As the bard Shakespeare would say “he spent his whole life in full measure”.

In his earliest years, Antiguans would refer to Clarvis as that “manish force ripe boy foo Hercules and Iris”. He was intelligent and smart throughout his school years to University where he met and married a humble, stately and intelligent Guyanese Doctor, Marlene.

They had 2 children, Kevin and Damon.  He was always faithful to God, his wife, his children, his family and his friends. Clarvis had a passion for people, the arts, culture, cricket, carnival, his sisters and politics.

And so may his soul rest in peace. As the ancient Romans in their native Latin would say “Requiescant in pace”

Rest in Peace Clarvis

All relevant condolences, blessings, hugs & love. Just adding my little blurb to the tribute list as below:-

What can I say about my uncle that has not already been said by so many? I will go with the theme of Frank Sinatra's I did it my way. If it is anybody who fits that song it is my uncle. He certainly had a way of doing things in his own way. Always had a way of getting things done many a time in very unorthodox ways but in the end proved to be the right way. I will give a little story just to show this.

This story comes from the days when one could travel in the Caribbean for under $500. My brother and I used to make annual vacation treks to Antigua from Barbados to spend Summer with our cousins in the Joseph household. This was when most of Coolidge was more or less mostly bush and the present Joseph house wasn't even thought of yet. Great space and surrounding space for cousins to get into all kinds of trouble and fun. However there was this thing coming up to the end of the vacation called a worming all of us had to go through that involved that nasty tasting thing called milk of magnesia.....YUCH......

Kevin being the trooper as usual took it without any problems. The last three of us well that's not exactly how it went. Auntie Pat used to make a lunch trip home from work daily. Of course we made sure we were somewhere else at that time. This went on for the whole Summer. However that uncle of mine picked up in the early what was going on. So he came for us at the wee hours of the morning when we are in the dead of sleep. Hold the nose, put that terrible tasting stuff via spoon in the mouth and down it went of which we had no clue until we woke up. You wake up snapping your mouth, what taste is that in my mouth?

When you go breakfast there is my uncle with a big smile on his face and says with great gusto "How the boys feeling this morning?" Yep gets things done is his own way and style usually effectively and a sense of humour.

They definitely don't make them like him anymore and he leaves a huge void which I not sure can ever be filled. It is with great thanks to the powers that be to have been in the presence of this great man for a time.

All relevant blessings to all family & friends in getting through this huge loss.

Clarvis the Caribbean Collosus

I never really got to know a collosus until I met and worked with Clarvis Joseph. Thanks to our mutual friend Pauline Stone-Myrie and the unseen hand of a former Prime Minister of Jamaica, I became an associate and consultant with Lorijos Management Consultants - the brainchild and Caribbean-wide management consulting vehicle led by Clarvis.

Clarvis was a fine manager, project manager, management consultant, colleague and friend. He taught me to never write an end of project report without including in it, a recommendation for the next project!

Working with Clarvis was like attending university all over again. Only this time the tutorials were held in real life work settings in the office or on the verandah at Carib Seas Antigua, at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium, Harmonites pan yard, over Sunday morning chop-up, at Commissioner's Grill, Spliff's, the Palms, Russell's at Fort James or some other watering hole. The lessons from the simple fundamental truths which Clarvis spoke earnestly, effortlessly and unadorned, were endless and are immortal.

He was larger than life and cut quite a dash in his home country and across the Caribbean region. On my first visit to Antigua, travelling for a public sector assignment, when I stated my business, I got quizzical looks from the immigration officer who proceeded to ask more questions. Summoning my better judgement, I added that I was also visiting Clarvis Joseph. "Oh. Mr. Joseph! Why didn't you say so?" The officer replied, quickly waiving me through. From then, no matter my business in Antigua, I was there to visit Clarvis Joseph! And I did whenever he was on the island.

Clarvis is the friend who insists on handing you the keys to the Pink House and his car so that you don't have to book a hotel room or rent a car when you are visiting his home country. One would be made a better, more whole person for having met and known Clarvis.

For these and so many more memories, this Caribbean Collosus that is Clarvis Joseph, will be greatly missed.

I extend sincere condolences to his dear wife Pat, his sons Kevin and Damon, his beloved grandchildren, his daughters-in-law, siblings and other relatives and hosts of friends.

Walk good my friend and may your soul find eternal rest.

Our deepest condolences to Pat, Kevin and Damon and their families on the passing of our dear friend Clarvis.

You were always a man of uncompromising standards, deeply passionate about the important things in your life ... family, friends, country, work ... as well as cricket and steel pan.

Not only were you an exemplary Caribbean businessman who made indelible contributions to the Antigua and Barbuda business community and the regional shipping industry, but also an outstanding West Indies cricket leader and stalwart.

We will forever remember you as an urbane and jovial host, whether in your box at cricket, the carnival season limes at the office, or in your Coolidge home.

It has been a privilege and honor to have been allowed to share a small part of your life.

Rest In peace dear friend.

I met Clarvis over 50 years ago at the UWI Mona campus and I’ve had a wonderful association with him since then. Together with his wife Pat, I have enjoyed a very pleasant relationship over these many years. I became one of the godmothers of his son Kevin with whom I’ve established and maintained a separate relationship. I’ve also become the “grand godmother” to his grandson Darius who has been a Law student at UWI Mona campus since 2016.

I have always enjoyed Clarvis’ characteristic good humour and generosity of spirit!! Being around him has always been a fun-filled and at times, a downright riotous experience!! Although always astute, balanced, creative and innovative in his professional and business life, he knew very well how to “let it go” in his personal and social life. Thus when hanging out with Clarvis, any number could play and any lime could become an occasion of “fun caan done”!!

He has always been a “friend’s friend” and I give thanks for a life well lived in service in various ways to the people of the Caribbean region!! Walk good my friend!!

Sincere condolences first of all to Pat, Kevin, Damon and their immediate and extended families on the passing of our dear friend and brother Clarvis.

For persons mourning loved ones, the realization, the ‘AHA’ moment, that there is no returning in the flesh, strikes at different times. It could be a fleeting memory, the sound of a voice or a small incident.

My trigger happened when I stepped into the flower shop. The jolt segued into a pleasant memory when the attendant said “Any preference in colour?” I blurted out “Yellow”.

My husband, Clarvis and their group of “Brother B” and house limers drew no quarter and took no prisoners when they heckled and hectored each other. So when Clarvis repainted his house in the most yellow of shades, his friend “Fats’ lost no time in regaling the brethren with stories of the beacon in Coolidge which served as a light to lighten the darkness for those who may have lost their way.

We have been made aware of the numerous times during his sojourn on earth that he truly served as a beacon and lent a hand to many a struggling one who needed guidance and direction.

To the members of our house hold he was simply godfather to one and one of the uncles to all three who knew that he kept them within his radar and made sure that the junior males in his family followed by example in this regard.

We have agreed that his place at the kitchen table will still be on reserve with ‘real plate and cutlery’, including the spoon to eat the souse after he would have dispensed with the other food.

I am not sure a yellow canary will find his grave. I do know that a hummingbird would whiz by with a message to him that his spirit would always be welcome in our house and that we too would miss him dearly.

Rest in peace, dear family/friend.

Dear Uncle Clarvis,

As you enter another phase of your life, I would like to say thank you. Thank you for being a wonderful person. I did not know you until I was grown, but once I met you, I was impressed by your warmth, humor and kindness. You opened your heart to my sister, brothers and I in such a refreshing way.

Despite family strife and misunderstandings, you welcomed us with open arms when we made our yearly pilgrimage for Carnival. God showed how important you are to our lives since during my sister Ismay's last days of her life, she traveled to Antigua, visited family, gave you a big farewell hug and said I love you. Uncle Clarvis, know that you are loved by all of us. Say hi to everyone in heaven. I know you will be part of the welcoming committee with Jesus.

God bless and thank you.

Your niece,
Vilma

For our very first meeting at Jacqui and Kevin’s wedding I was totally in love with your larger than life personality and I have treasured each moment that I spent with you either here in Barbados or Antigua.
To Aunty Pat, Kevin, Damon, Jacqui, Bridget and the grandkids, we send our condolences, love, hugs and blessings. I am sure that Uncle Clavis, Dad and Aunty Ann are getting together for drinks.  May he Rest In Peace and Rise in Glory.

TRIBUTE TO CLARVIS JOSEPH
MY DEAR FRIEND AND MENTOR
From Pauline Stone Myrie and Curtis Myrie.

I begin by quoting from the great playwright William Shakespeare “His life was gentle and the element so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world, this was a man”.

My friend James Hesketh Clarvis Josephs was such a man. My friend for over 50 years had all the elements that made up an exceptional human being, a family man, a friend, a businessman, a lover of cricket, and most of all a man of impeccable integrity.

Over the 50 years of our friendship Clarvis stood up for me, advised me, gave assistance to me when he was asked to and celebrate my life choices as much as I celebrated his.

I have noticed the many accolades, that he has received since his passing and I’m sure that many people in the Caribbean was just learning what an awesome man he was. Of course, he never went around boasting of his greatness some people has are won’t to do. Clarvis was a Caribbean man with an outsize influence in the region, he knew and was a friend of most Caribbean Prime Ministers past and present.

For myself I shall miss my very dear friend, who was the epitome of what a friend should be. My husband Curtis who became his friend as well paid him a tribute last Thursday on his internet programme Real Chat, actually it was in December 2020 that Clarvis himself gave him an interview talking about his favourite subject cricket. I believe it was one of his last interviews before he passed and as usual my friend gave his very frank views on the sports.

Our mutual friends in Jamaica have all expressed their own grief at his passing as they all revered him. Rhona McLean, Carole Reid Marjorie Whiley, Peter Walters and Ann Martin extend their condolences to the family and friends of Clarvis, especially to Pat his wife, his two sons’ grandchildren and sisters.

Clarvis’ family will remain my family for as long as I live, and I am sure they know, that I am united with them in their grief.

My he rest in peace as I give thanks for his life which was well lived with no regrets.

Mr. Clarvis Joseph was Chairman of the APUA Board in 2004 and he interviewed and hired me in the post of HR Manager. Though a family friend, and someone I’d known all my life, the interview was the toughest one I’d ever had. Hard hitting, thought provoking questions. I was richer for the experience. In a board meeting one day, I heard him make a statement which affected me profoundly, and has shaped the way I live my life since then. He quietly said “Start as you mean to go on...”.

His principled business positions, wry humor, matter-of-fact speech, half-smile, the piercing assessing looks, and of course the gravelly voice are how I will best remember him. Whenever we are out of this pandemic, and I visit Goldeneye Calypso Tent again, I shall look back towards the bar, but he won’t be there.

Rest in Eternal Peace, Mr. Joseph.

The Beloved Family of Clarvis

We the Clarke, Webb-Harris and Marlin families mourn the passing of our brother, godfather and friend. Although Clarvis was not of our shared blood he was loved deeply in our hearts. He was considered as close as a brother to Reg, uncle to my children Gordon and Kathy-Ann and to me Ann a life long friend.

The Joseph family and ours were so close that at the Wedding of Clarvis and Pat, Phyllis Green and I were the witnesses and friends to this union. The friendship continued as Phyllis and I became Godparents to Kevin. On the birth of Kathy-Ann ,our daughter Clarvis was the godfather. This role he relished with gusto.

He was the Emcee at Kathy's wedding in Jamaica and warned Chris of dire consequences if he did not treat Kathy right. These words must have contributed to the happy union of Chris and Kathy 19 years later.

Clarvis was a force of nature, a loyal friend of unswerving views on most subjects. He could argue on any subject be it World Politics, Cricket, Economics, and Ocean transportation (Shipping) . Whenever Clarvis
called to say he was coming for a visit we knew there would be exciting times. He would regale us with stories of his exploits. We simply relished his company.

He will be sorely missed but we know that wherever his soul is, that place will be richer for his presence and assuredly we will meet our beloved Clarvis again. He lived life on his terms and as the Sinatra song says "He did it his Way".

To his wife Pat, Kevin, Damon and their wonderful wives and beloved grandchildren and friends, Clarvis is gone but not forgotten.

Farewell our dear friend.
Reg and Ann.

My Love Letter Tribute to Uncle Clarvis from Michele

Dear Uncle Clarvis,

I write this tribute to you as your oldest and first niece, daughter of your oldest sister, Isalyn. Whom when she died, you said to me at her funeral, "I am now your mother and your father." That statement is a testament to how you viewed family and how we should always strive to take care of one another. As a young child in Antigua being reared, as third world people do, by my grandmother, grandfather, aunts and uncles, you also were a part of that nurture team. You often relayed to me how you were the one to teach me how to play warri. And though I, along with my other cousins, just knew you as Uncle Clarvis, I am now realizing how lucky I, we, were to have such an impactful individual as part of our lineage. I always felt a sense of belongingness and pride in your presence! Our personal conversations, though not often due to distance, were always meaningful and heartfelt. Visiting Antigua in the future without seeing you will DEFINITELY be an adjustment; but I am comforted in the fact that you, and Aunt Pat, have gifted us and left behind your sons, Kevin and Damon, who have been well equipped and enabled to allow us to enjoy the rest of this journey as Family!

Will Miss you and Love You Always, Michele

Tribute for Mr. Joseph from Careisha Whyte

I met Mr. Joseph as a young pan player in Harmonites. What started out as a casual conversation turned into a discussion about my goals and dreams. Now, thirteen years later, I am living those goals and dreams, and it would not have been possible without his investments and advice. He was a huge advocate of education and took every opportunity to remind me that I had to go to university. I can still hear him telling me in his slow, purposeful way how he can travel to almost any Caribbean island and call up a friend when he got there because of the network he built at college. He even tried to persuade me to study in the Caribbean…a suggestion I respectfully declined. I did, however, act on his advice to keep playing pan while studying.

I never thought my love for pan would open the door for me to meet such an icon who played a fundamental role in making my dreams a reality. I will miss his mini history lessons while we ate lunch at The Larder. I will miss telling him about my achievements, seeing his approving smile, and then discussing what’s next on the list. He was never short of suggestions and often presented a perspective I had not considered. Mr. Joseph helped me think big and make bold moves I would not have considered without his prodding. I am grateful to him for being a culture champion and youth supporter who embodied the importance of giving back. One day, I hope to return the favor and plant a seed in a young person’s life. I refuse to let the chain end with me.

Sleep well, Mr. Joseph. I will continue to make you proud.

That Man is A Success

March 8, 2021
My sincere condolences to the Joseph family, near and far.

Permit me to say a few words about Clarvis - my colleague, friend and mentor.

Clarvis was undoubtedly one of the kindest and most generous persons I have ever met. Whether for business or for cricket his hospitality was unmatchable. He was a fearless and honest business man who always told it like it was and encourage others to stand up for what they believed and wanted. Every conversation was a moment of learning, be it the business of shipping/Caribseas, cricket or his stories about Africa - he had the ability to hold one’s attention while sharing life lessons. He was also a nationalist who held Antigua in the highest esteem.

In 2004 when I was thinking about starting my own business, he encouraged me to do so and assured me that I can count on him for advice and guidance. I thank him for the support which has stood me in good stead up to today.

A business man, sports administrator, nationalist, Caribbean man, friend and mentor. Truly "a man for all seasons'. For all the memories and milestones he had left, the below Robert Louis Stevenson's poem " that man is a success" best describes him for me.

That Man is a Success by Robert Louis Stevenson
That man is a success
who has lived well,
laughed often and loved much;
who has gained the respect of intelligent men and women
and the love of children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who leaves the world better than he found it,
who has never lacked appreciation of Earth’s beauty
or failed to express it;
who looked for the best in others,
and gave the best he had.
To those whose lives he has touched I know he would want us to celebrate his life, by emulating some aspects of his to achieve our own successes. As such I leave you with the thoughts of the attached second poem.

Until we meet again, rest in power my friend.

Best regards,

Norman Rice
