Dean A. Barcalow, 90, of Burlington, NJ passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 9, 2023 just weeks before his 91st birthday.  Born in Roebling to Frank A. Barcalow and Reba (Smith) Barcalow, Dean was a lifelong resident of New Jersey and influenced the lives of many area residents.

Dean lived a life of service that began with his US Marine Corps enlistment in 1949.  He served the 1st Division until 1953, supporting his country in the Korean War’s Battle of Inchon in 1950.  Dean was a member of Korea’s “Frozen Chosen”.  In 1957, he joined the Trenton Police Department where he served until he retired as a lieutenant in 1984.  Following his time with the Marines and police department, Dean began a second career as a drug and alcohol counselor, working with Judge Kevin McGrory to develop Trenton’s TASC (Treatment, Assessment, and Service Center) program.  Together, Dean and his partner, Jack DeAngelo, and Judge McGrory served over 8600 clients between 1986 and 2010.  Dean was a “Friend of Bill’s” for 43 years and was passionate about helping others find health and happiness.

Dean was a lover of books, quotes and poetry, tennis, baseball and motorcycling.  Dean could always be counted on to share the pearls of wisdom he gleaned from his reading with those around him.  He continued to ride motorcycles until the age of 87, finding peace and joy on scenic rides along the Delaware River.  He loved to find new places in New Jersey and Pennsylvania to explore and shared this passion riding with his daughter. Dean used his love of riding as a metaphor for his life, commenting often “I’ve had a great ride.”

Dean is predeceased by his wife, the love of his life, Audrey Collette (Case) Barcalow.  His brother, Bruce Barcalow; his son Craig Barcalow; and his grandson, Walter Dean Curtis.  He is survived by his daughter, Kelly; his sons, Brad and Dean; his grandchildren, Julia and Jason Barcalow; Courtney Warren and her husband, Ryan; Connor Curtis and Grace Camporeale; and Kevin Curtis; his great-granddaughters, Lillyanna and Amelia Battista; his great-grandsons, Cameron Curtis, and Sebastian and Finn Warren; as well as the many he touched through his work as a counselor.

Services and memorial will be held privately by family.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to: The American Cancer Society or the AA General Service Office.
