A Poem and a Prayer for Dennis Zull
March 8, 2021
by David Zull
For Dennis Zull
I wish I could remember the first time we met
The hour, the day, the season
How could we have known then
We would still be connected by family
These many years
Little things meant so much
A laugh, a look, a touch of hand
Always wanting to be independent, in charge
If only I could remember all the conversations
From yesterdays
What I do remember is you joining hands
With family on Christmas Eve
Asking for blessings for the old folks, the families,
The children and the yet unborn
Year after year
And for the dearly departed, our lost loved ones
The club you recently joined yourself
Taking the hands of those before you
You vanished forever from our sight
And our lives
You had a wonderful laugh when you allowed
Your happiness to show
This year no one got to hear it, and you hid your suffering so well
Like that one perfect suit in your closet
For special occasions
You kept your heart tight,
Probably afraid it would be broken
Wrapped in a mystery, shielded in silence
And distance
But you were loved
Now I pray for you, in my own way
With my own words
Wanting you to be at peace at last, laughing
With the angels
Holding hands with all those gone before you
Now with you
The sun will rise tomorrow and bring another day
The moon will shine at night
You are gone forever but we will remember to say
May God hold you in His hand forever and
May you be blessed with eternal peace
