COMFORT OLUREMI NYWANYIUGBO OWUMI (1940-2001)

IN LOVING AND FOREVER MEMORY...

November 28, 2011

Like her name depicts, Comfort Owumi was a vibrant and energetic woman who brought a lot of comfort to the many lives she was fortunate enough to encounter while on this earth. Comfort was bestowed an honorary chieftaincy title “Lolo Ehime” in her maternal hometown of Nbano Local Government Area of Old Imo State.

Mrs. Owumi, as many who knew her fondly called her, was only 6 days shy of her 61st birthday when she sadly departed from the shores of this world on Sunday night, December 09, 2001 at her place of residence in Amityville, NY.  Her doctor of 8 years ruled her death as natural cause due to heart failure.

Born December 15, 1940 in Umueledi Village of Old Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria, Comfort Owumi’s parents were Jacobs Iheukwumere Onusereuka (deceased) and Matilda Ada Jacobs Onusereuka (deceased). Comfort’s maternal lineage is of Royal Blood of the Okeagu Compound (Compound of Great Warriors).

Though she never attained any formal education past the 5th Grade level, she was indeed a woman full of wisdom, drama, intelligence and amazing wonder in spite of the many trials and tribulations she experienced while on this earth.

She was trained as an Auxiliary Nurse under the private practice of Late Dr. Mba from 1960 to 1963 and later became a Full Nurse from 1964 to 1966 before the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War.

Upon moving to the United States in 1987 to be closer to her children, Comfort begun a new career as a Certified Nursing Aide. She enjoyed shopping, watching soap operas, cooking, traveling, and talking on the phone with friends & family and craftwork.

Comfort’s greatest joys were her grandchildren and the church. She was full of excitement whenever it’ was time to go worship and / or sing praises to God. Her devotion and gratitude to God grew even as her earthly and fragile body continues to suffer.

Comfort had being a devoted member of First Baptist Church since 1992 and was appointed to the Mother’s Board in 1995 by Bishop Winfred Pippen.

In 1996, Comfort was put on dialysis due to her kidney failure. This new chapter in her life prevented her from continuing her traveling to visit her many grandchildren and family members all over the United States, England and Nigeria.

Though disappointed and wheelchair bounded, she nevertheless was grateful and happy every time her grandchildren and church members come to visit her at her home.

She instilled a love of God and heart of devotion in her children. One of her favorite songs remembered by her children in her native African language reads “Help praise my God, Please everyone help praise my God, Because my God has done well for me”.

Comfort leaves to cherish her loving and fond memories: two daughters, Mercy (Lake Worth, FL), Ruth (Brentwood, NY); three sons, Nicholas (Orange, CA), Damian (London, England), Jude (Atlanta, GA); eleven grandchildren (Richard, Kenneth, Justina, Franklin, Victoria, Joanne, Joshua, Jocelyn, Jude Jr., Daniel and Baby Michael); one brother, Nnanta Jacobs Onusereuka (Nigeria); one son-in-law (Steven Anyah); two daughter-in-laws (Ronke Okonkwo and Althea Owumi) and a large host of step-children, step-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, half-brothers, half-sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, distance relatives, dear friends, etc.
