TRIBUTES - LATE CHIEF JAMES OMATSOLA OWUMI

November 12, 2011

Ever loving and caring husband, father and darling it is like dream, I find it difficult to believe, continue to remember how we sit, discus, pray and share things together how we lived as one how our minds works together.

You are a husband, father among millions daddy you were a courageous, disciplined and God fearing husband.

The only handsome, charming man I ever know. I love you, we lived as one, if I am happy you are happy, if you are happy I am also happy. If am worried you are worried, in short we share our joy and problems we do things together.

You loved peace and lived a peaceable. Lived and passed unto eternal glory peacefully.

Adieu darling Adieu daddy.  Rest in peace.  Your loving wife

MRS. FLORENCE ONOME OWUMI - WIFE

Daddy, you have always been a source of inspiration to me. The pillar of strength in the family. A source of encouragement and the fortress of the home. Daddy, you are a blessed man, who is truly gifted, hardworking and God-fearing. You are a blessing to me and your faith and trust in God is worthy of praise and admiration.

You were so great that your demise was felt through the nation. From you I learnt to be strong and to believe that with God nothing is impossible. You taught me to be honest, determined and focused in life.

Every day, I thank God for blessing me with a father like you. Your counseling sessions can never be forgotten. We continue to walk in the good ways that you have shown us.

MR. AUSTIN A. OWUMI - SON

Death Oh death, why are you so cruel? You snatched my precious father away like a thief in the night, now who do I run to when the cares of this world gets too heavy for me? Who do i turn to when the wicked people of this world try to bring me down? Daddy, you stood up for me, you were my solace.

I am still in shock at your sudden demise.  Like you knew you would pass on because you called me the day before you slept in the lord and told me not to worry about anything that everything will be okay.

I am happy though that I had the chance to tell you on father's day that you were the best Dad I could ever wish for. I draw strength from the fact that you are resting in peace in the blossom of the lord and will protect and smile down on us your children and family as we grow from glory to glory. You have left a great void in my heart, I miss you so much. Adieu Papa.

MR JOHN A. OWUMI - SON

Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things we can go through, especially when it is a parent. No words can express how I feel. My father was hard working, a Christian and a disciplinarian.

His strictness taught me valuable lessons. And no matter how tense situations got between us, I know he only meant good. Let us all remember everything that he shared with us and be happy that he has finally gone home to our creator. May his soul rest in peace.

MR. ANTHONY OWUMI - SON

My daddy my hero! It's difficult to believe that you are no more. Ufuomaefa R’ Ovie, My closest confidant, my mentor, my love and help. You specially filled the gaps between my fingers because you were always there to hold my hands. Though you are no longer around, I still fill your presence. Adieu Papa.

NICHOLAS OWUMI - SON

You will forever be in my heart. Daddy, it's not supposed to be like this, at least not yet because there are yet a lot of achievements and celebrations that you should witness. Then just when they are around the corner you were called away from our midst to a better place.

I try to take solace but ever then I wish I had that one last chance to see you. I would miss you terribly and would always remember the good you stand for. I hardly have what to say to express my grief at the reality of losing you because I never imagined a day like this would come as I always want you to be around us.

Your memories will always remain alive in my heart. Daddy, rest in peace with the lord. Love you dad.

MR. GREGORY A. OWUMI - SON

Daddy, your death has created a big vacuum in my life. Daddy, I cannot believe you are gone. You were an icon that cannot be forgotten in my hearts. You are a great man, a loving father, a discipline man, a rare gem, a great politician, a visionary and a great patriot.

You are indeed a man of his people, who loved and served them. You have laid the foundation, and we shall always take care to follow your legacy. I loved you daddy, but God loves you most. Adieu Daddy.

MRS. CATHERINE IYELE - DAUGHTER

It's indeed honor & privilege to celebrate you as a father.

Words are not enough to express our love and deep appreciation for all that you are to us. Your words unveil the reality of the divine life of victory, hard work, prosperity, good health and the supernatural to us.

We are the products of your hard work, prayers and words of prophesy to become greater than you lived. Papa, what a delight to celebrate you as a general to everyone! Adieu papa, rest in peace.

MRS. ANNA UMUKORO - DAUGHTER.

Once again it stings like a bee; a dark cloud has befallen the family. Your death will remain painful and indelible in our lives. A humble and just father, very unassuming and kind hearted, he showed love to all, who is going to replace the vacuum created in our heart, you will indeed be missed.

Adieu daddy, I forever love you.

MAGISTRATE MARTIN OWUMI - SON

Brother! What a great vacuum your demise has created. Only the Almighty God can fill it up. We your brothers, sisters, children in fact all of us you nurtured, closely knitted together from the day papa left the mantle for you at a very tender age, are shaken to the very foundation of our being.

Oh death, that must surely come. We cannot question God. You believed that God was in-charge, managing the affairs. All things worketh unto good, for those who trust in him. The way of the beatitudes you instilled in us while on earth we shall not deviate from.

For Jesus is our Hope through His merciful heart, as through an open gate we expect to obtain everything promised us in-spite of all our wretchedness. All the Novenas, prayers you offered, will lead us all on, on our life's journey to eternity. Where there shall be no more weeping but Hosanna! Hosanna!! Hosanna to the king of kings. Sleep on Mighty Man of Valor. Good night. Till we meet to part no more.

MR. GABRIEL OWUMI (UK) - BROTHER

Olorogun James Omatsola Owumi I pondered myself and found that a vacuum has been created which no one can fill the except Almighty God. Oh most loving and disciplined Dad, the memory of living the rest of my life without you is better imagined than experienced. You have brought us up to belief in God and look up to him for all our needs but at this moment I wonder if I can. Papa you belong to him and he has called you at the right time and since you have gone to rest with the Lord we shall work out our faith and met you in his kingdom.

Dad, how wonderful and loving, cheerful and caring amiable and dogged, repository of Christ. I am virtue and astute pillar of the Owumi family. Papa you are the engine room of the noble and humble family. I know you are living on although in another form which we may not be able to behold but my consolation is in the fact that we shall meet again to part no more.

Our father was until his death a respectable man. We always knew him for his smile and kindness whenever we visited. He was a man full of vibrancy and life.

MISS. PRECILIA OWUMI- DAUGHTER

My late uncle OLOROGUN JAMES OMATSOLA OWUMI was a disciplinarian.

He contributed immensely to a solid foundation on which I build today. Though growing up in his care as a child, there were times I felt he was severe rather than strict. But looking back now, those were the mere thinking from the rebellious mind of child. You never know what you don't know, not until you are face with the stark realities of life.

OLOROGUN JAMES OMATSOLA OWUMI was more to me than just an uncle He was a coach and a mentor. May his gentle soul rest in the bosom of the Lord, Amen.

MISS VERONICA OWUMI - NIECE

Daddy you led a good life worth emulating. Our wish is to see you live longer but God will for you have to be done. Though you are gone physically but your spirit and memory are still alive to inspire us the children and families you left behind. Your great and gentle soul rest in peace. Amen.

BIOGRAPHY OF OLORUGUN JAMES OMATSOLA OWUMI

November 12, 2011
Late CHIEF OLOROGUN JAMES OMATSOLA OWUMI was born on the 5th day of Oct. 1932 into the popular Chief JOHNSON OWUMI OTERI Dynasty of the great ONOTAME ROYAL FAMILY of Aka Street, ERUEMUKOHWARIEN-UGHELLI in UGHELLI NORTH LGA of DELTA STATE and the late Mrs. Akokoma Owumi Oteri (Nee ADEGBITE) of Ijuosun town in Irele LGA of Ondo State.

He attended both St. Thomas catholic primary school ERUEMUKOHWARIEN and local authority primary school, Otorwodo Ughelli between 1940 and 1946, where he obtained his standard 6 certificate.

He later improved his literary standard by engaging in rigorous private reading and church activities which prepared him adequately for his later engagement in business, social, political and traditional affairs.

On completion of his basic education, he proceeded to Lagos to seek for the proverbial greener pastures following in the footsteps of his immediate senior brother, the late Chief Josiah Dietadjevberuo Owumi, who by then had established a flourishing merchandising business there. He stayed with him a while to learn the ropes, after which he left his brother to be on his own.

As a very hard working, versatile and highly ambitious young man, it did not take him a long time to establish himself in the business life of the highly cosmopolitan city of Lagos which was then the capital and commercial nerve centre of Nigeria as a whole.

Having settled down in Lagos, he established a flourishing merchandising business as his late brother did, while also exporting processed rubber and importing clothing materials.  He was also into the importation of cars and accessories which made him one of the then leading car dealers in Nigeria. That was when he established his first registered company (Owumi Sons & Brothers) at Porter Street, Idumota, Lagos.

As an astute businessman, he also ventured into real estate business, hospitality business etc. whereby he built houses in Lagos, Ughelli, Eruemukohwarien, and other commercial centers in Nigeria.

He was also into AGRO-ALLIED Industry. He established a multi-million naira integrated farm in his home town for poultry, piggery & fish production, form where other small scale farmers, dealers etc. within the present Delta and Edo states purchase from him. He was a big time farmer.

One other company he established during his lifetime was JAMES OMATSOLA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, but which could not perform to its optimum due to his illness and eventual death.

He was a great community leader during his life time. He was Chairman of ERUEMUKOHWARIEN town during which time a lot of development strides were made in the area of infrastructure, peace and unity. He was kind, generous and philanthropic.

It is to his credit that he built the first ever two story building at Otor-Iwreko Street, Ughelli.  The said building was the first to have a giant LISTER Engine generator that provided light, in the whole of the town then.

The late elder Chief OWUMI OTERI (his father) came to Otor-Iwreko to bless the house and his son, the late Chief, with the following words “OYOVWI KEWE OMATSOLA VWOKE IRUO NANA” meaning "MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR GOOD WORKS".

His approach to life was simple. He believed in live and let live. He was a stout defender of the weak. He was a very determined person, dedicated to a cause, patient to a fault. He was appreciative of every atom of kindness. He took the education of his children and siblings very seriously. The word Discipline was his name and he abhors criminality in any form or shape.

He was a great son of ONOTAME who stood firm in the successful struggle to reclaim and re-establish the family's ownership of ONOTAME LANDS wherever they existed.

The late UFUOMAEFE believed in the adage that travelling is part of education”. Hence he visited many countries in Europe such as U.K, Germany, and the USA, during his life time for business and as well as for pleasure.

It is also on record that he was one of the builders of St. Thomas Catholic church Eruemukohwarien, an undertaking he took with his late brother, Chief Josiah Owumi. He was undoubtedly one of the defense pillars of Eruemukohwarien and of Ughelli kingdom in general.

He was honored with a chieftaincy title “UFUOMAEFE R'OVIE” of Ughelli kingdom by HRM, the Ovie of Ughelli kingdom in 1978, for his selfless and philanthropic activities in the area.

He also brought honor and respect, to his own late father, Chief JOHNSON OWUMI OTERI who himself was a great titled chief of Ughelli Kingdom during his lifetime. He was the 2nd oldest chief in Ughelli at the time of his death.

He was into politics during the 2nd Republic, when he contested but lost the House of Assembly election for Bendel State House of Assembly under the platform of the NPP in 1979. He was known to have practiced politics without bitterness during his brief entry into politics. Politics did not alienate him from his town people or friends. He was very sociable and focused.

It is the gainsaying that the late Chief James Omatsola Owumi was a detribalized Nigerian. He made friends from the Igbo, Isoko, Yoruba, Hausa, Urhobo and other ethnic group without discrimination.

He equally had so many white friends. He was a man of the people and greatly loved. However there might be a few who did not get on well with him. To them we offer over apology to forgive and forget, in accordance with God's Order.

He would wish that reconciliation should take place amongst all the feuding individual and parties, both at the family level and as well as the town itself as a tribute to his memory because he was unable to do this due to the devastating illness which eventually took his life. He begged all aggrieved persons to bury the hatchet so that together, the family will move forward.

It will be difficult to recount that as all his deeds but to God be the glory that as his glorious exit was getting close by the day, Ufuomaefe R'Ovie, as a catholic faithful rededicated himself with prayers to GOD Almighty and started taking the Holy Communion at his bedside, administered by the Rev. Fathers. He kept his Rosary handy even at the last hour.

He will be greatly missed by all including his children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters the entire community and people of good will

He is survived by a wife, many children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters, etc.

May his great & gentle soul rest in the blossom of the Lord - Amen.
