This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Claire Schwarz (née Douglas), 64, born on December 3, 1949 and passed away on January 29, 2014. We will remember her forever.

Claire Ann (Douglas) Schwarz passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at age 64. Born in Flushing, New York, she grew up in Long Beach, New York, and Brigantine. She lived and raised her family in Brigantine and most recently lived in Atlantic City. Claire was a graduate of Atlantic Community College and the Harris School of Business, where she earned a medical assistant degree. Earlier in her career, she worked as a substitute teacher at the elementary and high school levels, and for several casinos as a pit clerk and slot attendant.

Claire was predeceased by her parents, Bernard Douglas and Elizabeth (Stiebel) Douglas. She is survived by her husband, Edward; her son Eric and his spouse Seth Bookey of South Plainfield; her son Frankie of Brigantine; and her friend Joseph McCourt of Atlantic City. She took great pride in her sons, who were the light of her life. She gained joy from caring for her birds, Charlie and Sam.

Claire had an amazing spirit and brought a smile and sense of optimism to all who knew her. She will be terribly missed by her family and friends.

Relatives and friends celebrated Claire’s life on Tuesday February 4, 2014, from 10 to 11 am, followed by a funeral service, at the Keates-Plum Funeral Home, 3112 Brigantine Ave, Brigantine. Claire is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing, New Jersey.

Eric and Frankie, I am so sorry for your loss. I am so sad to hear than my BFF from so many years ago is gone. I was trying to find her somewhere like FB and web searches and found nothing.

I have so many wonderful memories of Claire and I going to the beach everyday. Of course Claire's mom wouldn't let her go until after 2pm and I now am so glad she restricted us. At that time we didn't have sunscreens. Every waking hour we were together, Claire on 3rd Street me on 4th Street with our backyards facing each other. It was a magical time for me as I needed and loved our friendship.

This is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person that I will never forget.

Donations in Memory of Claire Ann Schwarz

February 9, 2014

If you should be so inclined to support an organization in memory of Claire Ann Schwarz, I thank you very much. I have three recommendations, based on my mother's own activism and deep concern for children. -- Eric Schwarz

Birthright International: My mom volunteered 30+ years ago as a hotline volunteer for Birthright International, a nonprofit, charitable organization providing non-judgmental support to women facing unplanned pregnancies. Unfortunately, there is no option to donate directly online, but you can donate by contacting the organization's headquarters (click How to Donate). Or use the location finder. In that case type the full name of the state (new jersey, pennsylvania, etc.) and pick United States for the country.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose volunteers and staff work to improve the health of infants and children by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education and advocacy. You can donate online, or if you wish to call or mail a donation, or donate to a particular chapter, see the organization's contact page.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has a mission to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Founded in 1962 by the entertainer Danny Thomas, the hospital never denies treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. The hospital's donation page has an online option, as well as a phone number to call and a link to download a mail-in donation form.

A trip to New York

February 2, 2014

The only time I went with my parents to New York City was in 1985 or 1986, taking the bus from Atlantic City. I had pestered them, and they relented, to take me to the Museum of Broadcasting (now the Paley Center for Media), so I could see some of the programs featured in the big 1984 exhibit, Lucille Ball: First Lady of Comedy. Then (and now) you had/have to go to the museum to see their exclusive curated archive of decades and decades of radio and TV broadcasts. It was a great day for me. While I was glued to the monitor watching Lucy (perhaps her Q&A that she did for the exhibit, or perhaps The Good Years, which aired once in 1962), my parents went over to Central Park for a horse-drawn carriage ride. It wasn't often that they did romantic things like that, so I hope my dad still remembers that day fondly.

Then later we went to a burger restaurant right one or two doors down from the museum on 53rd Street. Maybe Burger Heaven (?). People who know the Schwarzes know that we're a burger family (if there are no cheesesteaks around).

Unfortunately, we didn't take any pictures that day.

I Love Lucy at the Showboat

February 2, 2014

This photo was from November 2002 at the Showboat Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, when the I Love Lucy set went on tour (memorialized on the Lucy fan club site at http://www.lucyfan.com/lucyanniversarytour.html). It was also the date my parents met my partner, Seth (he and I had met in July).

Those who know me, know that I'm a lifelong Lucy fan. I can't say my parents and brother shared the same passion for Lucy, but my mom was supportive and enjoyed watching Lucy with me (especially Lucy's maudlin movie The Big Street). Mom also came with me to see Lucie Arnaz once or twice when Lucie was performing regularly in Atlantic City.
