David Eugene Slaughter, 71, of Lanett, Alabama died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama.

Funeral services are planned for Sunday, July 3, at 2:00 p.m. at Lanett Congregational Christian Church with Reverend Danny Spear officiating. Burial will follow at Pinewood Cemetery in West Point, Georgia.

Mr. Slaughter is survived by his wife, Geraldine Guinn Slaughter, his daughter, Betty Slaughter, his son-in-law, Hugh Hogan, both of Lanett, four grandchildren, Kevin Hogan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Audrey Hogan of Phoenix, Arizona, and Heath and Seth Hogan, both of Lanett, Alabama.

Mr. Slaughter was born on Tuesday, June 11, 1940 in West Point, Georgia to Charlie Slaughter and Emma Brooks Slaughter. He was a 1959 graduate of Lanett High School where he was a member of the three-time state championship football team coached by Mal Morgan. After a career in law enforcement, he went to work with West Point Stephens as a truck driver. He worked for the company for 37 years before retiring with 3.7 million miles of safe driving. He enjoyed sports of many types and for the last several years took pride in watching his grandchildren participate in Springwood sporting events. Fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities were among his interests. He also enjoyed a variety of folk art crafts and home improvement projects.
