Her Life

Honoring Darla

September 16, 2015

This isn't really a biography of my mom, or perhaps, I'm starting with the last chapter first.  But we wanted to share some of the things she supported and enjoyed, in case you would like to make a contribution to charity in lieu of flowers.

Many of you know she supported childhood literacy, and literacy for all ages. She was a kindergarten teacher in her early professional years, as well as a teacher for first and fifth grades.  Later in Minnesota, she coordinated the Adult Basic Education program, and taught as a tutor at Moorhead Technical College. She was a passionate and skillful teacher, so any educational non-profit would be fitting.

In family travels, we visited many national, state and local parks.  There was almost always an annual autumn trip to go "leaf-looking," and summers found us picnicking in many a state park, which was something she always enjoyed.  A donation to a park of your choice would be a nice tribute.

Two specific causes she supported were The Wounded Warrior Project, and The International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, TN.  She also loved cooking, gardening, bird-watching, attending the theatre and listening to live music.  Any charity that supports those causes would be a meaninful choice.

Thanks for honoring her with any contributions you might make.
