This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Dolores Elaine Sherman-Egan who was born on April 29, 1924 and passed away on June 24, 2010. She will be forever in our hearts.

Her Memorial Service will be held on July 7, 2010 at 12 Noon, Skyline United Church of Christ, 12540 Skyline Blvd., Oakland, CA. A Celebration of Life reception will be held at the family home in Castro Valley immediately following the service. Please contact a family member for details.

Dolores was a strong, independent, vital woman, with a generous heart and wonderful sense of humor.  Her company will be deeply missed by many and her passing is grievously mourned by both loving family and friends. Her soul now joins those who have gone before her, beloved parents, sisters, brothers and friends and together they are at final peace.

 In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in Dolores’ name can be made to: The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fund,   http://ww5.komen.org/donate/donateonline.html#memorial or the charity of one’s choice.

A Mass for the Dead will be said in her honor September 13, 2010 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Castro Valley, CA.

Another year and thinking of you and others that have passed. Sadly on the 24th we were attending a memorial for Lori Durkin's brother, Raymond. Hopefully it will be the only one this year but as we get older more friends and loved ones pass on to what we hope is a good resting place. Know that we hold you close in our memories and that you live on in us.

Thinking of you & Stephanie today and missing both of you. 2021 so far has been an interesting year. The vaccines for the pandemic are very effective & the Bay Area is doing well with the number of people fully vaccinated and life is finally beginning to return to normal here. Sadly many countries are still losing thousands of people a day. Hopefully we will have enough vaccines for the entire world soon. Until then we are sticking close to home and enjoying being able to hug family and finally start working shows once again.

Thinking of you on your birthday and wondering what you would think of the global pandemic. It has changed the world in many numerous ways, some good, many bad. The best has been the lack of air pollution, the bane of our modern society. Wild animals are roaming our parks and city streets even in our largest cities. We are visiting more with our next door neighbors and many families are enjoying the time with their families. Hopefully we will get thru this without millions of lives lost and a better respect for the world as a whole.

Missing you as always and hope you are helping Dave accept his new life. I had dreams about your laughter last night when all six of us performed our version of West Side Story for you. I think I was around 7 & Christine 5. We practiced that routine for weeks. Slides under Maureen & Brenda and Christine tossed overhead. What a happy dream I hope it made you smile again.

Thinking of you on your birthday and missing your laughter. This year we spent Easter in Granada and you would have so loved the elaborate processions and floats. You could hear the bells ring throughout the night all across the city, you would have loved it. I missed sharing it with you in person but it sometimes felt as if you were there in spirit.
Love always, Dori

I had a wonderful dream last night. We were in France driving along the Loire River past picture perfect small towns with a castle on the hill like Blois discussing the merits of staying in a castle for the night or a small manor house. It felt so real, I hope you were there to share the memory with me. I love & miss you.

Thinking of you today, as I do on so many days. Five years, and yet seems like such a short time since you passed. Often, I go to call you to check a family-fact, or share a laugh, or just a friendly hello & then remember - she's not there anymore. Good thing no phones in heaven or yours would be ringing all the time!

I will always treasure the personal moments we shared Aunt Dolores. My father once told me that you were one of the most remarkable women that he had ever met. Your love extended to many. Four years have passed but you are not forgotten by those who loved you.

Today the cool rain gently bathed the Bay Area. It reminded me of our first trip to Paris in 1989, how the Chestnut trees, tulips and spires of Notre Dame seemed to glow after it rained. 3 years and still days when it feels like I saw you yesterday. I miss you and love you and hope heaven is glorious.

Clear Creek Memories

August 25, 2019
Mom loved our Clear Creek mountain home and  we enjoyed many summer vacations up there together. We spent countless hours and days sitting alongside the gurgling creek while giant pines gently swayed and whispered throughout the forest surrounding us. Those magical hours we shared together healed our broken hearts and connected our souls after a lifetime of separation between us. This week we will lock the doors one last time before handing the keys to its new owners. But the beautiful memories we created there will live on forever. Miss you Mom

The true meaning of Mothers Day

May 14, 2013
by DL Egan

By : Julia Ward Howe ~ 1870

Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.

"Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm, disarm! The sword is not the balance of justice." Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession.

As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each learning after his own time, the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the proclamation Julia Ward Howe wrote in 1870, which explains, in her own impassioned words, the goals of the original holiday. I know our mother would have loved this, yet I do not think she knew of it.  ~~ dori
Two Poems by Mary Oliver
June 24, 2011
Mom loved the poetry of Mary Oliver, especially the "Red Bird" book. Here are two of her favorites, the bolded section in the second poem, I read at her memorial service.
RED BIRD
Red bird came all winter
Firing up the landscape as nothing else could.
Of course I love the sparrows,
those dun-colored darlings, so hungry and so many.
I am a God-fearing feeder of birds,
I know He has many children, not all of them bold in spirit.
Still, for whatever reason--perhaps becasue the winter is so long
And the sky so black-blue, or perhaps because the heart narrows
as often as it opens--I am grateful that red bird comes all winter
firing up the landscape, as nothing else can do.
Red Bird Explains Himself
"Yes I was the brillance floating over the snow
and I was the song in the summer leaves, but this was only the first trick
I had hold of among my other mythologies,
for I also knew obedience; bringing sticks to the nest,
food to the young, kisses to my bride.
But don't stop there, stay with me: LISTEN.
If  I was the song that entered your heart
then I was the music of your heart, that you wanted and needed,
and thus wilderness bloomed there, with all its followers:
gardeners, lovers, people who weep for the death of rivers.
And this was my true task, to be the music of the body.
Do you understand? for truly the body needs a song, a spirit, a soul.
And no less, to make this work, the soul has need of a body,
And I am both of the earth and I am of the inexplicable
beauty of heaven,
where I fly so easily, so welcome, yes,
and this is why I have been sent, to teach this to your heart."
