October 28, 2014

David Paul Pannek, 57 years of age passed peacefully from this world into the next on January 27th, 2012 to join his parents, Fred and Penny, his beloved Nannie & loving dog Bruno.

David is survived by his daughters ~ Amy, Shannon & Heather. Grandchildren ~ Amelia, Angel, Adri, Ashley, Nathan, Anthony, Zachary, Avrea, Samantha, Deziray, Mateo & Sofia, as well as his loving dog Merlin.

David was born on December 8th, 1954 in Dallas Texas. He soon found himself big brother to four brothers, Rod, Mitch, Mark, and Matthew.

At 12 years of age David became the youngest Eagle Scout in Dallas Texas. He was an Order of the Arrow member as well as one of the first swim team members for Lake Highlands High School.

In 1972 at the young age of 18, he began serving his country in the Army. During his time of service he was stationed in Korea for 22 months during the Vietnam war delivering ammo by helicopter to the front line. He also was stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado on the Mountain Rescue team serving as a medic. August 1st, 1978 he was honorably discharged.

Upon his return to Dallas he became a well known Disc Jockey for local clubs and coined his nickname of Smokin' Dave. In April 1990, Dave opened Smokin' Dave's Rock Room near Bachman Lake which for many years in the 90's was the favorite venue for up and coming metal and progressive local bands. A Google search of "Smokin' Dave's Rock Room" will return dozens of videos and websites all fondly remembering the club, its founder and his place in promoting the local Dallas music scene.

David eventually left the club business and successfully managed storage facilities in Houston and Dallas until his health failed and he was forced into retirement. He spent the last few years tending to his dogs and loving his progeny. He had many vices but no enemies.
