His Life
August 11, 2018

Daniel “Dan” Hugh Heffernan went home to the Lord on August 9, 2018, due to complications following acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDs) caused by the flu and pneumonia.

Dan was born on November 22, 1970, in Lakewood, NJ. As their fourth child and first boy, Dan brought great joy to his parents, Dan and Cathy Heffernan, and will be sorely missed by them and his five siblings.

As a youth, Dan was a talented athlete, excelling in basketball and track. He was also accomplished academically, attending Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ (1986-1989) and graduating from St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH (1990-1993) with a BA degree in History. In 2004, Dan was inducted into the St. Anselm Hall of Fame for his outstanding performance on the college's cross country team.

Dan enjoyed fishing, reading, and spending time with his family and friends. He was devoted to his Catholic faith and encouraged others to attend Mass. Overcoming struggles with alcoholism, he assisted at Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings and was a support to many who suffered with addictions. Throughout his life, Dan offered his time and talents in whatever way he could. He supported many charitable causes and was a dedicated Meals on Wheels driver at the time of his death. He will be remembered as a kind and loving soul who cared deeply for those who were fortunate to know him.

Dan is survived by his parents, Daniel and Catherine Heffernan, sisters Eileen (Dennis) Kraus, Deirdre (Chris) Yeager, Maureen (Chris) Clark, Siobhan (Michael) Bedford, and brother Paul (Mai) Heffernan, as well as 15 nieces and nephews, Michael Kraus, Dennis Kraus, Nathaniel Kraus, Stephen Kraus, Maggy Kraus, Timothy Kraus, Katie Kraus, Christian Yeager, Sean Yeager, Colin Yeager, Evan Yeager, Brian Clark, Megan Clark, Matthew Clark, and Andrew Heffernan.

Dan’s friends and extended family are invited to his viewing at the DiCostanzo family owned Lakewood Funeral Home from 5:00 to 8:00pm on Monday, August 13, 2018. Dan’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30am on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at St. Veronica’s Church in Howell, NJ. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dan’s life. A private burial at Heaven’s Gate Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY, will follow the Funeral Mass.
