He was a graduate student in Cognitive Psychology and wanted to know what I was doing with computers at the Stanford AI Lab. I explained my work in computer sound synthesis and composition. I then asked him to tell me what he knew about perception. He knew a lot, so we learned from one another, which continued over the years; I, more from him! Our friendship became ever more rich through the years, as he advised and nurtured many composers and researchers over the years. Among his first students at CNMAT was Matt Wright, who credits David as the(!) major influence in his professional life, and who just a few months ago was appointed Executive Director of CCRMA to help Chris Chafe run CCRMA and its future. So David's legacy was transported to many places, and now with Matt Wright as his agent, back to where David and I began!
This memorial website was created in memory of our friend and colleague, David Wessel, 72, born on October 6, 1942 and passed away on October 13, 2014. We will remember him forever.

Computer Music Journal & expressive musical interfaces
When I was starting the Computer Music Journal in 1976, David's encouragement meant a lot to me. He was supportive to many of us as we explored the physics, math and psychoacoustics of timbre and the design of more expressive music instrument interfaces and controllers, at a time when their was little financial support for computer music. David was a considerate, intelligent and kind musician/researcher with a fun sense of humor. -- John Snell
