An Introduction to Jazz

The Gershwin Songbooks - Love Walked In

While I have many stories to share about my friend Dieter, the most impact on both of our lives was our mutual love for Jazz.  He was most tolerant and fun loving and we spent many weekends together doing crazy things. He knew I loved and had played in Jazz bands in and shortly out of High School so, one particular Saturday in the mid 60's I asked him to come with me to a club in Seattle that offered matinee performances of some of the top name Jazz musicians in the country. The club was located in Pioneer Square and it was called Charlie Puzzo's Penthouse.  This particular Saturday I remember most vividly because Oscar Peterson, a fabulous world class Jazz pianist from Canada, was scheduled to play.  The matinees were kind of rehearsal's for the evening show so they were easier to get excellent seating for.  We arrived early and when the club opened we got to sit next to the bandstand, just to the right of Oscar's piano.  Dieter was in love!  It was a most impressive opportunity to be that close to the artist and truly enjoy the entire experience and the music.  From then on Dieter's interest in Jazz music grew and became a big part of his life. Together we had found one more thing we could share in common that we knew we would love for the rest of our days.  Here's to you my excellent friend... I will miss you forever.   With Love, Courtleigh

My friend Dieter

March 1, 2018

Dear Christine,
I met Dieter the first time in Rio de Janeiro, in a ship company called Libra Navegação. Although I was from the accounting area of the company, and he from the commercial area we had a great relationship immediately. We had very similar business ideas, and a common passion for jazz music. Months later I saw Dieter again in the US when I went to Philadelphia to cancel a contract we had with the Gulf & Atlantic cargo company and to create a new company called Libra USA. I have traveled countless times to the US to accompany the creation of the new company, and also to extinguish a huge Accounts Receivable that has lagged behind the old Gulf company. I was able to receive most of the accounts and Dieter often helped me with this, considering he was from the commercial and knew the customers and the cases. When I was in Libara USA we had lunch almost every day. We were talking in his powerful German sports car, with a manual gearbox. "I hate automated cars," he said, smiling. When Dieter was not in the company, I had lunch with Tom Lloyd, another friend in common. One of those times I was in the US, I went to Dieter's house one weekend. There, I met Cristal his wife and we heard a record from my favorite jazz pianist Keith Jarret. I remember presenting him with the CD of a Brazilian jazz pianist, Eliane Elias. By looking in my old photo albums found two photos we took on this occasion.
Dieter always impressed me with his knowledge of the Portuguese language. He spoke perfect Portuguese. And he knew Rio de Janeiro, and Brazil in general, a lot. Sometimes in our conversations he would tell me restaurants I should visit! He knew more about my city than I did. Impressive. I'll keep good memories of my great friend Dieter. An educated, gentle man, sensitive to the problems of others and with countless stories to tell. I am 66 years old, and I was very sad that he left us. I'm sure one day, "the other side" will find him. Some friendships are eternal. In the meantime, I welcome your agile thinking, your business acumen, and your kindness. Rest in peace my friend.
