You would’ve been 98 today ♥️ I still think of you often. Your many words of wisdom and endless rounds of Texas Hold ‘em. The way you’d stab at the balls playing pool, yet somehow make the shots. I miss you. If it’s true I get to see you again someday, that’d be really awesome. Happy birthday, Mr. Grove.

David Grove was a narcistic sadist who sufferd delusions of grandure, who psychologically abused his younger sister to the extent that his parents welcomed the opportunity to sign papers allowing him to drop out of high school, join the Sea Farers' International Union and ship out of the country, although he was under-aged. During World War II he joined the Army, and was stationed at Ft. Polk in Louisiana. There he met my mother, Beatrice "Johnnie," Perry. They married. They bore a son, Stephen Edward Grove. He began his investigative career screening applicants for employment at Phillips Petroleum, headquartered in Bartesville, OK. They moved from there to Westminster, CO., a suburb northwest of Denver, CO. There as she worked as his secretary, without pay, he began cheating on her to the extent that even her family Doctor Zuchermann warned her of his infidelity. She kept working though. He honed his investigative skills with her assistance at Retail Cedit Company, now Equifax. Making big money then he decided to launch out on his own. He bought a bunch of used cars from Knapp Chevrolet, outfitted them with 2-way radios, started a security guard service complete with uniforms and all. He landed a big cotract supplying security services to the esteemed "Security Life Building." All was great until those guards were caught stealing from the offices they'd been hired to protect. David, in the news, decided it a good time to move, far away, 1200 miles, to Houston, TX where no-one knew his name. There he started again, from his home at 8519 Hazen St., Houston, TX. Soon once again he began spending beyond his means. He leased an office in the Union Carbide Building in Greenway Plaza.
He lost at that and had to rent in a collapsing strip center off Richmond Ave.
By that time his primary clientelle consisted of women seeking divorce and consolation, which he was delighted to supply. When he ran out of money he ran, as always, from Colorado to Texas, to New Mexico or wherever, always dependant on my mother, divorced or not. So go on, all you who knew him so well! You never knew him at all!
The only boxing match he ever won was against children!

Mr.Grove is a legend. One of the kindest, wisest, most understanding, and truly one of the most stubborn persons I've ever known. Hopefully heaven has the internet so you get to read this Mr.Grove. I miss you very much and man I wish I could talk to you about our president now..... I know we'd be laughing our butts off together over a game of hold em & some cold poor man's margaritas.

My name is J.W. Bell, I was an P.I. operative for Mr. Grove for many years, in many situations. I was a young eager man in my late twenties when I was referred to David Grove. He was the best P.I. in the business, I was told. They were right. David was not only my mentor and friend , but I always knew he had my back if I needed him. I laugh sometimes remembering the sticky situations we would get ourselves in to. RIP my friend you are missed by many. Your friend J.W. Bell

87, a good long life. I met David in Santa Fe New Mexico. I was fresh out of college, not knowing what direction to go. I wanted to know what it was like to be a private investigator. I called 4 or 5 PI's one afternoon asking to shadow them, David was the only one who agreed. I was 22 years old, green and didn't know David from anyone. Didn't take long for us to be great Buds. I worked on multiple cases with David, shot many games of pool with him and learned that life was meant to be lived to the fullest. Cheers David, until we meet again. Michael.

Well Dad, another year's gone by. I miss both you and Mom everyday.
You'd be happy to know that I quit smoking...and drinking too! No more foolishness, but I'm still paying the price for it. 5 months till I'm Hep C free if I live through the treatment.
 Love Always,
  Your son, Stephen

The world lost a wonderful person, and Heaven gained a magnificent Angel.

Dear Grove family,
I wish you peace in your time of loss. I had the opportunity to briefly work with David on the Texas Law Reporter in 2002 and I really learned a lot from him. He was very intelligent and interesting.

He will be missed. Sincerely, Nicole Temple Houston, TX

My dad was an amazing man in so many ways. Most striking was his intelligence and his memory. He could describe in absolute minute detail of happenings going on as far back as 80 years ago and more. As a result, our family and friends have enjoyed hearing stories about his childhood and his many investigation escapades. He described things in such detail that I felt I was there.

He had a love for music. He played the guitar and wrote songs. He sang songs from the 40’s up to modern tunes and had a fondness for country and western music. He taught me the songs by singing them to me note by note, so I could figure it out on the violin. We played the guitar and violin together since I was 7 years old. He loved games of all kinds. He taught us kids how to play cards, chess, checkers, chinese checkers, croquet, pool, ping pong, just to name some of them. He didn’t let us win either!

He had a strong work ethic that served him well as he built his investigation business from the ground up. His dad told him he wasn’t in business unless he answered his phone. He took that to heart and as a result, he was always just 2 rings away. He had self -discipline. He woke early, had his coffee, and exercised. He put on his jeans, western style shirt, bolo tie, and boots and then began his workday long before anyone woke up.

He had a faith in God, which became more important to him as he got older. In recent years, he liked to say the Lord’s Prayer before meals. He often teared up as we played and sang the old church hymns like The Old Rugged Cross.

My mother, Johnnie, was the love of his life and he cherished her all of his life. They shared 50 years of life together and four children. He was there when she was struggling for her life with brain cancer. He sang songs to her, played his guitar, and held her hand.

In every life there are challenges, and he certainly had them. He got more upset about things more than just about anyone I have ever known. My mom had a great way of dealing with him at those times. She would say to us, “Look , your dad is dancing a jig!” In spite of those challenges, he had a big heart, was very generous, and had a deep affection for his family and friends.

I will miss him, especially when I pull out my fiddle and don’t hear that familiar strum of dad’s guitar.

I will always remember Uncle David as being fun! Some of my best childhood memories are with his family. One adventure that stands out was my visit to Mexico City on New Years Eve with them and he tricked me into eating cactus worms !! And we weren't allowed to drink the water!!! I was in a pickle!! I know our family in heaven is having fun with him again!! Praying peace for his family here!! Blessings  Terri Dingler

A good friend that will be missed

David and I played cards and shoot pool almost every week.  David love both of these past times and could shoot a good game of pool in spite of his limited vision and he won several poker torunaments. I always enjoyed his stories and his up beat personality.  His advice about the key to a long life was exercisse and a healthy diet.  We all need to remember this.
