On Chung's birthday which is also mine, I cannot help but recall more of the interactions between me and him before he passed. We had frequent political discussions which often became contentious in our texts. I was glad that he finally came to my point of view but it was not without a lot of struggles on my part. I also remember when I visited his condo in Flushing during the winter, He liked to take a brisk walk every night before he retired. It was 20 minutes around the compound in the cold and wintry night. I had bad knees so I had to walk slow like an old man. Sometimes, I ventured beyond the compound and quite enjoyed the streets and the throngs of people in the neighborhood. He always complained to me that the other people were walking too slow (and that included me) even though they were younger than he. He was so proud of his own prowess. He was losing his hearing because whenever we watched TV together, we would turn the volume way up to the point that I had to remove my hearing aids. Mei Lin told me that she had complained about it but he never admitted that he needed hearing aids. To him, to wear hearing aids was admitting growing or being old. He was so proud of himself to be at his age and still able to do a lot more than many others. I'm glad that he carried that pride to his grave.!
