Dennis Allan Freking, a renowned thoroughbred trainer/owner, passed away on April 14, 2023, at the age of 80. He was born on February 11, 1943, in Erlanger, Kentucky. Dennis had a deep passion for horses from a young age and went on to obtain his thoroughbred trainer license at the age of 21.

He had a very successful career and was one of the best horsemen on the backstretch. In 1971, at the age of 28, he was the leading trainer at Turfway Park and lead the way for several years. He won many races and was widely respected in the racing community. Dennis or D.A. was particularly proud of his reputation as a "great leg man," able to watch a horse move and know exactly what needed to be done.

In his free time, D.A. loved spending time in the track kitchen, the food, the “hustle and bustle” as well as sharing stories with fellow horse enthusiasts. He had a natural talent for storytelling and leaves behind a wealth of memories and anecdotes for his friends and family.

Dennis was the beloved son of the late Leslie J. Freking, aka "Poppa Frek," and M. Louise Powell Freking, aka "Weeggie." DA Freking was preceded in death by several loved ones, including the mother of his oldest children, Sandra Brownfield, his son Phillip Keith Freking, stepdaughter Cheryl Pipes, and three stepsons Greg, Kevin, and Keith Pipes.

He is survived by his brothers, Gary Freking (Nancy), Donald Freking (Brenda), and sisters Connie Freking (Stephanie Ward), and Shelley Freking Hines (Joseph Glass). Children Charmaine Lynn Freking Brandenburg, and Timothy Allan Freking.  Dennis also had two children by Brenda Pipes Freking, daughter Leslie Stahley, and son Dennis Allan Freking.

Dennis also leaves behind seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire horse racing community.

A celebration of life service will be held with immediate family and friends at a later date.
