Curt Mountain's Life

March 21, 2015

Curtis Allen Mountain was born in San Diego, CA on Jan. 7, 1959 to William David Mountain Sr. and Beverly Lorraine (Carter) Mountain. He went to sleep in Jesus on March 14, 2015 after fighting bravely against grade 4 rejection of his double lung transplant.

Curt the oldest of three boys, along with brothers David and Sean grew up in San Diego among his many relatives, spending much of his time with his beloved grandma and pawpaw Carter. They would take him fishing and to baseball games. Two things he always loved. In later childhood, his parents moved their young family to Orange County where they ended up buying a house in the city of Orange just 3 blocks from our very own Orange SDA Church.

When Curt was just 12 yrs old a man from our church named Collin Rushfelt was doing some cold call witnessing in the neighborhood. He knocked on the door and presented the love of Jesus to Curt's family. They begin studying and attending the Orange Church at that time. Soon each member of the family was baptized. That was back in 1971 and Curt Mountain called the Orange Church his home ever since.
He attended Cambridge Elementary just down the street and then Yorba Middle School for a short time where he joined the Track Team and became an excellent sprinter, wining several medals. But in eighth grade his parents enrolled him in Fullerton SDA Church School, then on to Orangewood Academy for 9th-11th. During his 9th grade year he met his future wife Karol and they fell in love.

In the summer before his 12th grade year, Curt's parents moved to Merrill, Wisconsin to get away from the city and into a quieter life. Curt experienced living away from home for the first time as he went to Wisconsin Boarding Academy for 12th grade. During this time he became very involved in preaching, teaching and lay-pastoring while he worked with a pastor who was responsible for several churches in the area.

The summer after graduating high school, Curt came back to Orange County where Karol was waiting for him. In time, he got his General Contractor's License, started his own business and began his long career in the construction trade. Once again he attended Orange church where he begin to immerse himself in the Lord's work.

In August 1981, eight years after they first met, Curt and Karol married at this church.  They continued to live in the city of Orange where in 1986 they welcomed their son Joshua to the family. Then when Misty their daughter came along in 1988, their family was complete. As his kids grew one of Curt's favorite things to do was coach girls basketball. He teamed up with Phil Valentine and they coached their daughters together from 2nd through 12th grade. Curt was a wonderful father to his two children and was extremely proud of them.

Over the years with Karol at his side, Curt became more and more entwined with church work. He truly had a love for God and God's work. Witnessing was his passion. It had been since those early years as a boy of 12 when he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior. While in his late twenties, he became an Elder in the church and later served as Head Elder for over 15 years. Curt worked with Karol in children's ministries and VBS for 20 plus years. The kids loved him. He was one of those rare people who could reach out to any age, 0 to 100. He served as Youth leader for over 20 years. The Youth loved him. He worked with young adults for many years. They loved him too. Curt also served as Deacon, Personal Ministries Leader, Primary and Adult Sabbath School Leaders, Lay-Pastor, Pathfinder Director and he sat on a multitude of committees over the years. He donated many hours as a fix-it man and shared his expertise as a contractor. That was just who he was. He was always there to help. He was devoted to the church and it's members.  And we all loved him for it.

In December of 2006, Curt came down with what he thought was the flu. But it didn't let go of him and unfortunately in January of 2007 he was hospitalized with lung disease. In March of that year he was diagnosed with Bronchiolitis Obliterans with Organizing Pneumonia or "BOOP" which is a very rare disease that obstructs the lungs, making it hard to breathe. Curt had a severe case. But despite this, he kept working and doing what he could for the Lord. After 7 years of ongoing debilitation with his lungs, he finally had the chance to have a double lung transplant at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He was excited about this and welcomed a 2nd chance at a healthy life. The transplant was done on Sept. 21, 2013. It was successful! Curt had his 2nd chance. He lived life to the fullest while he was healthy, while he had time. He and Karol both praised God for that time.
