You were like a father and uncle to my husband and I. Your humility, simplicity despite your position and placing in society was humbling and disarming. Your kindness and great sense of humor such a blessing . You have a way of making difficult issues look simple. We preached love, faith and hope as born again Christians, but anyone that comes in contact with you left feeling loved, with great hope and never with despair regardless of their issue/challenge.

This loss is not only to your direct family but to many of us that have adopted you as father, uncle, mentor, and indeed our Nation and the legal profession. May your memories sir, continue to be blessed and your name remain with humanity. Proverbs 10: 7 The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot. You will be thoroughly missed by my family -Ijeoma & Ogbonnanta

Uncle Ladi, as I always called you, it was indeed a privilege knowing you. It's taken me this long to write this tribute because I have been in denial. My family & I will be eternally grateful to you. You took up our case pro bono; you were more than a lawyer, you became my surrogate uncle. You always called to check up on my sister, my nephew and I. I sometimes felt so guilty because I didn't call as often as I should have. When I took up the job offer at Covenant University then, your driver brought you all the way to Ota to see how I was faring. I can never forget your sweet tooth (you finished a large pack of sweets before you got to Ota). May your soul rest in peace, in the bosom of Christ. May God comfort and strengthen your family & loved ones as only He can.

Chief was generous, kind, happy and accommodating.
He was a brilliant man and above all a gentleman.
I met him through my friends and partners; Kingsley and Kehinde Ogbor and over the years I had sat with Chief in different events and occasions and he never wavered once.
He was constant in spirit and demeanour.
He enjoyed life and had an excellent palate for fine dining choosing depending on his mood from continental to the Mediterranean.
He also had a sweet tooth as I had come to find out and I loved him for that.
As a lawyer, his name and works speaks for itself.
His legacy will be untainted and he will be missed dearly by me let alone his close friends and family.
May his soul rest in peace and May God grant his family the fortitude to bear this great loss.
His departure though being swift and hard I believe that he is still here with us and we will continue to feel his presence in One way or another.
Rest in Gods bosom our dear Honorable silk.

As I attend your service of songs, My Chief, as I fondly called and referred to you, I have come to terms with the fact that you have left this earth. Your spirit has ascended to your maker and I am glad that I was able to share good times (mostly) during the 16 years that I knew you. You were a Father. Rest at our creators feet. We will meet again!! My Chief!

TO A VERY DEAR BROTHER: FAREWELL

Ladi and I first met in the early 50s, when we were both very young. His father relocated to Ibadan to join that legendary team in the Western Region, as Attorney General, under the leadership of my father, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Memories of happy times spent at each other's homes remain fresh. Memories of homes in which the highest moral and ethical codes would not be compromised also remain fresh. My parents were very comfortable to leave my sister and me in the care of the Williams's, whenever the need arose.

It is no wonder then that our relationship endured over several decades, through thick and thin. Until the end of his life, Ladi remained one of a handful of people to whom I felt confident to turn in critical times. I trusted his advice because I knew it always came from a heart that wished me nothing but the best.

From 'rescuing' me from a truculent 5-year-old who was determined to go to Windsor Safari Park so close to closing time (Ladi drove us in his car and made sure we got in!), to more serious issues I had to contend with in the early years of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, he was always there. He never judged my foray into partisan politics prior to that. Rather, he gave me me unstinting support and even mobilised all his brothers to do the same.

Many years later, when the 'aforementioned 5-year-old' had a son, Ladi honoured her by naming the baby 'Rotimi', and nicknamed him 'lawyer'! He always checked on us and sometimes took the trouble of making special trips to see us since we moved out of town.

He is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, my very dear brother. My daughter will never forget your several acts of kindness towards her. We will make sure 'lawyer' knows all about you. Your memory will certainly endure within my family.

Farewell, Ladi. And Godspeed.

Your dear sister,
Toks
(Ambassador Dr O. Awolowo Dosumu)

It is with a heavy heart that I write this tribute.
Late Chief Oladipupo Akanni Rotimi-Williams was a man of many parts. What I know is that, he was kind and very good to me throughout my employment as counsel in his father’s law firm ( where he also worked) and thereafter when I set up my in year 1999.
He was very selfless and would not tolerate injustice, oppression or any form of illegality come what may. Chief was always prepared to go all the way to the Supreme Court as long as his point was made. He believed in the ethics of our profession, decorum and orderly conduct. His likes are in dire need in the present day Nigeria.
He was able to instill the same discipline in his 4 children and all the lawyers he worked with. Chief Ladi was humble and he kept a private and conservative life style despite his pedigree and the wealth he amassed through hard work. Chief was a Christian and he had always loved the Lord Almighty and Jesus Christ.
I thank God our paths crossed. Sleep well, my Bros Akanns. Sleep well sir in the bosom of the Almighty God.

TRIBUTE TO CHIEF LADI ROTIMI WILLIAMS,KCOB (1960-64)SAN. BY HIS CLASSMATES THE 1960-64-66 SET.
Ladi, as he was popularly called, joined us in Form 1.He was in Panes House. He was among the youngest in our set. Though it was obvious he was born with a Silver spoon in his mouth
by the end of the first Term Ladi had adjusted to the Boarding house routines of sweeping ,dusting etc.
He was well liked by both classmates and seniors. His easy going relaxed and friendly demeanor earned him the nickname ‘shambro’.By the time we got to Form 5 Ladi was easily one of the most popular boys in our set. He was friendly and had a sense of humor which made light of even serious issues. It was easy to relax in his company.
He left K.C. in Form 5 and went abroad for further studies.Years later the Class Set was drawn to his marriage to beautiful and brilliant Henrietta the daughter of the Former Inspector General of Police. She was one year behind us at Queen’s College -our Sister School. That was quintessentially Ladi -the Son of the greatest Lawyer in the land to marry the daughter of the most senior police officer of the land!
Ladi has been very active on the class Group. He also hosted us to a very sumptuous /successful meeting of the Tripartite Group a few years ago.
His death on 3rd of October 2021 has created a vacuum which is getting wider as more and more of our classmates answer the call of our Maker and leave us sad but not broken.
He lived well.
He touched many lives beautifully.
He will be well remembered as a good man.
May God comfort his family and May his noble Soul Rest In Peace. ADIEU LADI

Ladi, my memory of you is that statement meant to tell me of my origin.
When we meet, which was not much in our later year, it was Nigeria 5 Ghana 0.

Will miss that and still hoping to revenge back but low and behold, you were taking up to where we all have been wondering what it will be like.

Live on Ladi and until we meet again to part no more.

This is so so sad! My dear Uncle Ladi,Bros and our one n only Bros Akans. I got the news just hours after u passed on,had not heard u were ill so it was a great shock. You made chambers very interesting for all of us,your jokes and your hearty laugh. You were one Uncle who was always loyal and would defend and stand by anyone you believed in.

I still have the picture of me being bridesmaid at your wedding so many years ago. It's hard to believe that a slight illness could take you down as you are so strong but man proposes,God disposes as they say. Your time on earth is now done. Your race is over. I pray your soul finds the most perfect peace as you journey on into the hereafter. Amen. Condolences to Aunty Hen,Rotola,Kunle,Yewande and Tokunboh. May the Lord comfort u all. Amen

Chief Ladi Williams, SAN aka bros akons. You were our boss for many years and later our Egbon. When we left chambers you would encourage us when we met in court and at other places. Yele remembers you leading him successfully in an Arbitration which more or less turned around the fortunes of a good friend. Thank you. Your passing was a terrible shock, a sad loss. When to befriended, you did so with utmost loyalty and would even give your head for your friend. But, when you oppose, ha! another story. Your witty jokes and dry humour was second to none, you always exhibited affection when ever we meet, even when on opposing sides of a case. You will be sorely missed. Sleep well bros akons. RIP

Chief Ladi Rotimi-Williams SAN, aka Bros, Boss! What a Titan you were! A veritable Colossus. May God bless you, Bros and may God comfort Aunty Hen, Rotola, Kunle & Yewande and your entire family, Uncle Kay, Folarin, Tokunbo & Aunty Bola. It's hard to believe you're truly gone.

I will always treasure every memory of you. You it was that invited me to the Chambers for a job interview in 1990 and thus set the stage for an exciting and exhilarating career in law! Still you, (when argumentation in Court got me in trouble with two judges at different points in my law career) who came riding in like a knight in shining armour and in one case pointed out forcefully to the Judge that his ruling was one which no judge, properly instructed in the law, ought to make, much to his chagrin. The Court of Appeal ultimately sided with your view.

Your wit, especially over lunch daily at the chamber, delivered with a dead pan expression! You would've been unbeatable at Poker.

Bros, you were formidable!!! I thank God for your life. Thank you for your abiding interest in me and my family. Your affection. So many stories to tell. I pray and hope we meet again and we can laugh as we reminisce.

Adieu!

This isn’t an easy tribute to write and I’ve put it off for as long as I could. My touch points with Uncle Ladi are a few. My mother’s cousin. My father’s classmate and friend. One of my bosses when I worked at Chief Rotimi Williams SAN ‘s Chambers’. So many memories. I remember the dinner with my parents, Rotola, Aunty Hen and Uncle Ladi in some swank restaurant in VI so many years ago. I remember Uncle Ladi deciding he was going to drive me home one evening, all the way to Festac when my car broke down. Working with Uncle Ladi was always interesting, never a dull moment and I learnt a lot from him. There’s an area of the law that I’m quite proficient in and I owe it primarily to him. He was always larger than life, cracking jokes and ready to debate. His passing has come as a big shock and we will miss him. My deepest condolences to Aunty Hen and the children. May his soul rest in peace.

My dear dear Ladi,
It has taken me this long since your death to be able to write a tribute, I was so convinced you were on the road to recovery. . .

We became very close when you were in your final year at London University and I, in my first. You helped me navigate the strangeness of both student life and discovering London. You provided much comfort and advice for which I am eternally grateful.

On my return to live on Nigeria some years ago, it was you I phoned when I needed a laugh. Your wit and erudition in these past few years have been of great solace and a source of much wisdom. I shall miss our conversations, and above all, your humour.

Rest well and in peace, Ladi.

Your cousin,

My Beloved Uncle Ladi,
I don’t know what to say. I am in shock. I have not been able to write any meaningful thing as I can’t believe that you have gone.
How can you go? As far as I was aware , you were not ill.
Ha!!! You are always there and available any time I have any time I want to talk.
As far as I can remember, you have always been there.
You got on so well with my husband and called him Papa Tricks.
You were always so sociable and jovial.
Ah, this is one passing that has really touched me.
You have gone far too soon.
May your soul Rest in Perfect Peace.

Dear Chief,
It took me so long to write this. Yes sir! I am still living in denial. Aunty Loveth(as you fondly called me) can not seem to come to terms with your sudden exit.
Thank you for the over 15 years of friendship. Thank you for the inestimable support over the years.
Thank you for loving me and my family so deeply.
Thank you for standing by us when no one did without asking questions.
Thank you for the laughter, jokes and calls.
Thank you for restoring my believe in humanity. Yes you lived for humanity .
Thank you for teaching me humility. Yes you were an epitome of humility.
Thank you for teaching me to live and love life . You lived in your own terms.
Thank you for giving me such a loving sister- Rotola Williams (Aunty Roro)
Thank you for standing up for justice even at the expense of your comforts.
Nigeria lost a rare legal luminary.
I have no doubt that you are in heaven.
Thank you sir. You will live forever in my heart.

Every virtue I have, I owe to my him. He showed me how to be strong, resilient and disciplined. I know he fought until the very end but no one can fight forever, and now, it’s his time to rest.

He lived a long, prosperous life and because of him, I hope to be a great dad to my kids someday; just like he was.

You’ll always be on my mind and forever in my heart

Rest In Perfect Peace

I am lost for words still. It was difficult to write this as these are the hardest words I have ever had to write.

He was the most loving father figure a kid could ask for. Were it possible to keep my siblings and I in his pocket to protect us from a world so cruel, he would have done so. Indeed, the greatest gift from him was love. When we, the lads, would get into fights, he would broker peace and reconcile us with the signature hug and kiss on each other’s cheeks. I struggled to see the point in the kiss; yes particularly the kiss, but now it is crystal clear his life lesson and indelible gift was love…absolute love sealed with a kiss.

Losing my him feels like I lost a pound of my own flesh. I really miss him, and I wish I could hug him one last time.

…And with a kiss, I bid you adieu Xoxoxo

You always call me T.S Eliot each time I call you. Then you will scold me for not always picking my calls promptly. We will discuss from National Issues to personal. You hated corrupt leaders. You hated corrupt judges. You hated injustices meted on individuals by security operatives. You always told me to stay out of trouble.

Three weeks before you passed, we went shopping at a supermarket behind the house with my twin and we discussed at length.

About two weeks before you passed, we had a meeting in your living room where we discussed very personal issues. You didn’t want me to leave but I had to leave for Abuja. How would I have known that it was our last meeting. How would I have known Chief?

October 3rd, 2021, I missed a call at about 6am. I hated to return that call because it was unusual. A message also came in from FRA. The worst had happened. People’s Chief passed.

My phone then rang incessantly to confirm if it was true. The lone iroko true standing in the middle of the forest had fallen.

You hated injustice. You hated corruption.

Your legacy will NEVER EVER die.

It's still an unsettled fact- the news of your passing. It is even more heartbreaking to think of all the knowledge, skills, and cheerful personality that will go with you. What comforts me the most is knowing how much of these qualities you have embedded in younger lawyers and as many people that came in contact with you.

Within the few years I spent having you as a boss, I have seen the extra care and effort you put in grooming and impacting young lawyers. Your passion and interest in safeguarding the integrity of the legal profession is second to none, and certainly one of emulation. It is very unlikely to have a boss who is not only interested in impacting professional knowledge, but also in the general welfare of his employees. Chief was one of those few and as such created a warm working environment for his employees.

According to the Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca "It is not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.” It is indeed safe to say it was a life well spent.
It is really unfortunate that we couldn't say a proper farewell to you which nonetheless is excusable, as these things are never foreseen.

Thank you Sir for being a thoughtful leader and for the privilege of being mentored under your tutelage. May your soul Rest In Peace.

A Tribute to Late Chief Ladi Rotimi Williams, SAN
A Father to All We Have Lost

Tell them at home
Tell them abroad
Tell them in the quiet places
Tell them in the market square
A father to all we have lost
The great Iroko is fallen
Where will be our consolation?

We mourn –
Tears of sorrow and deep sadness
For a father to all we have lost
To whom shall we turn to for shelter?
Who will fight our cause of action?
Who will tame the Tiger and dare the Lion to roar?

We grieve –
That a father to all we have lost
Our children shall be told
Our Children’s Children shall also hear of it
That the great Iroko was a father to all
The great Iroko was a colossus who beat a path for us in the forest
The great Iroko sheltered us from tempestuous storms when our bones were frail and weak
The great Iroko taught us to take our place in the legal firmament with pride and dignity
Chief Ladi Rotimi Williams, SAN – our great Iroko – is fallen
Where will be our consolation?

Life, they say is a fickle flame quickly fading away but I say this with all tenacity that you have made your flame burn brighter than ordinary.

In the few years I have spent with chief, he has imbibed in me more knowledge than one can acquire in centuries.

It still feels like yesterday when I first encountered chief. I was an amateur and had had no contact with law since graduating law school but bit by bit he moulded me into the man I am today with his great life lessons, erudite words and apt professionalism.

Chief left his footprints everywhere he walked and many have amassed great knowledge from following them.

The news of your exit left me in momentary consternation. The world has welcomed many great men but a man with such dexterity in legal matters, the world would not forget in a hurry.

We all respected your great wisdom, humility and warm ambience even in the midst of a storm. One of my favourite memories of you is how you sit in cultured silence to listen to whatever we had to say. You never trivialized our opinions inspite of your level of adeptness. It was your belief that there is sense in every speech and it only needs to be clearly defined. Chief gave respite and hope to many lives. His good deeds cannot be overemphasized.

You may not be with us in person but you are firmly immortalised in our hearts with memories and indelible impact that we would continue to hold high.

Live on Chief Ladi Rotimi Williams SAN.

I will never forget your kind deeds you showed to me and my sister.... Someone in your capacity could have done otherwise..... But you made sure we got home safely right in the same car you borded home.  You made us laugh tiil the end of the trip... We were both in shocked till we got home.... You were such a humble fellow till your death....   To us you are dead, but to God you are sleeping, and when He calls you will answer. I remembered the first time I joined the firm as an extern, I learned a lot from you and your warm reception and humor-filled personality made the experience fun, engaging and worthwhile.

My colleagues will agree with me that you were a force to reckon with, I had a pleasant experience with him and it's shocking to me that you're no more. I can't believe it was the last time I saw you after giving us great advice to excel in our legal career.

I'm writing this to bid farewell to a man of substance, the precious memories of you would remain in our hearts. In everything, we all can say, Jesus gives and takes, blessed be his holy name. May angels receive your soul and I pray that you rest in the bosom of the Almighty. Good night Chief.

I have always known we will not live forever but it is still rather sad. May your loving soul Rest in Perfect Peace at the bosom of your Maker until we all meet to part no more Amen

Your death has created a vacuum. But I have consolation in the Resurrection of Christ Jesus; who by dying destroyed our death, rising restored our life and we are assured that in his coming again in glory, you shall rise with him. May your family be consoled. Adieu. Requiscat in pace.

"The soul of the faithful are in the hands of the Lord, no evil shall touch them again"
Not so close to Daddy, but to my dear sister, Dr Mrs Henrrieta Williams, I ask the good Lord to console you, the children and the entire family.
May the Lord grant you all the graces you need now and always.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, let perpetual light shine upon him. May He rest in peace. Amen.

Tribute to my First Boss- Chief Ladi Rotimi-Williams, SAN -

"To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." - J.K. Rowling

Today, I lost my first boss, a father in a million!

Our paths crossed over sixteen years ago. I joined your law office as a junior counsel and you accepted me, not as an employee, but as a son and mentee. Working for you and with you was a rare privilege, Chief sir. Where do I start from? Is it the show of magnanimity? You fed us like kings and queens. Lunch was served from Monday to Friday. Standard buffet! You never missed any of our events, ranging from baby dedication to marriages. Through you sir, God made my wedding possible. You did not only ensure that I got the loan which I applied for timely, you got to the church before everyone else and you came with your beautiful wife and loving children. You willingly and gladly chaired the occasion. You had no airs and graces despite your aristocratic background. That is rare in this clime.
You made sure you visited our humble homes regardless of the location and distance. I remember our trips to Calabar and Asaba and the pep talks! You were a rare gem sir! May your amiable soul rest in perfect peace Chief!

Ladi,

I got to know you in 1961 at King’s College Lagos. I had just started form 1 and you were in form 2. But it was at Chief Rotimi Williams Chambers that I really got to know you very well.

Oh how I recall your wit and humour whenever we were together. I shall miss all that.

But I pray that your soul will rest in the Bosom of the Good Lord who will comfort your widow, Henrietta, and the children.

News of your transition came as a rude shock. Though I wasn't privileged to meet you one on one, the wave of your benevolence touched me significantly.
The light has faded and some of us couldn't say thank you.
Though we are in tears and pains, Heaven has surely gained a soul.
Rest in perfect peace Chief Ladi Williams.
