CYRIL BROUDE passed away peacefully at his home in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, on Monday, July 18, 2016, after a yearlong struggle with cancer. July 31, 2016 would have been his 83rd birthday.

Cyril was born in Liverpool, England, to Louis Broude and Anne Broude (née Clement) in 1933. During World War II he lived with his family in Montreal, later on graduating from Holt High School in Liverpool and ultimately obtaining a PhD in Physics from the University of Liverpool. After a post-doctoral position at the University of Iowa and a research visit at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1960-1961), where he met his future wife of 55 years, Esther Broude (née Sharlin), he worked as a scientist at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. in Chalk River, Ontario, until 1969. Subsequently he immigrated to Israel with his family, where he served as a Professor in the Nuclear Physics Department of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, until his retirement in 1999. During that time, he held many visiting researcher positions, such as at Queen’s University (Kingston), the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (Heidelberg), TRIUMF (Vancouver) and LMU (Munich). From 2001 he lived in London and Newmarket, Ontario, devoting his time to his many hobbies in technology and the arts, and to his family, who will sorely miss him.

Cyril is survived by his wife, Esther, and his children, Sharon Broude Geva and her husband, Eitan Geva (Ann Arbor, Michigan); Gil Broude and his wife Deirdre Broude (Uxbridge, Ontario); Tomer Broude and his wife Hilla Broude (Re’ut, Israel); seven grandchildren; and his elder brother, Frank Brodie (Montreal). He was predeceased by his elder sister, Ruth Nathan (Liverpool), who passed away one month before him.
