My mom disliked her name Doris, insisting she be called Dori. She was orphaned at 4 years of age, found by authorities in an abandoned auto in Chicago. She was found by my grandfather's best friend in an orphanage in Chicago. His name was Frederick, he went by Fritz, he adopted my mom. My grandfather, Theodore, was laid to rest in a Potters field in Chicago because no one was able to claim his body. He was born in Hamburg, he and Fritz escaped Germany together as Hitler began to come into power. My grandfather Theodore met my grandmother, an unwed pregnant 15 year old girl from Ireland in Ellis Island, he was 28 years her senior. Her name was Margaret. After my grandfather's death she disappeared.

My mother's family has a very rich history, we were fractured long ago, but due to my tenacity my mom's lineage will live on.

Be grateful for what you have. Look up, not down, you'll see only darkness, not out, you'll only see other people's green pastures - we've no idea how much manure was needed for their beauty - look up. You will see sunshine, you will see hope, you will see endless possibilities.

My mom is free. My brother and I will miss her until we meet again, to wish her here is selfish, sometimes I feel selfish, more often than not I feel grateful.

In lieu mom wished for donations to be sent to the following charities: Easter Seals, 799 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin, IL 60123 and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

To those that sent sympathy cards, I saw not a one, my father did not share them with me. Please keep my mother's remains in your prayers, her request was that she be scattered in Hawaii, she loved Maui. She had only visited once, but fell deeply in love with the area. Her ashes remain above the mantel in the house she lived in for 28 years, and that was her deepest fear, that she remain boxed for all eternity.

Thank you for your prayers, for loving our mom, and for considering donating to either one, or both, of the charities mom loved.

Godspeed on your holiday season, please keep looking up ❤️
