Tribute to my wonderful godfather

Daddy Awa was not just my godfather but a second father to me.
He carried me at my baptism as a baby and made sure he drove down to C.P.C Bali for my confirmation, a key moment that strengthened my christian faith. He has always been there for me and constantly urged me to trust God for everything. There was never a time I left without us praying together.

He was very jovial, always cheerful and had an infectious smile that warmed your heart and made you feel welcome.
I always looked forward to visiting him at Ntarinkon each time I closed from boarding school or was in bamenda because every moment spent with him was priceless.

I spoke to him a month ago informing him I had successfully completed my medical program and looking forward to see him upon my return. Unfortunately God had other plans and called him to eternal glory.

Although his passing has left a hole in our hearts, we can fill it with memories of his life, with memories of the happiness that he brought, with memories of how he touched us and how we are who we are today all because he was a part of our lives.
Adieu Daddy, I will miss you.
Your son

A TRIBUTE TO EMT AWA, THE GENTLEMAN
The news of the passing away into eternity of Mr. Elias MT Awa,  foremost Soil Scientist, agriculturalist, food security and development advocate and erstwhile Deputy Director General of MIDEVIV in the seventies and eighties, came to me and the Chumbow family as a painful reality.
EMT, as I fondly called him, made a turning-point impact on my life and that of many of his juniors in the Cameroon Protestant College (CPC) Bali where the mentorship relation between a new (freshman) student called a “small” and a senior student called a “big” had been perfected to a formidable training tradition of that celebrated boarding school.
And so, it came to pass that in January 1959,on admission to CPC, I was adopted providentially as a “small” to EMT Awa, a form five student as “Big” and mentor. Most ‘big-small’ mentorship relationships last the duration of the stay together in College and exceptionally, a few years beyond the College. However, ours has been an endearing and enduring (everlasting) wedlock of friendship and fraternal brotherhood that has lasted sixty three years; from January 1959 till his parting on the 12th of June 2021.
This was possible only because of the exceptional character of EMT, the ever smiling, witty, soft-spoken, gentleman, whose fountain of love, patience and tolerance conquered our rebellious tendencies and reactions to the domineering excesses, whims and caprices of some senior students. While some seniors believed the best way to discipline a junior was punishment and more punishment for every offense and even for human errors, EMT was different. He believed that discipline is best achieved when disciplinary measures are accompanied by a heavy dose of love, patience, tolerance and dialogue; dialogue in the form of discussions and explanations that seek to bring the junior to a better understanding of issues and consequences of actions. For EMT, punishment was a post dialogue, last resort action which he rarely used because he was so nice that no one of us will think of willful wrong doing. Rather, we sought to do everything to reciprocate his love. . He came across as a ‘big’ (brother) genuinely concerned about the welfare of the ‘small’ (brother) and always available to discuss, advise, encourage and motivate. He perfected the art of correcting us by his witty sense of humour in stories that will enable us see and distinguish the good from the bad, sifter the corn from the chaff. He thus established a bond of faith and fellowship that made me wish to be like him and be with him. So, Mr. EMT Awa made us willing and yearning to become his disciples by his unique standard of living that led us to change of attitude, change of behavior and change of mindset; in fact leading us to a life of transformation. (I believe later, EMT’s children and relations have benefited immensely from the successful experiment he practiced on his CPC ‘small’ brothers, the experiment of ensuring discipline through love, dialogue, patience, tolerance and more love. This is the principle that disarms all inclinations to stubbornness and endears one to a life of purposeful living. brought up with these principles, all the children, without exception, have become successful professionals).
Thus, when EMT left College and went to his chosen Department of Agriculture in Buea and was sent for training as Agriculture Extension Assistant in Bambili, he invited me to spend quality time with him during vacation. This put our relation on a different human pedestal: from ‘college big’(a relation of circumstances), he became my own personal ‘big brother’ and that relation became permanent throughout his stay in the United states of America and back. Thus, when Mrs. Magdalene Awa and the children came on board, I was known as a bona fide uncle to the children and EMT, as my elder brother, came to be recognized as ‘uncle’ by my children. The Benjamin, Dr. Fon Chumbow, EMT’s Godson was particularly fond of him. Everywhere he went ,he demonstrate qualities of a complete 'gentleman' and was instantly acknowledged as one by those who met him.  (We spare you the details of a book-volume that can be written about this relationship over the years).
For several weeks preceding his call to eternity, EMT and his dynamic and industrious wife, Dr. Magdalene Shiri Awa née Halle were in Yaounde with daughter, Justice Claudette Awa Bibila and husband, Mr. Henry Babila and we enjoyed extended Fellowship in their home in Nkozoa and at ours in Nkolbisson. We agreed with them and Maître Lucy Chumbow that on their return from a short family meeting in Bamenda, we were going to organize an elaborate evening of Fellowship in songs in our NKolbisson home.
Then came the call that after a brief illness, EMT Awa had gone to be with the Lord God whom he loved and served with devotion and abnegation. We were dumbfounded! So it is true that man proposes and God disposes!
We wish to thank the Awa children and especially his spouse Dr. Magdalene Awa for showering him with the love that he gave all of us all through his life. In the frailty of our humanity, our hearts are heavy as we come to terms with our loss. In our sorrow for missing his illuminating companionship, we are reminded that he has been blessed with a life of fulfillment well beyond the biblical “three scores and ten”. Above all, in accordance with the teachings of scriptures, for us as Christians “to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord”. Our dearly departed hero has fought a good fight and kept the faith. He has gone through the pearly gates of splendor to be with the Lord; to put on his ‘crown of righteousness’ and occupy his ‘mansion’ reserved by Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior in his father’s house.
To God be the glory for a victorious life of service and sharing, well lived, for the Lord, God Almighty. Amen

Daddy, I had prayed for God to heal you and I know he answered my prayers, just not in the way I expected. He saw it was better to call you His side, where sickness and pain no longer exist. To God be the glory. I celebrate God for you because I know you ran the race in faith and crossed the finishing line. Thanks for being a loving Father. Your absence will greatly be felt and you will forever be remembered. Rest peacefully Daddy.

Daddy!! My brother! My father! I wake up each day to the painful reminder that you have transitioned to Glory. All am left with to cling unto are the bitter sweet memories of the times we shared, and I know I was blessed to have you not just as an elder brother, because you were much more than that, you were a father. You were My father. Your departure has greatly wounded me! I cry, but not so much because I know you resting in the Father's arms. I would have loved to have you here forever but the Lord had a much better plan. Sleep peacefully Daddy. Till we meet again. Adieu

Daddy! Wake up! It's time for prayers. Let's sing from church hymnary! Let us read passages from the scriptures. Daddy my face is twisted and my heart is bleeding... I need you to wake up and make it all go away! If only it was that easy! Oh father! How greatly I will miss you. You love, care, jokes and beautiful smile. Your words of wisdom and encouragement. Death's so cruel. I thank God Jesus won the battle over it. You ran the race in faith and now, you are with the Creator. Forever in our hearts. Rest peacefully

Death, how hard you hit. How deep you cut. Legends may rest but their legacies live on. We'll dearly miss you Daddy. you're smile, your soft spoken words, and your playful conversations. Your love and your words of encouragement won't be forgotten. We always smiled each time we called or saw you. if the decision was unto man, you will still be here. But the Almighty had a different plan. We love you but God loves you most and though we mourn, we're consoled by the knowledge that you are in a much better place; the Lord's bossom. Till we meet again Daddy. Sleep peacefully

Daddy, it still feels like a dream to me that you are no more. During your time on earth, you thought me how to be strong and never give up and that in everything I should put God first. You were always there and provided for me both physically and spiritually especially during the moments i faced serious health challenges. I will greatly miss the good moments we sat as a family to sing and the jokes you made to put smiles on our faces.
You indeed fought a good fight and ran a good race. May the Angelic host receive you in flying colors. Your love shall forever live within us. Rest in peace Daddy

Daddy Awa, when ever you paid a visit to my office you left me with very sweet memories. Particularly about your days in Bali college. Your interesting jokes and sense of humor were emotional and highly gratifying. This year is a very trying one for the BOBANS as many including a former Principal has pass on to eternity. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. My sincere condolences to Dr. Mrs. Magdalene Awa and family.

It was just a little while ago that we saw you. You spoke to us with the same fatherly love as you've always done. Your words were soothing, your handshake comforting.
You now have transitioned but we hold on to the memories. The Pictures that remind, the words that endure. The loss hurts but yet we are thankful, for your life so impactful, should be nothing but celebrated.

Our family met Mr and Mrs. Awa through their daughter, Marilyn. What a blessing to know the family. It is so nice to have Christ in common.

We remember Mr Awa as such a gentleman. He was kind, soft spoken, and so respectful of others. If he spoke though, we listened.

We will be unable to attend the zoom meeting, but please extend our sympathies to the whole Awa family and especially to Mrs Awa.

With love,

2021 is veritably an annus horribilis! The French describe what is happening as 'une série noire'!Some of our finest are leaving us one after the other!
The last time l saw my handsome, kind, gentle and extraordinarily empathetic 'moyo' was when my uncle, Akamentso Ndhey Tening Mongwa passed!Though not very well, he came over to condole with me for he knew how close l was to my late uncle!
That evening l thanked Claudette and Henry for all the love and care they were giving this very good man!It is not superfluous to reiterate my appreciation to them and others, for making Daddy Ndhey Nkemghe EMT Awa's last days on earth as filled with love and compassion as they were! This is what children are for!
I can write volumes on Ndhey Nkemghe's down to earth good nature, generosity, full to overflowing and often self-deprecating wit, his unmitigated love of peace and concord, his rare ability to adhere to the unsurpassable lesson of life contained in Ecclesiastes about the emptiness of life without a spiritual dimension:"Vanity of vanities, all is vanity"!This in fact was a man who though very erudite and principled, did all in his power to treat with levity even the most serious things so as to avoid needless acrimony and splitting of hairs on issues with little consequence on the final outcome! If Daddy Awa couldn't make you laugh and relax, no one else could! His eternal youthfulness, both of mind and physique was in large part explained by a matchless ability to laugh things away, an ability not to take himself too seriously! Is it not in fact said that laughter is the best medicine?
When his older sister, my stepmother, Mama Miriam Mengyu Fonkam passed on, l acknowledged my family's debt of gratitude to him and the Awa-Muluh family!
Daddy EMT was a man after any good man's heart and will be sorely missed. He was the closest thing to an angel given man's inherent sinful nature.
My sincere and fraternal condolences to Dr. Mrs Magdalene Awa and the immediate and extended families of Awa-Muluh and Halle. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during these difficult times! It shall be well with all of us who mourn the transition into glory of an exceptional human being who, wittingly and even unwittingly, impacted so many lives!
May the Angels wing Daddy Ndhey Nkemghe to meet his Creator!
Sleep easy Ndhey Nkemghe! The good you did to all and sundry more than paid for your room in the celestial city.
Akamentso Ndhey Dr. Fonkam lll.

His Life

BIOGRAPHY OF DADDY, NDHEY NKEMNGHE AWA ELIAS MULUH TANYU’U CHI

June 29, 2021
1. Family Life:
Daddy Awa was born in Pinyin in 1940, in Santa Sub-division, Mezam Division.  He was the first son of Late Pa Simon Awa and Late Ma Carperna Menyam.  At his very early age, he succeeded his grandfather Tanyu’u Chi.  From then he grew up as a family head in the Tanyu’u Chi’s family; an extended polygamous family that has roots in Pinyin and Akum.  Daddy devoted his whole life caring for this enlarged family.  He was also a traditional title holder - NDHEY NKEMNGHE.  Daddy was called NKEMNGHE as a function of his advisory role in the palace, by the Fon of Pinyin in council.  He was later singled out for the title of “Ndheydevelopment,” translated as the “Noble of development.”  Daddy Awa was very friendly, cheerful, loving, kind, soft spoken and a fun-timer.  He would crack jokes and cheer everyone up, even during sad moments.  Daddy got married to Dr. Mrs. Magdalene Shiri Halle-Awa on December 12, 1970.  Daddy is survived by his wife, 6 children, 16 grandchildren, 3 brothers, the entire Tanyu’u Chi family and many friends.

2. Education:
Ndhey Nkemnghe was an agronomist.  As a pupil, Daddy lived with his uncle Late Pa Cheboh, who was a court clerk.  He attended the Native Authority Schools (primary) in Santa and Bafut.  He graduated from Cameroon Protestant College (C.P.C) Bali in 1959, where he obtained the West African School Certificate.  In 1967, he graduated from the New Mexico State University, USA, with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.  Then he went on to attain a Master of Science in Agriculture in 1968, from the Michigan State University, USA.  In the 80s, Daddy attended various agronomy symposiums and internships, obtaining various certificates, two of them from Mississippi State University and University of Illinois, (USA), schools of agriculture.  He believed in education and made it a responsibility to educate his junior ones, without discrimination.

3. Working life:
Upon returning to his Fatherland from the United States, Daddy Awa served as an Agronomist, teaching in the School of Agriculture, Bambili, and later at the Agricultural Research Institute in Bambili.  He was later transferred to the Institute of Agronomic Research, Ekona, South West Province, where he served as an Agricultural Scientist.  From Ekona, he moved to Yaoundé as Deputy General Director of MIDEVIV (La Mission de Développement Des cultures Vivrieres, et Fruitieres) in 1981.  Daddy also served as Director in the Ministry of Agriculture in the Central Regional Delegation and as Technical Adviser in the delegation of agriculture in the N.W. Region.  He retired in June 1994 and spent his time at his Ntarinkon residence.

4. Church life:
Daddy was a devoted Christian of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (P.C.C.) and served the Church in many capacities.  He began as a deacon in the late 1980s in P.C. Bastos, Yaounde.  On October 25, 1998, he was first dedicated as elder in P.C. Azire, Bamenda.  He was chairman of the Finance Committee from 1998 to 2004.  He joined the Christian Men Fellowship (CMF), Azire in 1995.  He was patron to many groups in P.C. Azire and elder to the New Zion Choir Azire, Bamenda.  He was PC Azire’s Property elder for five years.  Pa always held bible studies and prayers with the family.  He was passionate about the spread of the word of God, especially in the Presbyterian Church Mamben, Pinyin.  He decried idol worshiping and got rid of all shrines, stone gods, tree gods, etc., from family members in the village.

5. Social Life:
In 2020, Daddy Awa celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary to his lovely and dedicated wife Dr. Mrs. Awa.  “He was a husband worth his salt,” she said recently, “a pillar to his nuclear and family at large.”  His grandchildren recount him playing with them.  They had fun running around the house with Grandpa and extracting (eating snacks).  His hobbies were farming, reading, and playing games such as scrabble, rook, etc. One could always see him at social gatherings enjoying various musical genres such as “country dance”, makossa, pachanga, and rock and roll.  Daddy Awa was well read, with his favorite book being the Bible.  He loved people, which was evidenced through his frequent hosting of a diverse company that bridged generational, socio economical, and intellectual differences.  From the young to the elderly, he captured their interest in good conversations.  Daddy enjoyed being an active BOBA (Bali Old Boys Association).  He belonged to the Pinyin Development Organization (PDO) and was influential towards promoting developmental projects carried out in Pinyin.  These included road maintenance, electrification and water supply projects, palace and health center constructions, and the renovation of churches.

6. Health Challenges:
Daddy experienced some health challenges in the past 4 years, which limited his trips to the village to attend to family matters, amongst others.  He slept in the Lord on Saturday June 12, 2021 at about 6:30 p.m. in the Bamenda General Hospital.  The family is thankful to all the medical personnel and caregivers who treated and took care of Daddy.

We also want to extend a big Thank You to everyone for the love and support through this difficult time.

Daddy, we love you and you will remain forever in our hearts!

Daddy you have gone to be with the Father and to enjoy eternity, though we cry and mourn that we miss you, we are consoled in that you finished your race and are in a better place.
I remember one of the very first holidays I had as a child. That was about the very first time I had to go for holidays without my siblings. I remember crying, and crying saying I wanted to go home. Daddy was there doing all he could to comfort me, tried taking me out, doing everything to make me happy. I  was a child but can't forget.  We ll move around the compound to the trees. I don't remember the exact discussions but I remember feeling loved.  I remember Daddy teaching us the word of God during morning devotions.  Daddy had a special way of greeting us as children and whenever I knew we will meet him, I ll be looking forward to that. It was fun trying to grab his hand as he will change its position whenever we tried. It was so fun being around daddy.
Thank you Daddy for all the love you and mummy continued to show me and my husband. All the words of advice and the very warm visits. We love you and will miss you dearly.  Good bye Daddy till we meet again in Glory.

Daddy, I just want to tell you that I love you so much and I will miss you dearly. You are one of my greatest role models. Daddy was a very simple man, kind hearted, gentle, smart, hard working, funny, full of humility, knowledgeable , perfectionist and above all, he was a very God fearing man. Daddy showed me so much love while growing up. When ever I visited Daddy, I always meet him busy doing something or reading his bible. He was very knowledgeable in the scriptures. I enjoyed listening to daddy in Church at the pulpit  delivering a sermon or at home or at family gatherings. Daddy was so quite, I never ever heard him raise his voice .I remember during my adventurous adolescent years, daddy will call me, put me down and advice me. Daddy contributed greatly to make me the responsible man I am today. I am grateful for having such a wonderful father in my life. I am going to miss you so much daddy .
I remember eating the very healthy and delicious guavas, mangos he grafted at the research institutes where he worked. As a curious naïve child, I thought grafting was just to put two plants together an tie them up. I tried doing that. I took a young mango shoot and a pear, tied them together, put it at he back of the house for over two weeks and nothing happened. It dried up. How funny was that. I was just a naïve curious kid trying to emulate a dad but have little or no idea. I later told daddy when he visited and he laughed. He made me to understand that ,that is not how its done. He told me how it was done but at that age, I could not comprehend. later in my carrier, I was able to cultivate Irish potatoes by grafting the stems. I could then understand all what daddy said. Everyone in the Awa and Halle family can testify that they have eaten some of the delicious mango, guava or pear that was grafted in daddy's research institute. I have a lot to talk about you daddy but I will leave it like this for now. I just want to say you had a great impact in my life and that you are great father.
Daddy E.M.T Awa, I just want to let you know that, though you have gone to be with the lord, I will never forget you. I love you so much and I will hold high the very strong attributes you instill in my life like; love, kindness, compassion, honesty, truth, humility  and above all, faith in God. We will continue to make you proud and we will continue to carry your legacy forward.
Adieu Daddy, Adieu Daddy.
Will always love you Daddy. Bye Bye.

The famous initials, EMT, the ever easy and friendly demeanor, the ready jokes that came from as clean a heart as any human being can have!Always quick on the rebound as someone used to thinking out of the box:this was the Ndhey Nkemghe l knew and who will be sorely missed.
I visited him when he was stationed at IRAD Ekona, a once world famous research centre. He took me for a drink and a bite at the Senior Service Club and l naively asked him why the clubs were stratified!Speaking in Pinyin he calmly explained that if that wasn't the case, the very junior staff will each time they receive their pay, drink, get drunk, pee all over the place and insult their bosses and say how they could kill someone and pay!
Later in life l reflected on this and couldn't have agreed more with the analysis!ln fact there is nothing like a classless society as George Orwell's allegory of 'Animal Farm' teaches us!
I equally remember Ndhey Nkemghe calling 'Delegate', 'Delicate' and so many other Ndhey Nkemghe special 'speak' à la George Orwell's Animal Farm!
Sacré Ndhey Nkemghe as the French will say!
