My sincere condolences are sent to you - Pam, Samantha and Camille. I am deeply saddened to just recently learn of Derrick's passing. A gentle voice with a big heart, bright mind, and kind soul has passed through our lives and made an indelible mark on so many. I enjoyed working with Derrick at Conoco, but I am disappointed that we did not stay in closer touch over the years, with Pam Jenkins keeping us updated on how life was going for him and the Hobson family. Prayers are with you as you continue to live life on earth without his physical presence.

The unexpected news of your transition from this life made me feel profoundly sad. It is with a heavy heart that I am reminded that life is transitionary gift that we should all cherish. So sorry that we had not been in touch more frequently (I thought that I was a few weeks ago until I realized that it was not really you).
Over the years, since our days at Tenneco and then at Conoco, you have always been that gentle spirit during the storms in our path. Rest in peace DAH and thank you for being my friend, my boss, and my mentor. younger brother. You will always hold a special place in my heart.
My condolences to Pam and the girls (young ladies now), I am so sorry for your loss. Praying God's grace be with you.

My deepest and sincerest condolences to Pam, Samantha and Camille! Derrick was a very kind, soft spoken person with a huge heart.  There's so much that could be said, but it was already said in his obituary. I considered him a good friend while he was working at Conoco Inc., however, over the years we lost communication. He will be remembered! May he rest in peace.

Pam, before I met you I used to frequently see you and Derrick playing tennis together at Bethesda courts. I admired how passionately you both played and seemed to be having such fun. The gallery of pictures made me smile to see what a rich life you had together. May you, your girls, and the rest of your family continue to enjoy those happy memories of Derrick!

I met Pam and Derrick playing tennis together. They were so friendly and welcoming. Derrick was working to make tennis more accessible to others with various challenges. It was easy to talk with him—my condolences to the family.

Such a pleasure knowing Derrick in the short amount of time that I did. He brought such light, enthusiasm, wisdom, and passion to his work with our organization. He will be truly missed and I wish his family peace through his passing.

Just as Nikki, I remember going to Uncle James and Aunt Bea on holidays eating good food, laughter, adults playing cards and always a football or basketball game on the plasma TV. Ricky had received an awesome chess set and he and I would play a game of chess. I remember Uncle James taking Ricky, Mike and me to the Richmond Coliseum to see the Harlem Globe Trotters.
When I received the obituary in the mail and opened the envelope, my mouth dropped just how much Ricky looks like Uncle James. Hey look like twins.
Even though we haven't seen each other in some time, I will miss his smile and calm spirit.

Growing up, I viewed Ricky as an example of how successful a person could be as a result of academic excellence. He was intelligent, thoughtful and soft spoken. Although I didn’t get to see him often, I enjoyed our conversations, especially about the environment and social issues. May he Rest in Peace.

His Life

A LIFE WELL LIVED [OBITUARY]

April 14, 2021
Derrick Anthony Hobson was born to Hughes Saunders Hobson, Chief Master Sergeant, and the late Delores Hobson, asst. teacher, in Fort Jackson, South Carolina on August 30, 1956.  An intelligent, proud, and, at times, ornery man, Derrick could always be found with a book in his hand and an idea on his mind. Derrick courageously battled Type 1 Diabetes for 57 years of his life, and on April 1, 2021, Derrick earned his rest and went home to the Lord.

Due to his place in a military family, Derrick’s childhood was spent throughout the U.S. and abroad. He had a special love for the time he spent in Alaska. He often said it was the most beautiful place he’s called home. Derrick received his bachelor’s degree from Howard University in 1979. Following his father’s commitment to Greek life, Derrick became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Beta Chapter in 1976. Derrick earned his Juris Doctor degree from Howard University School of Law in 1982 where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Journal.

While in law school, Derrick fell in love with fellow Howard Law graduate, Pamela Carruthers, and in 1985, the two were married.  Together, they enjoyed a wonderful life, culminating in the birth of their purpose for living – their children, Samantha and Camille.  Derrick adored “his girls” and lived his life for them.

Derrick was an accomplished attorney, serving in many esteemed legal capacities throughout his career.   His passion was for environmental law, and he often said he admired Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” because the character dared to “speak for the trees”.  As a law professor at North Carolina Central University, Derrick developed a course on Energy Policy, Economics, and Environmental Law. Throughout his life, he volunteered his legal talents in support of many environmental causes.

Derrick was an avid golfer and tennis player for most of his life. Most recently, as a board member of the Eno Community Tennis Association, he created the annual Althea Gibson Memorial Tournament, in honor of the first Black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. Through this tournament, the Eno CTA raises funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Durham and Orange Counties.

As a board member, Derrick also founded the Duke – Eno Adaptive and Abilities Tennis Program in 2019. This collaboration between Duke University Tennis students and the Eno CTA works to bring the joy of tennis to people with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities. As the Director of Abilities Tennis for the Eno CTA, Derrick created and managed the Abilities Clinics that were held both in-person and on YouTube in times of Covid. He believed that the game of tennis should be accessible to people with all abilities and hoped that the birth of this program would help contribute to the breaking down of accessibility barriers in the game.

Derrick wanted to see the world changed for the better. He had a curious mind, a sensitive heart, and a passion for sustainability. He was a person who would stand in wonder at the magnificence of a beautiful tree, and he taught his children to do the same. He was a lover of history, sci fi, and critical thought. He could talk your ear off and was always one for a corny joke. Derrick was brilliant, tender, encouraging, and loving. He loved God and he will be missed and cherished forever.

Derrick is survived by his loyal father, Hughes Saunders Hobson and his wife Doris, of Fort Washington, Maryland; his devoted and caring wife, Pamela; his loving children, Samantha and Camille Hobson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.  Derrick was preceded in death by his loving mother, Delores Hobson, and his younger brother, Michael Hobson.

"The Steady One"

April 20, 2021
Ricky was always the “steady” one, the intellect. Ricky caused us to pause the we were in his presence because of his steadiness. What a great character trait!

From our time as children to being grown, his quiet laid back personality always stood out to me. The childhood memories will always stand out. Below are the “places” of memories:

Greensboro, NC…I always looked forward to traveling to see Ricky and Mike duding the summer. Rick, Mike, Bobby and Paul and Greensboro, NC. They lived near “War Memorial Stadium” and we would run around there and NC A&T where Uncle Saunders worked. Every time I pass through Greensboro, I think of the times.

Hungary Road…we loved to travel to Mr. and Mrs. Dabney’s house for fun, fun and more fun. Once again, steady Ricky kept us in line while still having fun. We all enjoyed one another.

Hermitage High School…Ricky was a starting linesman in football at Hermitage High…this was significant in that for me in that my cousin started on the football team at a predominantly white school. He also excelled in his studies and I admired Ricky for this…as children these things mattered.

Howard U…Ricky was going to Howard and studying to be a lawyer. Man…this was so Ricky…smart, measured and smart again. I love the fact that he was attending Howard U…an HBCU. Ricky made us all proud. I Yep…it was typical for Ricky that he would be a lawyer.

Chicago Wedding…Ricky asked me to be in his wedding…man I felt proud and honored to be in he and Pam’s wedding. My first trip to Chicago, my first overnight train ride…it was great time.

Raleigh, NC…Ricky and I engaged professionally while he was in Raleigh we talked about opportunities in Raleigh for me and for him in Atlanta. My visit there for an interview was highlighted by the time I spent with Ricky. We had a long lunch catching up on things.

Summed up…Ricky was always an inspiration for me…I somewhat followed his path…I like him left home for college in the DC Baltimore area, I was in Baltimore, a Morganite. He believed that education was the way to success and sodid I. Ricky was very measured and I will always admire him for that. I wish we had more time, I will miss him…and look forward to seeing he and other family members one day on the other side. Thanks cuz…for a life well lived!

Love you man...see you soon,

Paul

My Loving Cousin a Gentle Soul

April 17, 2021
Cousin Ricky and Mike were so much older than I that I really didn’t get to know them until I was an adult. I think by the time we were going over to Aunt Bea and Uncle James’ for holidays or Super Bowl and the famed adult “tunk” card games, they had graduated high school and Ricky was off in college. But as an adult not long out of college, my first trip to Houston for a conference or something, Ricky and Pam hosted me for a couple days. Those pics of their girls with the long braids - it was then. Pam, seeing those photos just took me right back to your home in Houston. I just remember you and Ricky were so gracious and kind to me - I felt so comfortable. I am so sorry for our loss of his kind spirit in this life - still happy he can be joined with his brother, mother, and grandparents. Until we meet again - love, cousin Nikki.

Growing up together in our grandparent’s house, Ricky and Mike were more than cousins, they were more like older brothers. Rick and Mike were polar opposites but looking back they both were major influences for me. Ricky wasn’t much of the party type, but he would go along. Mike was the life of the party, but Ricky’s influence became more neutralizing as I got older.  Although Ricky would hang out and participate to a certain level, you could say he was - the designated driver who made sure everyone got home safe.
I was always an observer and Ricky was always the one to look up to. He was the one who set goals and achieved them. By the time he was set to go off to Howard and become a lawyer, it wasn’t that much of a surprise cause he had accomplished so much by then, the family spent our energy being proud and bragging “we got a lawyer into our family!”
Ricky was always level headed, even keeled and I only remember him REALLY excited was when he and Pam got married and when they brought Sam home to RVa to visit. There were times when the family came together and you could hear him laughing across the living rm. Other than that Ricky was Ricky.

Ricky I’m gonna miss you and I hope you know how much you influenced me to be better.
You’ve made it safely home. Love you!
