Our family is so thankful for all of love and support that we have received. We are very grateful for those of you that have reached out to make a donation in Dana's honor. In response, we set up an account in Dana's memory, which was donated in full to First Tee Atlanta. As a family, we felt this organization reflected two passions in Dana's life - golf and helping children.

Please share your pictures of Dana in our gallery. Details about the pictures would be appreciated. Please also feel free to leave a tribute to Dana below. We love to hear your memories together.

I still cannot believe that I cannot pick up the phone and call you. I cannot believe we are not looking forward to the next time we will see each other or go on an adventure together. I miss you so much. It sucks not having my best friend around. Heck, I still miss your Mom and Dad. They were so good to me during our early college years. I am especially thinking of you lately. I am speaking at the Celebration of Life for my Mom in just a few days. She really cared for you. It's a family celebration and you were always considered part of our large extended family. I made sure I included your picture with her (at her 89th birthday} to be placed in her memories slide show. My brothers and sisters will enjoy seeing your smiling face. I know you will be there with me.

I miss you, my friend. You were a wonderful father to our girls. You consistently showed them what a father should be. Your love for them was never questioned. Your quirky nature brought many smiles to their faces. I will never forget how happy you were having all three of your girls together in Savannah just this past January. Even though we parted marital ways years ago, your ongoing friendship meant the world to me. I know that you are watching from above, and my promise to you will never change. Hugs

I worked with Dana as a real estate agent at Coast Equities in Long Beach. My name at that time was Cheryl Sutton. Dana was my favorite person at the company. He was sweet, funny, charming, and smart. Everyone liked Dana. In 1980 I left real estate and joined the Air Force. One of the last times I saw Dana was my wedding at March AFB in 1982. Over the years we lost touch with each other. I am so sad to learn of his passing. I have looked at the gallery and read the tributes and it is comforting to know he had such a great life. How wonderful to be so deeply loved. To his dear family and friends please accept my sincerest condolences.

Looking through all these pictures has made me realize how much Dana lived his life to the fullest. His infectious smile shows the true love he felt for so many in his life. What an amazing father he was to all his girls. So thankful for the time he had with Barbara. Although I didn’t see much of Dana over the past 20 years, every time I did he made me feel like I was still his kid “sister-in-law” and always greeted me with a big hug and loud “aunt Kacky”! Thank you Dana for loving Donna, Lauren and Jaime so deeply. You were a good man! I’m sorry to miss his celebration of life tomorrow. Prayers of comfort to all. Love, Aunt Kacky

Missing my sweet love on Valentine's Day even more. Thank you for the beautiful life and endless love we shared. I'll continue to love, honor, respect and miss my beautiful man forever. As I mentioned every day, you gave me 1000s of reasons to love you ... you are the best man, husband, father, friend and love, and I am grateful for not only our life since I moved to Georgia, but for the deep love that started almost 45 years ago.

In 1978 we moved into our first house and within months decided to install a hot tub. We wanted it sunk in the ground, so a hole had to be dug and the ground was hard clay. Ron proceeded to dig a hole. At some point Dana came to visit for a weekend and this shows what a good friend he was....he helped dig the hole! The hole was nearly dug and I (Carole) decided the hole needed to be a few inches to the left. Dana helped make the hole wider. It was hard work, digging with a pick-ax and shovels. That is a friend indeed.

I'm so sorry that Dana has left us. I will truly miss him. He was so happy and so full of life. I always enjoyed his company. On the day that Dana died that night I saw Dana in a dream. He had that big smile on his face and a pretty woman on each arm. The next morning my son told me that Dana had passed. I knew then that what I had seen was a couple of angels taking Dana home. Rest in peace my friend. We will meet again.

His Life
March 1, 2019

I promise to complete this section when I can speak. Sorry for the delay! Especially because it's such a great story.

Dana's childhood

February 12, 2019

Dana’s parents Shirley Traylor and Mainard (Mel) Leach were married in Albany, Oregon on September 22, 1946. Dana was born in Eureka, California on July 1, 1950. He weighed 6 lbs 7oz. Shirley and Mel brought Dana back to his home in Oregon.

Three years later as a family they moved to Long Beach. Dana’s baby brother Alvin Leach was born on January 26, 1954.Around 1956 they moved to the bay area where both children attended Fairmont elementary school and spent summers visiting their Grandpa at the lumber mill. They both had fond memories of their carefree summers.Dana had a large group of friends back then that included Scott B and Joe B., David S, Donald K, and “the Turners boys”.

Eventually, Shirley and Mainard dissolved their marriage and Shirley moved into a place of her own with Dana and Alvin. In the same building was a tall handsome man name Williard (Bill) Hintze. They fell in love and ended up living out the rest of their days happily married.Bill had a son of his own, Douglas who became a beloved Step-Brother and Uncle in our family.

Bill and Shirley were married in 1962 and shortly thereafter they moved the whole family to Wilmington, California. Dana attended Wilmington Junior High where he met Deborah MacAlpine.  The two fell in love in Junior High.

Dana and Debbie both attended Banning High School together.  Dana loved playing sports. He played basketball, baseball, golfed and was on the bowling team. Dana dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. He actually played baseball with the minor leagues but a shoulder injury prevented from progressing to the major leagues.

He and his friends also had a rock band in which Dana played the drums. He actually currently still has a beautiful set of drums that he occasionally played.

Dana graduated from Banning High School in 1968…with Honors of course.

College Days and beyond

February 13, 2019

Dad was a young car enthusiast. His first car was a 1954 Chevy given to him by his Aunt. He sold it to get his 1964 Impala. This was a true show car. Decked out to the max and he was very proud of it.  Unfortunately it was uninsured and stolen from his house. He was HEARTBROKEN!  Eventually he moved on to his red Porsche, he owned a beautiful Cadillac, a 1959 Mercedes, and an an El Dorado.

Dana and Debbie got married in 1969. Debbie was a hair dresser and Dana was in college and working at Firestone. From 1969-1972 Dana enrolled in Dominguez Hills Community College and then transferred to California State University, Long Beach.  He earned his bachelors degree in business accounting.

He joined the Airforce with the hopes to be a pilot but his eyesight was not 20/20 so that didn't work out so he landed in accounting. Dana did his first 6 months of basic training at Moffett Federal Airfield. Dana and Debbie went to Texas to Shepherd Airforce Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. At that point he did not want to reenlist so he enlisted as a reserve.

In 1973 Dana and Debbie moved to San Jose near Dana's parents where he landed his job Monsanto.

In 1974 Carey Dianne Leach was born in Mountain View, California. The three lived together but only for a short while.  With the desire to be a successful breadwinner Dana temporarily followed his career to Missouri to work for Monsanto. Debbie and Carey stayed in Long Beach to be near both sets of Grandparents.  The distance and time changed the relationship and Dana and Debbie divorced.

Two years later, around 1977, he eventually left Monsanto and returned to Huntington Beach where he and Barbara DeLaRonde reunited. Dana decided to establish a career in real estate so he bought a triplex in Long Beach and they lived together for a 3 years. Barbara and Dana truly loved each other from that point forward, but for both of them, life took many turns before their love story played out.

Dana sold his triplex to buy his home on Lemon Street in Long Beach.  This was a sweet home where the windows were always open, 94.7 The Wave played endless smooth jazz, and the doves cooed in the morning. Carey loved to spend time there! Her and her Dad would do home improvement projects and "rock out" together!

See the next chapter to learn what happens next...

Missing my Dad today! He would have 70 years old and still youthful!

Happy Birthday Dad!
I am sure we would be doing something super fun if you were still with us! Geoff your post reminds me the days Dad and I spent playing catch in the street. Dad would always call me a wild woman because I threw the ball so crazy.

I am grateful for those moments and have always cherished even as a little child.
The empty space that I cannot seem to fill will forever ache without you however, I know you are happy because I can still feel your eternal joyful spirit. For the time I have left remaining here I try everyday to exude pure love as you did. Its not always easy but then I think of you and I am reminded again to let go of the small stuff and allow grace for those that are struggling.

I am holding onto faith that it was your sweet spirit that rose from you the day you passed and I cannot wait until I get time with you again.

My Hero on his birthday

July 1, 2020
Today Dana would be joining me in the 70 and over club and it makes me think of some of the birthdays we shared together and how extra special those birthdays were.

When Dana turned 50 he threw a big party in Lake Tahoe. I had just met my wonderful wife to be, Janet, earlier that year and this trip to Lake Tahoe would be Dana's first chance to meet her.  Of course, he couldn't have been more wonderful and she couldn't have been more impressed with my best friend.  We felt like honored guests at the family birthday dinner celebration.

Seven years ago, for my 64th birthday, Janet and I flew to Atlanta to spend it with Dana and Barbara. He asked how I wanted to celebrate...thinking we would go out on the town or do something extravagant. Instead I wanted to spend our time together doing what we did when we were kids together....make that, big kids together. During our first year of college we played baseball, almost daily, at his Mom and Dad's house minutes from Cal State Dominguez Hills. They had an empty garage and we created a perfect two man game. The batter stood at the back of the garage and the pitcher stood on the sidewalk by the street.  We used a tennis ball. If the batter hit the ball out of the garage (though half the fun was seeing it ricochet around the garage) it had to get by the pitcher for a hit, on the fly for an extra base hit etc.  If we weren't playing baseball we were playing basketball or going bowling. Pretty innocent fun for kids our age but we sure had fun together and I wanted to feel that fun again. Dana agreed and we spent days playing catch in his yard and finding a local church to play basketball. Still one of my favorite birthdays having fun with my best friend...my hero.
