OH,DAN!
It is amazing to think a year has passed since we lost you Dan.  We had many times of sharing, and what great laughs we have had together.  I have never been one good with a pen, so understand the procrastination, and accept this late entry.
Our family home was near Underhill, Manitoba, our little hamlet where most social events and services were offered in the earlier years.  Many things changed during the next 20 years.  The family got larger, the community got smaller, and the older children became adults.  Barbara traveled to Europe without any idea of where or what her travels would be. Communication in those days was very different, inefficient, and expensive by phone.  We got a picture of this "nice guy" she had met at the US army base in Germany.  We poured over it.  He was darned handsome, and looked strong and honourable.  Soon the word came: Barbara had married Mr. Dan McQueen.  The next chapter was Barbara was living in California and then before long she was mother to her first born, the first branch from our generation.  . The time arrived and the whole family was reeling....Barb and her husband Dan, and baby Tonya were coming to Underhill!  A hippie-coloured van drove up the driveway.  How excited we were to see Barb, meet Dan and hold that baby!  First impressions are lasting and meeting Dan made this saying so true.  Dan accepted each of the family and all our idiosyncrasies! How blessed we have been having him in our family.
Barb and Dan joined our family gatherings on many occasions, by driving up to Canada.  I remember Dan being so shocked at Canada Highway Number One that runs across our large country that looked so impressive on the map, and discovering it was a two-laned highway with two way traffic...unheard of in California.  Dan always stepped in to help with whatever was needed to be done and he always was reliable to get his task done, whether the correct tools were available or not...just improvise!
One of our week long family reunions was hosted by our aunt and uncle and their family on their ranch.  What a wonderful time we had, and lots of stories.  The night of unplanned supper, a group of us went for the "special" of fish and chips at a local spot.  It was a great spot along the lake front, with outdoor setting on that hot evening.  the waitress brought us our water, and our menus.  She returned to take our orders.  We ordered a few beers and drinks,  She responded to our beer choice "I'm sorry, we are out of that", but we managed to get something to quench our thirsts. Licking our chops to order the recommended special of the day, she took our meal orders, but we heard the same "I'm sorry!  We are out of that" or "I'm sorry, we only offer that on Friday".  We got our orders in.  We waited and waited for our meals, and drink reorders.  They finally arrived served by a new waiter.  Dan asked "So, where is Sorry!"  It was hilarious!'
Mom made the trip to Colorado for many years come winter in Manitoba, spending a lot of weeks with the McQueens.  How she enjoyed all the hustle and bustle of the family's activities through school, work, shopping and outings.  Together Barb, Dan and family all contributed to Mom's days.  Dan had no irritation with Mom's big demand for "A cuppa tea!".  He accommodated her just fine; in fairness to Mom, she needed tea, but could go a long time without a hunt for a washroom with all that tea aboard!  In return for his understanding, Mom would bake Dan some pies!
On one of my travels to Loveland, I arrived by air.  Barb and Dan picked me up at Denver, a huge airport, kinda scary for a country bumpkin. I made sure they had the gate of arrival and time etc, and what would I do if they didn't get there?! Barb tells Dan "you can pick her out...she will be wearing a brightly coloured outfit!" and eagle-eyed Dan spied me, and I was so happy that we had eye contact from that throng of people. Dan told me "It was easy to see you!"
We had the privilege to attend Tonya's wedding in Switzerland.  What a lot of organization to accommodate the different guests travelling for the event.  Some family stayed on awhile after the wedding, and we joined Dan and Barb at a hotel for several nights while Christine and Casey took a second honeymoon side trip, leaving their sweet little on w with Grandpa and Grandma to babysit with care.  There were special instructions for the job.  Bedtime such an hour; breakfast this food etc.  When we contacted then the first m orning to reconfirm our schedule, Brent asked how the first morning was going with the little one.  Dan reported "Just fine! Piper is having breakfast Grandpa made for her.  She loved her hotdog!"  We knew for sure that hot dogs were not on the breakfast menu list!
The following are some stories that came from our travel times to Mexico with Dan and Barb:
Travelling in Mexico has led to many exciting adventures as the days of old, most traffic maneuverability was based on the law of survival.  Dan and Barbara had a tremendous sense of adventure and were a perfect fir for some of our experiences.  Travel on "THE BUS" was great fun and the adventures we had were directly proportional to the amount of tequila consumed on a travel day.  But Dan! You missed the one day on THE BUS that we were sure wishing you had been with us.  All the shocks were broken on the vehicle, and it was a rough, and I mean rough, bumpy ride!  A young lady that was also taking in a bus ride was hanging on for dear life, both arms busy holding on to keep her from being thrown to the ceiling.  Her nice open blouse was a great exit for her boobs to pop out and shake around...she could not take either hand off the support to pop them back in!
We also had some interesting trips with the local taxi drivers that were always trying to scare the pants off the tourist for twice the price of a normal fare.  Did you realize that in the old days, seat belts were not to hold the passengers safely in place but instead were used to hold the seats from sliding around in the taxi?!  With each breaking of the cab the back seat would slide, and Dan just would give the seat a glare!
We did not speak any Spanish, but Dan had learned some of the language in his younger days.  One evening he negotiated a ride with a young Mexican sho spoke no English, and are game, we spoke very little Spanish.  Dan sat in the front seat and his size intimidated the young driver who had no idea where we wanted to go.  As we left the bright lights of Puerto Vallarta , he took a wrong turn and soon we were all lost.  The further we drove in the dark, the more we were convinced that we were going to be robbed.  Little did we know that the poor guy driving the cab thought we were goin to rob him! Fortunately, we met another cab in the middle of nowhere that explained how to get to our resort and everyone had a good laugh about our adventure.  Dan commented that we should have been a little suspicious when the driver's name was "Chicken Afraido!"
Another cabbie ride Dan negotiated.  We were trying to set up for later in the evening, wanting to make sue we would have a ride home later that night from the downtown.  We were assured that this cabbie would be there....he could accommodate 5 adults nicely in his vehicle.  The cabbie wanted to take us right then and get his fare, but Dan arranged a late pick up.  The cabbie sure wanted the fare, and wanted Dan to remember that his cabbie name was "Pinky"!  Dan didn't think it would be a problem.  "And I don't know whey they call me Pinky" he says on the cab late pick up.  "I think I could!" Dan replied.  Those of us hearing this from the back seat had a hard time to keep laughter below howls.  We were dodging in and around cars, and the cabbie confesses to recent "learning" how to drive, and Dan says "And still learrrrrning!"  Dan paid the cabbie extra for the entertainment after all his negotiation time!
There are many more stories that could be shared.  We treasure our time together, and you will always be missed, and always be remembered with love.  Bev and Brent

We have so many memories over the years from our boating and camping trips but one stands out from the others. One of our camping trips was at Seminoe reservoir and both of our kids were able to go with us. We had a beautiful and clear night for star gazing using star charts and I believe Mars was larger and more noticeable that night. Later in the evening Dan started to tell us a story by the campfire. The story was about an old nomadic tribe that used to travel across Wyoming. They were the first to make “special longhouses” on wheels so they didn’t have to take them apart when they moved. It was when he started talking about rival tribes with different camper brand names that the story was total B.S.
We all busted out laughing over his “Winnebago” tribe story that we all fell for.
We love all of our memories and will cherish them forever.

My Condolences to Dan's family.
I first met Dan at Hot Line School in Grand Junction in 1985. Dan and I were selected as underground Instructors and were to instruct the class on how to splice 600 amp cables.
First Dan and I had to pull in three 1000 mcm cables into a splicing vault. The cables are very heavy and I really appreciated Dan's strength. Dan and I talked about line work and had a few beers after class. Dan explained that he was a line foreman and I explained that I was a Journey Lineman and lead lineman, we had great conversations  about doing Line work and promised to keep in touch. I retired from the City of Longmont Power and Communications in 2000 and found out that The City of Loveland Light and Power was looking for a Substation Technician and SCADA Technician. I went to work in 2001 and Had Dan as my General Foreman.  I really enjoyed working with Dan and he was an excellent supervisor, and became friends. I have many great memories of Dan and Barb, and will greatly miss him.  Heaven just got a great man in Dan!

Dan and I first met at Flak Kaserne, Augsburg, Germany in 1969.  I thought it was only  sociably to introduce Dan to Munich and Octoberfest, which was just starting his first weekend in Germany.  He really enjoyed the Octoberfest and had an interesting experience the next morning.  That night we left Dan in a spare bedroom at an apartment of some friends, five young women, which was also a surprise to him.  The next morning Dan awoke in a bare bones bedroom, no linen on the bed, just a mattress and bars on the window.  At first Dan thought he was in jail but he tried the door which was unlocked.  Not knowing where he was Dan ventured down the hall.  He found one of the young women in the kitchen, Betsy (which I later married), and had to reintroduce himself.  Not remember much about the night before Dan wasn't sure if anyone would return for him.  In his typical personality Dan did not worry, he knew everything would workout.  Since that time Dan has been a wonderful friend and we made many more trips to Munich, Berchtesgarden and Garmisch until Betsy and I left Germany.  Even though we lived in different states we always stayed in touch and tried to meet every couple years.  Betsy and I will miss Dan's smile personality and friendship.

When Uncle Dan and Aunt Barb were back in Canada for a family wedding, we all got together and camped out. Drinks, food, music, fires, and good chats were happening all around us. Uncle Dan brought out the best tequila I have ever tried, no burn and little bit of a lime taste. To this day I can’t remember what it is called, but we stood around that bottle and chatted for a while, talking about their recent travels, recommendations on where Matt and I should go, and even plans for us to come up to Colorado, for him to show us all the good spots since Matt has never been. That was the first time Matt had met Uncle Dan and Aunt Barb, even with only meeting that once he invited us down with open arms and excitement and that really says so much about the man he was.

When I close my eyes and think of you, I think of Hawaiian shirts, good tequila, and vacations. I didn’t get to know you as well as i would have liked, but that doesn't mean you didn’t leave an impression on me. Whenever we spent any time together it was a blast! You were fun, interesting, kind, genuine, intense, intriguing , full of stories, wisdom, and life lessons. I will always remember you as someone full of life who I looked up to as how to experience and enjoy life to the fullest,  You left an impression on everyone who met you and will greatly be missed, but never forgotten.

Every tequila shot I take will be for you Uncle Dan.

Love Heather & Matt

Brother in law Dan

From Don Calverley:
A few memories about my brother-in-law, Dan McQueen.
- I first heard about Dan from Mom. Barb sent us some pictures from Germany of her travels. One of the pics was of this Army guy brushing his teeth.  Cool, a US army guy. Next we hear, they are married. First time I met him was when Barb, Dan and Tonya made their first trip to Canada. I remember him being much larger than what the picture had indicated. This guy has a presence.
- Once in my teen years when I was being a bit of a snotty punk towards Mom, he shot me THE LOOK. Ouch... words were not needed.  I don't know what it was like to be one of his kids, but I bet you behaved if you got that look.  Curious to know if Peter, Alex and Casey had ever been on the recieving end.
- In the summer of 1975, I went from Manitoba to Pacifica California with Barb, Dan and 3 little kids.... in a Chevy Nova.... with no air conditioning.  Long trip.  While there Barb and Dan took me to my first concert, Ten Years After and Slade at Winterland in San Francisco on August 4, 1975. Glad Dan was there as there were a lot of strange hippy type folks, and they smelled kinda funny. Felt safe with Dan moving through the crowds to get to our seats. Such a memory. Believe it or not, this concert can be found on Youtube. You can't see us in the video, but we were there!
I went to a party somewhere in Pacifica with Barb and Dan. Met a few of Dan's army/school buddies. One guy I mentioned to Dan later, saying he had a strange look. He said, "He was in Vietnam, and he had seen and did some stuff."  I understood.
To return home, I flew from San Francisco. Dan took me to the airport. So we go up to the counter and the person behind the desk says, "And where are we flying today Miss?" Wow, I guess the tie-dye t-shirt, long hair and summer tan was enough to confuse some. Anyhow, Dan laughed about this, way too much in my opinion, and brought it up a few times much to my dismay.
- One time out driving in the mountains in Colorado, we were in the 4x4 Scout. We were listening to "Colorado Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver. We hit a nasty patch of ice and were headed towards a really steep ditch, like a three hundred foot drop type of ditch... he manhandled that Scout like a master and manoeuvred us back to safety. I remember watching him as I did not want to look out the window.... and after him laughing and saying, "Woah, that was close huh?"
- Dan shared a birth date with 2 of my favourite legends, Wayne Gretzky and Eddie Van Halen. Every time I would mention that they shared the same birth date, he would say, "Those guys are lucky huh."
- After Uncle Laurent died, that Christmas, we were out in the hot tub having a few drinks in the winter air.  He pointed to a star that he had tagged for his Dad, and the one beside it he said, "That one is for Laurent."  When Barb phoned and told me he was gone, that night I went out to pick a star for Dan, but we were covered in cloud here in Winnipeg. So I have decided to wait until l go back to Colorado, and then I will pick a star for you Dan.... and beside that star, one for Eddie.
This is a tough time for all of us who knew him. A no-nonsense, get it done kind of man, a great husband, father and grandfather.
Rest in Peace Dan.

The best host dad I could imagine

When Dan picked me up at the airport in 1986, 17 years old, from a long flight from a tiny village in Denmark, his warmness and kindness immediately made me calm, and I knew that this year with a completely foreign family on the other side of the world, would be wonderful and lifechanging for me. Dan supported me and made me feel so welcome and throughout my year with the wonderful McQueens, I had a solid base in Dan, when it was hard to be away from my parents and brothers in Denmark.

I remember his wit and his ability to put everyboy at ease. I remember how he teased and how he gave the biggest and warmest hugs. I remember how he loved his daughters to bit and how proud he was of them. I remember the love and affection that he showed Barb. They were so so lovely and strong together. I remember his projects around the house, helping him to build the porch e.g. That was a special thing to do together.

I treasure the adventures we had together to exciting places in the States and Canada in the camper. I loved the camperlife. Thank you for showing me all the amazing places.

Dan touched everybodys lives in such a beautiful way. Even my parents whom he never met, but he took care of their daughter for a whole year. A big responsibility.

Thank you Dan for the year you invited me to be part of your family, and for feeling that you loved me from afar ever since. I loved you too, hope you knew that.

May you rest in peace.
Love, Lisbet
