Dick was born in McCook, Nebraska on August 26th, 1930 to Jacob A. and Rose Marie (Keen) Unger.  His first 20 years were lived on Nebraska farms (South and West of McCook - near Cedar Bluffs, Kansas); 9 years, the Wall Farm in the Ash Creek Community 9 years (St. John's Luthern Church and the Walther League there), and for 2 years on a farm south of Curtis.

He enlisted for a 4 year hitch in the United States Navy Air Arm in 1950, during the Korean War, serving in: Great Lakes, Illinois; Jacksonville, Florida (Air Fields and Schools); Naval Yard in Brooklyn, New York; French Naval Air Base at Port Lyautey, Morocco; Royal Air Force Airbase, Luqa, Malta; Royal Naval AIrbase at Halfar, Malta and at the U.S. Naval Air Base at Boca Chica (Key West), Florida (Blimp Squadron ZX-11). He was honorably discharged there in 1954.

He breifly attended McCook High School after the eighth grade, but was forced to leave by a severe Asthma illness that required several years to correct. A High School College prep correspondence course prepared the way for passing of the Naval G.E.D.(High School Equivalency Exam), and, after Navy discharge, entrance into the Electrical Engineering Department of TriState University at Angola, Indiana. He graduated with a BSc in Radio Engineering (Communications) in 1957, and began a 36 year Aerospace Engineering Career which covered assignments with Northrup, Lockheed, McDonnell, and Lufkin Research Laboratories in California, Florida, Missouri, Texas and Illinois. He married Imelda Gatt of Sliema, Malta, while serving in the Navy and stationed on the Island of Malta on Sept 26th 1953. Dick and Imelda moved where his Aerospace career would take them and in all locations Imelda made every house a "Home".  In 2002, they moved for the last time and retired in Indio, CA. It was there that they celebrated their 61st & final anniversary in Sept of 2014.

Dick passed away on January 21, 2015 after having battled Prostate Cancer for 12 years. His memorial services were held on January 30th, 2015 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Newhall, CA and he was buried with full Navy Honors at the Eternal Valley Mortuary in Santa Clarita, California.
