Thank you for visiting the memorial website of Christine Giles, who passed on to be with her son and husband on February 4, 2021.

It is with great sadness that the family of Christine Vivian Giles announces her passing after a brief illness, at the age of 75. Christine passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC with her daughter Tammy by her side. Christine will be lovingly remembered by her children Catherine and Tammy, her grandchildren Glennae, Hope (Jay), Aerial, Shaunison, and Rylan as well as her great-grandchildren Brody, Johnathan, and Maya. Also left to mourn is her sister Rexean, and brothers Hughie (Dorothy), Bill (Linda), and Roy Ryan (Dorothy) and many nieces and nephews. Christine will also be forever remembered by her numerous friends and relatives in Tumbler Ridge and ‘back home’ in Newfoundland. Christine is predeceased by her husband Robert ‘Bob’ and her son Perry.

Christine's family would like to sincerely thank Tumbler Ridge Medical Clinic for their support during the last year. Special thanks to Linda Muise who has been mom's support for the past years. Linda, our family owes you the world. Thank you! Thank you to the countless others that have been a source of comfort and help to Christine. We appreciate everything you have done.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private service was held on February 15, 2021. A celebration of life is tentatively planned for the summer of 2021 in Tumbler Ridge, pending an easing of restrictions. At that time Christine’s remains will be interred in the Tumbler Ridge Municipal Cemetery. More information will be provided once plans and restrictions are confirmed.

Those wishing to take part in remembering Christine or sending well wishes to the family are invited to do so on this memorial website. We encourage you to read about Christine's life and view special moments of her captured on camera. Feel free to leave a message, share a memory, or upload your own photos of Christine.

It was a big shock and sad day when I heard of the passing of my best friend, adopted sister and a loving person of over 25 years.
She was everything one would want in a friend.
I am still having a hard time believing that God had called her home, where there is no more suffering and peace is all around her.
We always went places together and we enjoyed each other’s company.
We both could share our problems with each other.
God has taken you home Christine, but you will never be forgotten, my bestest friend

THANK YOU, MOM,

Thank you for all of the support, understanding and unconditional love you have given me, for 57 years. I am so thankful that God made you my mom.  I am forever grateful for all that you are and who you have taught me to be. Thank you, mom, for everything and I hope someday that I am at least half the person you are. You were like no other, mom, for giving me life, nurturing me, and always being the first one I call for advice and just to say hello. There are not enough words to even describe how important you were in my life, Mom, and you continue to influence how I live mine. I am forever grateful. You were an amazing, strong, selfless, and loving mom. It is because of you, mom, that I am stronger.  As I’ve grown older, I realize all you gave up for me and I thank you. I just wish that God had given me time to care for you! Thank you, mom, for giving my wings so I can only soar higher because of you. The love between a mother and her child last forever. Now that I’m older, mom, thank you for never leaving me in a shopping cart and running away even though I am sure it tempting it was many times. How do I sum up my gratitude for you, Mom, in just a few words? To the best mother in the world, Christine Vivian Giles-, my angel, THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU AND I MISS YOU. If Heaven only had a phone…..

From Uncle Bruce and Aunt Judy
To Cathy, Tammy & Families,
We were so sad to hear about Christine’s passing. She was such a kind, sweet lady.

Because of the distance of course we hadn’t had much chance to spend a lot of time with her but the times that we did we had great memories of her.
Bruce has a funny memory...he remembers when he was about 10 or eleven years old and your Mom and Dad lived in Morley Clarke’s old house in Springdale. Bob wanted him to help Christine out by chopping splits (wood) to light the fire in the morning because he (Bob) was away working. He gave Bruce some money for this before he went away and he was going to give him the rest when he got back.

Bruce would forget to do it half the time. Christine would do it herself. She never reminded him and never ever told Bob. When your father came home he paid Bruce and your mother let him without saying a word. That speaks volumes of her kindness.

We both also remember our one trip up to Tumbler Ridge to see them. We were treated like royalty! We remember how she took us to her workplace and how proud she was to show us where she worked. And the love and pride she took in showing us pictures of her children and her grandchildren.

She certainly will be missed in your family and she will be missed in the Giles family as well.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you today.

Love
Uncle Bruce and Aunt Judy

From Aunt Elsie
First, I would like to say how deeply sorry we were to hear of Christine’s passing. Aunt Linda and Uncle Don join with me in offering their love and sympathy as well. We were indeed honoured as Bob’s siblings to call her our sister in law. She was funny, loving, kind and hardworking.

In the bible in Prov. 31 we read these words, "Who can find a virtuous woman? Her price is above rubies” I believe that Christine possessed many of the characteristics mentioned in this passage of scripture. She loved God and lived to please Him. And that is the most important thing any one of us could ever say about her and the one thing that means the most is that she was a Christian who dearly loved God...

I believe the #1 ingredient in the well-being of a child is Love, and Christine gave her children and her grandchildren plenty of love. She demonstrated love and kindness to all her family and created an atmosphere of warmth to all who came into her home.

When Dwight and I went up to Tumbler for Perry’s funeral, despite her sorrowing condition she made sure that we were comfortable and was well taken care of. She put our needs above her own.

In 2012 when Ken and I visited Tumbler before Bob’s passing, once again she was the perfect hostess. On the day of our departure, we wanted to leave early in the morning, so we said our goodbyes at night so in the morning we could sneak out early without disturbing them.

We awoke at 3:30 am and decided to get up and get going since we had a long drive ahead of us. We quietly came out of our room and found them in the kitchen where Christine was setting the table to fix us breakfast before we hit the road. That was the Christine we all knew and loved. A woman always wanting to serve others.

I know that all of us would have liked to have more time with her, More laughs together, share more stories, enjoy more family meals. But it was not to be for as the scripture says, 'there is a time for everything' and last Wednesday morning the time came for Christine to change her place of residence from earth to heaven and we were helpless to prevent it.

HOWEVER. The good news is that even in the midst of death. Jesus gives us hope for in JOHN 11 VERSE 25 He says, 'I am the resurrection and the life all who believe in me though he dies will live again.'

Wow, DID you hear that? What a marvellous promise. What magnificent hope we can all have for the future. The hope of life after death.
So today as you mourn your mom and grandmother, I hope you will find comfort in knowing that she is free of pain, worry and anxiety now, and is resting at peace in her heavenly home that God has prepared for her because of her faithfulness to Him…

During those difficult days as you try and adapt your life without Christine being in it, I would like to encourage you to lean on each other for support, and to lean on God for strength... May God’s presence be with you, His love enfolds you, His light surrounds you and His peace cover you. And may your precious memories of her, ease your pain and keep her alive in your hearts in the days that lie ahead.

I close with this poem:

Her journey's just begun
Don't think of her as gone away
her journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears,
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost
and she was loved so much.

From Shelia Simms & Family
Christine was more than a cousin to me, she was one of my best friends. We talked about everything, our children, grandchildren, recipes, the list goes on.

Christine showed me how to make pizza. We enjoyed many after that.
Before I started work at the post office, we used to walk there after dinners to pick up the mail and then return to one of our houses for a cup of tea. We were both disappointed when I took the job there; our walks were over. Shortly after that Christine moved to Tumbler Ridge.

Although Christine moved away many years ago, we always kept in touch. She proudly told me about her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. he was one proud grandma. Her family was her pride and joy.

My condolences to Christine's family and friends as we say so long to her. We will meet again. God bless!

Her Life

Childhood ...

February 12, 2021
Christine was born Christine Vivian Ryan on June 11, 1945 in Robert's Arm, Newfoundland to parents Bernard and Josephine Ryan. As one of nine children, Christine had a large and loving family. Christine grew up on a farm and had a wholesome childhood. She was incredibly fond of both her mother and father. With farm life, there was always lots of work to be done. Sundays were for church and relaxing.

Her father worked as a fisherman, but when he was home, he always had time for his kids. He made the very best home-made bread. Christine wished she could make bread like her dad. Christine often told stories of how her father would play with the kids, always making up silly games or ways to keep them entertained for hours. Christine loved going skating and ice fishing with her family in the winters and berry picking in the summers. Christine is closest in age with her brother Hughie, so they have always shared a special bond.

Christine spent many days helping her mother in the home. Her mother Josie loved to sew, cook, and bake. Every year, Josie would knit winter clothes made of wool she sheered herself. Christine’s mother and father taught her values like love, integrity, and honesty, which she carried with her in her life and taught her own children.

Family Life ...

February 12, 2021
At the age of 16, Christine left home to work and live in residence at the hospital in Springdale, NFLD. Until that is, she married Robert (Bob) Giles in 1963 and welcomed their first daughter, Catherine. Not long after in 1964, the young couple welcomed their son, Perry. In 1967, the young family moved from Springdale to Little Bay. Tammy, the couple's third and final child, was born in 1970. Once all three children were in school, Christine went back to work at the small town’s hotel and diner. She volunteered as a Brownie Leader and helped with the local 4-H Club.

Moving to Tumbler Ridge ...

February 15, 2021
Due to a shortage of work in Newfoundland, Bob and Christine’s family moved to Tumbler Ridge. After the move, Christine worked for the district as a cook for several years. (Readers who lived in Tumbler Ridge in the 1980’s and early 1990’s will have likely had the pleasure of being served by Christine at D&G Burger.) Later on, Christine went to work with her good friend Fern, who operated a camp. After retirement, Christine volunteered at the Salvation Army Thrift Store and the local TOPS chapter; she also lent a hand at the Tumbler Ridge Seniors Society. When her grandchildren came along, she loved to have them for sleep overs and took them camping every chance she could get.
