This is a tribute to fine gentleman, an honourable and a God-fearing man.
A tribute to my dad, Dr S.U. Osemota.
The bible says that children, are a gift to parents,
I would add that good parents are a gift to a child.
My dad was a good parent and was God's gift to me, my siblings and to many others who saw his as a father.
I dare say that my relationship with my dad, was a very special one. As his first child, I could do no wrong, those who have tried to come between us will know what I mean.
Dad was loving, kind, compassionate and he loved the Lord.
So growing up, our home was a never ending haven for people staying or visiting, or passing through and praying for us. It was a delightful place of balance and spiritual awakening.
Since daddy loved God and loved the church, we by extension, loved God and loved the church.
I remember how at 8 years old, I was one of the youngest members of the Adult choir of the St. Paul's Anglican church.
Dad would take me to church services, to choir practices and to many other church activities that I was involved in.
All these, no doubt helped nurture my Christian faith.
Daddy loved to learn, and he read widely.
He had all sorts of books in his library.
From a very tender age, I would read his books on religion and spirituality, psychology, mathematics, logic, technology and of course, story books for my age group. I have no doubt too, that this shaped my mind and my curiosity to learn more.
Thanks to daddy, I got into one of the best secondary schools at the time and even when he left Nigeria to study for his Masters in the United States, he still dutifully ensured the continued health and well being of his children he left behind.
I remember how dad, knowing that I loved Chemistry and Biology, would send me books on the subjects. This helped me significantly in becoming one of the top students in my class.
It was therefore, no surprise that years later, after working in a particular field of profession, I would return to the university for a second degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical science and obtain a first class degree. This was all thanks to a foundation of a good start and a dedicated father. Thankfully, dad was aware of this before he died.
Dad was not a financially wealthy man in the normal sense of the word. He was a humble man and lacked nothing good.
He invested in his children, his family, and in others. He also invested in the things of God and was blessed in return.
Yes, dad was a friend of God, and God kept him, blessed him, protected him till it was time for his home coming.
Dad fought the good fight of faith and has finished his race and leaves behind a solid legacy of his good name, the love of God, a faith in Christ Jesus, high moral values, education, and last but not the least, gardening.
Yes, daddy loved to be close to nature, he loved the outdoors and loved gardening.
The mammoth void that daddy leaves behind shall be filled with pleasant memories of everything he stood for.
Adieu Daddy, rest well, till we meet again.
Love you always.
Your daughter, OFURE
