Her Life

Delia Alvidrez

March 19, 2021
Delia Alvidrez was born on January 17, 1940 in Saenz Pena, El Chaco, Argentina. Born after her Sister Rosa, she was the second child of Roman Furman and Ana Rudko. She was followed by her Sister Lidia and brother Pablo. At the age of 17, she immigrated to Los Angeles, California in 1957. She married her husband Josue Alvidrez on December 19, 1959. She gave birth to four children Eduardo Josue, Eric Roman, Miriam Nadia and Andrew Jonathan.

She was a parent volunteer for North Ranchito and Valencia Elementary Schools. She became an instructional aide while she earned a Bachelor's degree in Chicano Studies at California State University Fullerton. She began teaching kindergarten at Valencia Elementary School in 1976 and later transferred to South Ranchito Elementary School.

While at South Ranchito she went on to earn her Master's Degree in Education at California State University Fullerton and became the  Resource Teacher for her elementary school, monitoring the sites state and federal categorical programs to include her beloved English Learners. She and her husband Josue fiercely fought for the rights of English Learners to receive instruction in a language they understood while they learned English. They were fixtures at school board meetings to help ensure those rights were unquestioned and implemented to ensure student success. While serving as the South Ranchito School Principal, 1989 - 2002, she continued her dedication to her students and had led to having her site have the highest levels of English Learner proficiency on the statewide assessments. She was honored as the 1999 Regional Administrator of the year for the California Association of Bilingual Educators for her support for English Learners.

She along with Josue set an example of spreading their love of God and their Savior Jesus Christ. She was a founding member of their church, Iglesia Cristiana Fundamental La Trinidad and the missions along the border with Mexico. She taught her children to not look down on those who had less than us but that they had a duty to help others better their lives. Traveling monthly to the Ejido of Mezquital was another norm in the example our Delia set.

Delia’s life revolved around her children. She had to undergo the loss of Eric when he was 10 months old and her son Eddie at the age of 21 after having just graduated from UCLA. She extended her love to all and was a refuge to all family and friends. She was a vital part of her family's lives. She was a mom, a grandma, a counselor, an advisor, an enforcer, an advocate, a pusher, a host, a taxi, a cook, a shoulder to cry on, a cheerleader, a fan, a mentor and most important, an example to all her children and grandchildren.

While in retirement Mrs. Alvidrez was asked to serve as an interim board member for the El Rancho Unified School District. When elected to the position, she continued on as board member serving as Board President, Vice President and Clerk. While on the board she continued her fight for what she considered all of her children and their right to a quality education. Delia Alvidrez is survived by her sister Lidia, brother Pablo, daughter Miriam Hsieh (Tom), son Andrew, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends.
