I wake every morning to one of the sweetest pictures of you sitting along Oak Creek Canyon. A hike we took 30+ years ago after our family Thanksgiving. Here we are again, during that time of year when I think of all the wonderful holidays we shared. Eating until we were stuffed, playing hearts...with you and Aboo trying to "shoot the moon," every chance you got! Then it was one-on-one Aboo versus Dan at gin rummy. The laughter and joy you brought me every day of my life! Not only were you an amazing uncle, but you were my best friend. You never judged, always listened intently and gave kind, thoughtful advice. You were also my greatest influence. Thank you for your love, wisdom and grace. I miss you every day Dan Cane.

I still remember going down the Snake River on a raft - terrified - wedged between Dan and Dick.
I still remember the good times in Marin - with Violet and Metro.
I still remember my stays in the apartment in New York - which Roger would vacate to make room for me.
40 years of memories. I loved Dan so much.

Danny...You always brought a smile to everyone's face, a lilt to their voices, when you were coming/in town!! For as long as I can remember, from the Sixties onward, you brought light, sunshine, smiles, help, support, and comfort to your family. Your brother, Sy, loved your arrival, and Helene was always delighted/comforted/supported by your presence, or voice over the phone. You made a real difference in the lives of Jonathan and Rachel, too, as a much-beloved uncle, and embraced Tony, Nicole, and happily, Simon, as well, welcoming all into your heart. Though we only spent time together here and there...over roughly 50 years, I was always so delighted to see you and be with you, most recently at the weddings of Jonathan and Nicole, and of Rachel and Tony. May your memory continue for a blessing. You are in our hearts forever.

You were full of wonderful stories; many stories about music and theatre. What a sweet nature, warm, giving, loving, a wonderful friend. We spent many precious hours together with my husband, Ed Hill. Sending lots of love to those that will miss you as we do. Claire and Ed

Happiness is a Warm Puppy

January 10, 2015

On January 25, 1963 my uncle, Dan Cane gave me the Charles M. Schulz book, Happiness is a Warm Puppy. Inside he wrote:

For Lisa--
who is the biggest bundle of happiness in the world.
Love,
Uncle Danny

I have held onto that book for over 50 years, every time I read it, it has brought me happiness. During one of my recent visits, I brought the book to read to Dan. When I shared my story he added, "Happiness is STILL a warm puppy!"

I have been blessed, honored to have as a true friend and profoundly influenced by my uncle. He will be terribly missed.
