David Lewis Long Obituary

David Lewis Long died on August 18, 2016, in Zephyrhills, Pasco County, Florida at the age of 73.  He was born in Houston, Texas, on July 12, 1943, to James Alvin Long and Vivienne Virginia Peratt.

 

David grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he attended the American School, graduating in 1961.  He enrolled at the University of Colorado and transferred after two years to the University of California at Berkeley where he received a BA in Economics in 1966.  He later received graduate degrees from Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management and an MBA in 1986 from Florida Institute of Technology.

 

David worked for AIG from 1968 to 1977, being posted to New York City, Beirut, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and California.  From 1978 to 1982 he lived in Caracas, Venezuela, working for Raymark International, Bank of America, and General Electric.  He later moved to Florida where he worked for General Development and BellSouth, retiring in 2005. From 2003 to 2015 he resided in Century Village, Deerfield Beach and moved to Zephyrhills, Florida, in March of 2015.

 

David was married five times and has three daughters and three grandchildren.  He had many interests and even more friends.  He was an accomplished musician playing the piano, guitar, and other musical instruments and had a band as a teenager.  He worked and traveled in 127 countries.  He played in international rugby tournaments in the Far East, co-established the Kiwanis Club in Bangkok, Thailand, and served as Secretary of Rotary International in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  He also won two bridge titles and became a Bridge Life Master.  Besides traveling and bridge, David enjoyed keeping up with old classmates from Rio. 

 

David was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Susan (Long) Callahan.  He is survived by his three daughters - Shelley (Jeff) Summerlin-Long of Chapel Hill, NC, and Natasha and Christina Long of Miami, FL; three grandchildren – Chenoah, Jonah, and Marley Summerlin-Long of Chapel Hill, NC; his brother Frank (Monica) Long of St. Augustine, FL, his sister Kayte Long and her partner Mona D’Agostino of Atlanta, GA; his brother-in-law James Callahan of N. Falmouth, MA, as well as an aunt, many cousins, nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

 

A memorial service will be held at the South Miami Elks Lodge #1676 at 6304 S.W. 78 Street Miami, FL, on September 10 at 3pm.
