It must be about thirty years ago that I first met David. We were both speaking at the same conference and we were waiting to 'go on' behind the curtain. I was unspeakably nervous. I knew that David was already an experienced and much loved speaker. I asked him if he got nervous. To my amazement, he said he always did. 'But how do you cope?' I asked. He thought for a second or two and then said, with humility rather than arrogance : 'You just have to believe that you have something important to say.'
Every time after that, whenever I have to speak publicly, I have heard his words in my mind, and they have enabled me to go on despite my nerves and speak. He was kind, and generous, and wise.
