Hey, Chris...I think of you nearly every day, and often ask myself "what would Chris do?" when confronted with a special challenge. You remain my best friend and most admired colleague. I've been through a bad patch this year, and including you in my prayers has helped immensely. I love you, brother, and know one day I'll see you again.

Chris was our guide, advisor, and connector to the agricultural development community. Without his help the documentary "Freedom From Famine: The Norman Borlaug Story" would never have happened. We are working on a tribute video to be shown at this year's (2012) World Food Prize and need everyone's help to find footage. If you have any video or photos please let me know. Thank you.

When a great soul dies, after a period, peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of electric vibration. Our senses, restored but never to be the same, whisper to us, "He existed.
We can be, be and be better, for he existed."

A month without Chris and my life still seems a bit emptier. I re-read his last emails to me that spillover with his passion for farmers and their lives, humor, love for children, and genuine caring for the people in his life. He was such big-hearted man and leaves a legacy of empowered farmers and hunger-fighters. I'll raise a toast to Chris when next in the fields of Africa.

When Chris left us he took some of the fun of life with him. Fun is the one word that I would associate with him. It was fun to meet him, to have a discussion (and how many of those did we have!!!) with him, and to share stories. He was generous in both word and deed and I have always gone away feeling better from wherever we met over the years. Un abrazo, Chris - love you, Matt

His mission was to make a study and submit a report on the possible termination of the Sasakawa Africa Association program in that country, Sudan. At that time, Dr. I. Narvaez and myself were leading the work on wheat and sorghum mainly. His mission was made very clea

Dear Chris,
Despite the many transformations that have happened at Sasakawa Africa Association, the focus still remains on improving the quality of life of smallholder farmers, which you strived so much to achieve during your time at SAA.

SAA Matrix Management

July 17, 2016

I saw Dowswell with a conviction to take SAA to another level, higher than before, using a matrix management system.

Those who dug the well

December 14, 2011

I was very sad to hear about the death of Chris Dowswell. He was a good friend and pioneer in the communications group at CIMMYT. I recall a conversation with him in 1996 that I quote often. It was when we dedicated Glenn Anderson's Deodar Cedar by the Admin bldg. We were discussing the need to remember institutional history and the people who came before us so as to give credit as well as not repeat the past. Chris said that there was an old African saying:

THOSE WHO DRINK FROM THE WELL SHOULD REMEMBER THOSE WHO DUG THE WELL.

It rang true then and still does now. Chris was one of the pioneer comunications people at CIMMYT and laid a solid foundation for the excellent unit that exists now. That work and his later efforts with Norm Borlaug/Sesakawa are an outstanding legacy. May he rest in peace.

Chris Dowswell visits India in 2005

December 9, 2011

I vividly remeber Chris Dowswell visiting Directortae of Wheat Research, Karnal, India on March 17, 2005 along with Norman Borlaug. He developed a special rapport with me and discussed about wheat production in India. He also took my pictures with Borlaug and posted me later on.

I was sad to know about his death. I pray to Almighty for peace to his soul.
