Recital for Mom's Cremation (03-16-2021)

March 16, 2021
Her Journey Has Just Begun

Don't think of her as gone away -
Her journey has just begun
Life holds many facets
The Earth is only one
Just think of her as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think how she must be wishing
That we could know today
How nothing but our sadness
can really pass away
And think of her as living
In the hearts of
those she touched
For nothing loved
is ever lost -
And she was
loved so much!

Obituary

March 12, 2021
Claudine Mae Spencer, 88, died Tuesday (March 9, 2021) at the Judith Brogan Memory Care Unit at Cedar Hill Continuing Care in Windsor, VT.  A cancer and COVID 19 survivor, she was Vermont Strong through and through. She passed away naturally, surrounded in her last days by her loving children and taken care of with great compassion by her Cedar Hill family.

Born September 6, 1932, in Bolton, VT, to Scott Slayton and Ruth (Hayden) Slayton, she moved to Windsor VT in 1948 to live with her older sister, Florilla (Frella) Pascarelli where she attended Windsor High School and met her future husband Winston Francis Spencer.  On August 11, 1951, they married and, not long afterwards, moved to Plainfield, NH to raise their family.  Claudine worked for a few years at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Windsor but soon became a fulltime homemaker and child caretaker.  For over 60 years she lived on Hayward Road in Plainfield, actively participating with her husband and children in the Boy Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Windsor Little League, Community Church and the Blow-Me-Down-Beavers 4H Club.  She was very proud to be at the heart of a large extended family who enjoyed many, many times together filled with love, laughter and music (including her harmonization!).

Over several decades she helped to raise dozens of children in the area, babysitting many during the day and often taking them into her home for periods of time if circumstances required.  Nothing made her happier in life than being with her family and providing love and care to others’ children, treating them all as her own. In 1992 she became a devoted, full-time caretaker for her husband, Win, as he battled with cancer until he passed away in 1999, not long after they celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband Winston Spencer Sr., brothers Albert, Scott Jr., Hayden and Sydney Slayton and sisters Florilla Pascarelli and Claudette Collins.

Survivors include her son Winston Francis Spencer, Jr. of Plainfield and three daughters: Patricia Jo Spencer (Todd Milo) of Plainfield, Janet Spencer (Russell Tanguay) of Hartland, VT and Sarah Spencer of Lebanon, NH. They also include her much beloved grandchildren Amanda Mae (Spencer) Williams of Eliot, Maine; Winston Francis Spencer III of Somerset, NH; Bryan Daniel Tibbals of Lebanon, NH, and; Christopher Ryan Spencer of Vergennes, VT. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Edythe Slayton, brother-in-law, David Spencer, and many nieces and nephews who greatly enriched her life.

A website has been created in memory of Claudine at www.forevermissed.com/Claudine-Mae-Spencer.  At some point this summer there will be a celebration of her life at the family home in Plainfield and her burial will take place in the Plainfield Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers and donations, please reach out and embrace your family members as this is what gave Claudine her greatest pleasure in life.
