the Almighty God to grant eternal repose to the soul of late Mr. Charles Ekanem, has encouraged the family, friends and associates of the departed genius the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.  It has stressed that while the cost of the demise has indeed been enormous, the group cannot measure its share of imminent and unquantifiable loses that may be computed with this sudden and shocking passage of a very distinguished and noble mind.

Firstly, i wish to thank God for allowing me to cross paths with Charles. Charles, my mentor, whom i met in 2012 when i was going through a career crisis, he mentored me, I am hardworking and focused because he was reminding me to press on and think outside the box. He was there through the valleys - cancer, spinal injury, my husband's death. Charles, your daily prayers, sharing of the word, daily reminders to stay strong and focused on God made me pull through, i met God again through you and the darkness fell below my shoulders. I gained a friend and an only brother, i will miss your encouraging ways, the songs, pictures of nature and articles you shared. I learnt the importance of walking with God daily and making a difference in the lives of others from you.
I remember you once told me we cross paths with people for a reason, a season or a lifetime but you were all of the above, always remembered until we meet again.
He was selfless, a man after God's heart with a passion for family...One of a kind. Go well brother.

The news of Etekamba's passing relayed to me by his loving wife Patricia hit me like a bolt. Etekamba and I are friends and also kinsmen. We came to know each other through our parents, who were very close friends. We grew in our friendship from 1973. In 1974, whilst he was admitted in Kings College, I was admitted in St Gregory's College Lagos. Our friendship continued through to adulthood even though we attended different universities. Whilst we miss Etekamba, we must recognize that there is more to life than our brief sojourn here on earth. So rather than be weighed down through mourning, let us also celebrate Etekamba's life and the measure of its worth, and every single life he touched while he was on this earth.

We wish to pay our last respects and thank you for your friendship and all the memories we hold dear. It’s been a privilege to have known you. We were family, not just friends, and we will carry you in spirit until we meet up once again. Amen.

We also pray for strength and comfort for the family left behind on the loss of a loving father, husband and friend. Amen.

We have been in shock since since we heard of the demise of our dear friend Charles. Charles had been a friend of the family for many years, and even though we hadn't t been seeing often we were always in touch checking in on each other.  However, we shared some very special moments with him and his family.
We will always remember Charles as a great fun loving and hardworking friend, he was always cheerful regardless of the challenges he may have been facing.
One event that we recall vividly was how Charles planned my 'Stag do' which was a great fun filled evening.
Thank you for the laughter and fun you brought into our lives, it is certainly going to be very difficult to get over this loss.
Charles, you will be sorely missed Farewell my friend. May your soul rest in peace - Toyin & Temi Awofala

Charles Etekamba Ekanem!

While finding words is not usually an issue with me, only now, in the fifth evening after learning our Maker has called you home, have I found the words to express my shock and sadness.

Firstly, I must apologise to Patricia for the ramble that was supposed to be me trying to console you. This has been very hard to process. Suffice to say I pray the Lord who placed Charles in your life will cradle and strengthen you and the young people up in the difficult days ahead.

Charles! You supported our family when we lost a much-loved person fifteen years ago and effectively became an honorary Sierra Leonean. On the anniversary of that loss just over three weeks ago you told me of the numbness you still felt. Who would have thought so much numbness would be deployed in your name so soon?

You were a good, wise and loyal man, and you had an infectious enthusiasm that was on an altogether different level. I pray that you are granted a peaceful rest, and that your family find it to be true that “blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”.

Au revoir Charles

Still in a bit of a daze. This seems so unreal, yet real it clearly is.

We travelled a long road you and I, intermittent but with significant touch points. From 44 years back as my senior in Kings College Lagos, to playing basketball in Chiswick with Xtended Family, to being the MC at my wedding in early 20 years ago. We've stayed in touch via our basketball/social WhatsApp group and you posted only the day before.

A gentleman, a scholar, sharp, witty, infectious, funny, and human like the rest of us. Ete always made an impact.

You will be sorely missed, ever loved and always remembered by those you touched.

Rest well friend.

Floreat!

Almost 4 decades....
From the heady youthful days of Baker Street,
right through the bastions of life's maturity,
to the sultry heat of the emergence of the "new economically empowered Africa" we had envisioned then and which you were feverishly doing your part to best implement until Wednesday 3rd March....

You were, My Brother, then and ALWAYS
A God-fearing Soul....
THE impeccable Gentleman....
Firm and Fair...
"Integritas sit Amet!"
"Semper Fi!"

One of the few in this our world who I can say, ALWAYS sought to play it straight!
(The tributes here vouch for this....)

Yet, we must see to the remainder of our days without your goodself now eh?
Hmmm...
Those endless debates will now ring hollow without your input ooh Ole Bwoyy..!

Etek, thank you for being a bid brother, a friend and a protector. This is really hard for me to write because I am still in the foggy stage of realizing your gone from our sight but never from our hearts. I will always be grateful to you and Pat for helping me get through my early days in London. You shared your culture, friendship and wisdom with this native American. You were a big part of this same American girl growing up with "that can do" attitude becuse of the faith you showed in me and your positive and optimistic outlook on life. Thank you for being Molefi's Godfather he could not have been more blessed than to have you and Pat. I will miss your daily thoughts, and the other wonderful prayers you would send. I am really feeling the lost of my friend. But you're home now with Our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ, so rest big brother in the glory and enteral peace in Paradise.

Goodnight, Etekamba; your earthly journey has ended.
Your struggles has ceased.
Time to close your eyes to happy dreams.
And wake to eternal peace in heaven.

Ete, the road is no longer long.
No more windy paths,
Just a silver beam of radiant light.
That will take you home.

Ete, you are free from pain, you fight no more.
That's all we wish for, from the ones we love.
And to protect us from above.

The grief we feel will be as endless as our love for you.
Until we meet again at those pearly gates.
Goodnight.

Eteks, you were a brilliant, fantastic, and loving man who was always thinking and talking at the speed of light as well as easy to laugh. Although you were two years ahead in secondary school, we had great cameraderie in adult life. One of my fond memories of you that will always remain is how often you would refer and include your darling wife by adding the words "Patricia..." during our phone conversations and face-to-face meets over the late 2000s and early 2010s. Since that period, we have rarely been in contact as life demands and city locations have altered. Nevertheless, your departure from this mortal realm is such shocking and eye-watering news.

By the grace of Almighty God, may Patricia, Myles, Ryanna and family members find the guidance, strength and solace to bear your unexpected loss and be carried through this tragedy. We also thank Almighty God for your life, achievements, and legacy. May your sweet and noble soul rest in peace.

Ete
I was just as shocked as others
Heard you were expressing your views on the extended family group the night before and gone the night after.
Despite meeting for only fleeting periods you have remarked the lanes of life we often forget over and over again.
You have said yours, it is for others to piece together and make peace with it.
Nothing changes who we are except us, and that is also part of who we are.
Maybe, just hoping that maybe we can all celebrate your life and what you have left behind.

Dear Charles

I was a jagged stone, that washed up at your feet. My edges sharp, you picked me out, instructed me to stay behind, I was afraid.

You recognised something, that made you look closer and listen intently. (Your first lesson)

I had never met anyone like you before or since.

You began slowly, you measured me (Your second lesson).

You then went to work, shaping me, while holding me up to the light. (Your third lesson).

You repeated this approach for 22 years.

We have lost you now, however we hold on, looking for more jagged stones.

RIP My Brother, My Friend, My Boss, YNWA.

I loved to call you Etekamba & always asked about your sister Ansa! My heart ♥️ is deeply broken with your sudden passing! My fellow Liverpool supporter! Always wise-cracking a diversity of jokes mostly in season!

Doesn’t talk much but when he does you just want to hear him whether you agree with him or not! Lights up any & every situation! A great Liverpool critic when we lose & a greater fan when we win!

A thorough gentleman to the core! Liverpool lost again yesterday & I missed you very very seriously! It’s still so surreal as we were on that zoom call together last Saturday!

I don’t want to bore people here at all! It’s just nice to be able to share something too! I’m still in shock! Patricia Myles & Ryanna will be very very fine! Our God Will Make sure of that!

Sleep on my brother & my friend until that glorious Resurrection Morning! Haa Etekamba!!! !!!

Dearest Etekamba, who can walk into a room full of strangers and walk out with friends. Generous with his time when we were in Portugal on vacation, two of our kids had to come home to the UK for their GCSE exams and they needed a lift from Heathrow Airport to get to Milton Keynes, Ete got them home safely and ensured they were comfortable as it was during winter. One of the god-father to our oldest, he was always available for a chat with his God-son and offered advise when needed - just a tiny sample of your generous, kind spirit. I still can't believe you're gone, too young and too soon - this will take me a while to process. We will miss your infectious smile and laughter, you will be sorely missed, never be forgotten by your friends and loved ones. I pray that God grants your loved ones the strength with which to bear this great loss. Rest on in peace dear Eteks my bro, your daily struggles are over, rest on till we meet again.

Etekamba my brother, our last discussion was on 15th January 2021 and we were comparing notes on our exercise regimes. We were both motivated to achieve our goals and lose weight, we even talked about various aids to stay safe during this pandemic. On the 17th January you also asked me to partake in a survey on one of your customer experience products you were going to sell to EKO DISCO. Little did I know that would be our last conversation. We have been friends beyond the social circle and basketball but also in business. We have shared so many good memories and I wished it could continue! Only God knows why you have to go so soon! We remain in shock but take comfort from the understanding that you are now in the craddle of the Almighty Lord. Sleep well. From SNAI and Akintunde family.

Wow!! Eteks!! What can I say? My childhood friend and god-father to my eldest son. Through all the ups and downs that we have been through over the last 40 odd years, I never ever imagined that we would lose you like this. I remember the lovely memories we made together, the laughter and the camaraderie and console myself with the fact that only The Almighty knows best and I'm glad we made the most of the time God gave us together. I pray that He gives your family the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Don’t worry my brother, rest in peace and remember that I will always have your peeps backs.

His Life

Charles Etekamba Ekanem (1964 - 2021)

March 7, 2021
Charles Etekamba Ekanem was born on 12th May 1964 in Plymouth, England; the only son of the late Navy Captain Asuquo Okon Edet Ekanem (Rtd) and the late Alice Okon Edet Ekanem (née Orok).
Upon the family's return to Nigeria, Charles undertook his early education at Corona School, Apapa, Lagos (1971 - 1975). He pursued secondary education at the renowned King's College, Lagos (1975 - 1979), and thereafter the School of Arts and Science, Uyo (1979 - 1981). By then a promising scholar, he pursued his first degree in Architecture at the University of Jos, Plateau State.
Inquisitive as he was conscientious, Charles branched out to study Computer Aided Design in the USA, before returning to England to complete his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Charles went on to work for several reputable firms: including Smith Kline Beecham, IBM, Capita, PwC, Sky Group and Royal Mail.
In the later years of his life, he shifted his focus to prioritising two of his greatest professional ambitions - entreneurship and driving African development. Among notable projects he worked on as Partner, Director or Consultant are ESJ Software Limited, Acumeni Limited, and Fifth Capital Associates. In just over a decade, he built a network of clients spanning Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, South Africa and Eswatini. As Chief Marketing Officer of Swazi Telecom, Charles would moreover find a second home in Eswatini, a nation he particularly adored for its natural beauty, vibrant culture and tranquility.
As in his career, Charles chose to lead a personal life that was well-rounded and energetic. Charles was an avid sportsman, playing cricket, basketball and squash throughout his youth. Loyal to his favourite team, he was a lifelong supporter of Liverpool Football Club until his death. YNWA!
Charles was well-known within his circles for his intelligence, passion, humour and insight on a host of issues. Enthusiastic to inspire others and spread positivity, he was a mentor to many, lending his ear to offer firm yet fair wisdom. Though he was not one to suffer fools gladly, those who sought his counsel will attest that his words were always proven unerringly right.
Nonetheless, Charles' greatest personal achievements were his family and faith. He met Patricia Modupe Ekanem (née Tugbobo), and they married in 1993. He is survived by their two children, Myles and Ryanna, whom he loved so very dearly. Charles is also survived by his sisters, Esther and Victoria and many other relatives.
Charles embraced Jesus Christ with an unwavering devotion, through good times and hardship. His faith truly blossomed in his final years: on several early mornings, Charles walked to St Andrew's Church, Harrow. Finding peace at the parish, he passed on the strength he received through prayer to those around him. From these visits he would receive a word of exhortation, not for himself alone but for all those he spoke to through a WhatsApp broadcast list. Each word was signed "CEE" - Charles Etekamba Ekanem.
We thank God for Charles' fulfillment of his purpose to touch so many lives, as poignant tributes pour in from all over the world: https://www.forevermissed.com/charles-etekamba-ekanem/tributes
We thank God, who has called our dear father, husband, brother, cousin, friend and mentor home to rest with Him forever and always in His everlasting and glorious Kingdom.

Funeral Tribute

on the transition to glory of

Charles Etekamba Ekanem

Delivered by Olufemi Babayomi Awotesu

At St. Andrews Church, Roxbourne, Harrow, Middlesex HA2 9ER United Kingdom
On Monday, 29 March 2021
Hello everyone.  I am Femi Awotesu and I am honoured that Dupe, Patricia, has asked me to deliver the Eulogy to her husband, and father to Myles and Ryanna.

One of my earliest, cherished memories, of Charles is of a frightfully cold but bright, wintry day in January 1997 when Charles drove my wife and I and our new born son home from hospital.  I remember, as a new father, feeling great pride but also some mild trepidation at the task on which I was embarking.  My sense of vulnerability was heightened because I was still getting myself financially settled in the UK and the economy was recovering from recession.

My abiding memory of that journey from St. Mary’s, Paddington, was of the most thoughtful, caring way in which Charles got us home – I literally felt that we were all enveloped in his expansive emotional embrace.  That experience of Charles’s warmth and consideration was part of a mosaic of sentiment surrounding the birth of my son that evoked for me, powerfully, God’s reassuring presence in that challenging time and led me to name our son Oluwadurotimi, literally, Yòrùbá for “God stands with me”.   What was remarkable was that I had met Charles barely two years previously because Dupe and my son’s Mum, Made, have been childhood friends since their days at Holy Child College, Lagos.

A recurring theme through all the tributes that have been posted online as well as during the tribute ceremony a fortnight ago was on Charles’s generosity of spirit.

Othame recalled how Charles supported his family in their grief years ago, describing him as a wise and loyal friend.  Anietie said they have been friends since their childhood, but he was more like a brother to her.

Faith described him as her mentor, who supported her through so many challenges.  She characterised Charles as selfless, a man after God's heart with a passion for family.

Charles’s passion for family radiated from his devotion to his own family.  I remember vividly how, following Ryanna’s birth, he spoke in such glowing terms about how Dupe had carried that pregnancy.  He was full of praise for her, for her womanhood and motherhood to his children.  Over the years, as we celebrated one another’s children’s birthdays and other milestones, his news about Myles’s progress, both on and off the rugby pitch while he was at St. Albans and beyond, came from a deep reservoir of fatherly pride.

When Charles rang me on 11th June last year to announce that Ryanna had got a First from King’s, his huge elation was palpable and I rejoiced with him.  He mentioned how he would sometimes go into Ryanna’s room for no apparent reason . . . just to see her, to drink in his joy of her.  Yes, Charles loved his family deeply.  We give God thanks that, in his fifty-six years, with Dupe by his side, they have raised Myles and Ryanna to be the exemplary young man and woman that they are today.

Charles loved deeply.  He cared deeply.

Eniola described him as a beautiful soul.

Joseph told of his kindness and words of encouragement.

Tony spoke about how Charles was his best man, not only at his wedding but in myriad other ways since their days together in Jos.

Charles, Toyin and Temi, Linda and Elizabeth recalled his friendship, as have friends from Corona School, Apapa, from Kings College, School of Arts and Sciences, University of Jos, friends from Uyo, Lagos, Accra, Southern Africa, from Wales, from the length and breadth  of all the places where he laid his footprint.

Eniola and Antonia and Mike recalled their long conversations, Maurice commenting also that there was never a dull moment in Charles’s company.

I had established a pattern with Charles many years ago of speaking with him only at weekends or on holidays, as our conversations were always marathon events, ranging from discussions of public policy, politics and current affairs, business and investment, technology, spiritual matters and the foibles of man – conversations across a broad spectrum, even to the finer elements of jazz fusion.  Jonathan Butler was a particularly favourite vocalist.

Uwem-Obon described Charles as versatile, creative, an astute visionary, with a cerebral, engaging mind. How true.  Charles loved a good debate and anyone entering into a verbal and intellectual jousting with him had better be on top of their brief because Charles was superlative in marshalling facts in support of his argument.  He was articulate, well-read and of broad mind.

Nnamdi recalled their days at King’s College, as did Sina, describing Charles as a gentleman, sharp, witty, a scholar.

Those debates, however, would inevitably be laced with plenty of humour.  Charles could go from a gentle chuckle to a body-shaking, face-reshaping, rumble of laughter that would set me off, even over the phone.  His jolly nature and camaraderie were, oh, so infectious, as Vincent and George also recall.

Charles could also be very serious, very contemplative, and I would assert that he had become ever more so in recent years.  His insights in our conversations had acquired an even greater depth.

Daniel spoke about what a refining influence he was in his life.

Ojeaga described him as larger than life, how they laughed and cried, prayed and played together.  Many years ago, Charles had nicknamed me Otunba and, to me, he was Obong.  I have not called him Charles or Ete or Etekamba in years; to me, he was Obong.

Having said all this, ladies and gentlemen, I don’t want to paint a picture of Charles as having been purely virtuous.  All of us, God’s creation, have our flaws.

I think Shakespeare put it best when he wrote

the web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill, together.  Our virtues would be proud  if our faults whipped them not, and our crimes would despair if they were not cherished by our virtues”.
All’s Well That Ends Well
William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616)
Charles Etekamba, Obong, you have run your race marvellously.  Whatever remained unfinished on your agenda, particularly concerning Patricia, Myles and Ryanna, we pray that God Almighty will perfect it in the way only He can.

The many tributes about Charles attest to his noble character, to a gentleman, loved and admired by all who knew him.  Myles and Ryanna, with their Mum, Patricia, will tell his story to their children yet to be born.  We, who join them in mourning his loss and celebrating his life, will add our own stories, as we remain close to his family in our allegiance to Charles’s memory.

In the words of the English poet, John Donne,

Here in this world He bids us come, there in the next He shall bid us welcome.”

Charles, Etekamba, husband, father, brother, friend, soul mate, May you rest in the eternal embrace of your father in Heaven. Amen.

Etekamba,

Though it had been many years since I saw you (in the Railway Compound), I recall the jovial conversation we had when I found out Francis is your cousin, & we reconnected. It seemed like time had not passed.

May your gentle soul rest peacefully.

Kobina
