His Life

Del's Life

March 12, 2016

Delbert Leroy Schoenfeld was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in the winter of 1924.  He was descended from the settlers who came over on the Mormon Trial.  He was from very strong pioneer stock, and he would need the toughness to survive.  His life was never easy.

He would live through the Great Depression and become part of the Greatest Generation - the soldiers who fought and won WWII.  Delbert's skills as a mechanic were honed by repairing the airplanes that flew the soldiers on missions to Europe and the Pacific in a very desperate time in human history.  Lives depended on the planes being in perfect condition.

His skills were later highly sought after as a printer at the Seattle Times, where he worked for many years.  The job could be stressful when the linotype machines broke down, because that morning newspaper HAD to get out - no matter what.  He could always figure out a creative solution - he had that kind of a mind.

After the war, he left Utah and worked in Montana, where he met and married Felicita Pease and had six children, Richard, Felicita (Sarah), Helen, Rose (Mimi), Chris, and Evan.  He moved the family to Edmonds, where they lived for many years.

After the children grew up and left home, Delbert and Felicita lived in Seattle and enjoyed a long and healthy retirement.  He was always physically strong and active, walking everyday, working out often, and creating and maintaining a beautiful garden.  He played guitar all his life, and after retirement, taught himself to play classical guitar.  As with everything else he did, he did it well.

We will always remember his smile.  When he smiled or laughed he lit up the room.
