Another boat story

May 16, 2014

Mark, you reminded me of one of my favorites....we were new boaters and we went to anchor in Short Beach. There was a lot of current so we thought it would be a good idea to double anchor. So we threw an anchor off the back of the boat and the front of the boat. When it was time to leave we realized that we were stuck...both anchors were holding us in opposite directions and we couldn't move the boat to pick up either one of them. It soon became apparent that we would have to cut one of the anchors. We did so and I told Dan to just leave the anchor. We picked up the other anchor and the boat had now drifted far away from the cut anchor. Dan said he wanted to jump in and get the anchor. I kept saying it was too dangerous and we should just leave it and the next thing I heard was SPLASH! Dan was in the water and swimming and swimming toward the anchor. The boat engines had also picked up some muck so now here I am trying to get the boat running on just one engine over to where Dan was swimming. After what seemed like forever he got to the spot where he thought the anchor was and he stopped swimming to jump down and pick up the anchor...and he found....are you ready? the water was only up to his knees! He could have walked the whole way! The happy ending is that he DID get that anchor!!

Running aground

May 14, 2014

So, one day I'm riding on the crusin' Cats with Dan and Sue around Jones Beach inlet. Then Dan says "Hey, you want to take the wheel for a few minutes?" Of course I reply "Sure!" Within about two minutes I took a left turn on the wrong side of the chanel marker and ran the boat aground. Now we are stuck in the mud in very shallow water. Dan was about as cool as one could be under the circumstances. He just called Sea-Tow to come and pull us out and we continued on our way like nothing happened. And he never mentioned it again.
Now that is cool. Of course, Dan did it a few times without my help. Probably just cruising along enjoying the passing scenery. Barry was always watching them channel markers for us on those long boat rides up to City island or Fire Island. We had lots of good time aboard the Crusin' Cats.
