I will always remember what a welcoming father-in-law and fun grandparent, Charley was. He would call himself “house boy number one” when he visited, pitching in on the household chores, and monkeying around with the kids. His sense of humor and generosity never faltered. He was, as he would say, an “easy keeper.” Having him in our home was truly a blessing.

Charles Eugene Flyte age 85 Queen Creek AZ. was born to Samuel and Alice (Veskrna) Flyte Febuary 20, 1934 n Hot Springs SD. He passed from this life June 23, 2019 at the Lund Family Hospice Center in Gilbert, AZ with beloved family at his bedside. God granted gifts of the spirit were evident thru out his life. Generosity, compassion, forgiveness, hospitality, humility, love and caring for his family, friends, neighbors, community and country. After graduating from Hot Springs High School class of '52, "Charley" served in the US army 10th mountain division in Germany. He married Gerda I Muller from Bad Bruckenau, Germany whom he met while serving on the medical corps and she was in nurses training at the university hospital in Wurzburg, Germany. They made their home near Hot Springs, SD on the Flyte family farm Oral, SD where they were joined by daughter Charlene and son Roger. Charley raised sheep, cattle, chickens and a few hogs. He supplemented the farm income with sheep shearing and various jobs with his brothers and friends. The Charles E Flyte family moved their sheep, cattle and hay operation to their own ranch in 1966. Charley supplemented the ranch with a trucking business and various carpentry and cement jobs. He served on the Oral volunteer fire department and delighted in raising funds for the dept. with pancake and sausage dinners and the famous Oral fireworks and street dance with his co-volunteers. He actively pursued the political stage of state government in house and senate to represent the voice of the people of his community. He supported and encouraged his children's interests, church attendance, school functions and events, 4-h horsemanship, band and athletics. After his first marriage dissolved. His 2nd marriage to Joann Huston Irick Kelly lasted 30 + years until her death in 2011. They owned & operated the Moorcourt Motel and Laundromat in Moorcroft, Wyoming. Charley extended his hospitality, compassion and generosity to friends, family, their employees, deer hunters, soccer teams, rail roaders, miners and anyone who needed a roof over their head and a job at the Moorcroft Motel. Charley sold out in 2012 to retire in Queen Creek, AZ. Charley excelled in grandparenting and would drop whatever he was doing for his grandchildren Jesse and Matthew Monfore and Weston and Riley Flyte. Charley and Joann also served as grandparents to many local children in their community. He is preceded in death by his wife Joann (Huston), parents Samuel and Alice Flyte 6 brothers Samuel, Walter, Joe, John, Robert Flyte. 1 Sister Pauline Lecher. 1 Half sister Alice. Nephew Ralph. He is survived by children Charlene Flyte-Monfore Oral SD, Roger (Robin) Flyte Queen Creek, AZ, Grandchildren Jesse (Bridgette) Monfore, Mesa AZ, Matthew Monfore, Oral, SD. Weston Flyte and Riley Flyte, Queen Creek, AZ. and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial graveside services will be held on July 13, 2019 @ 930am at Fairview Cemetery, Oral, SD. Respectfully request bringing your own lawn chairs. A luncheon will follow at the Red Rocks River Resort, Hot Springs, SD from 11am to 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion honor guard and Bethesda Lutheran Church and School, Hot Springs, SD.
