Her Life
October 15, 2015

Doris Maree Gomez passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Baptist Medical Center-South in Montgomery, Alabama. Doris was born in South Boston, Virginia on October 8, 1925 to the late Dr. James M. Mason and Mrs. Edwina Wilson Mason.

She received her early education at Booker T. Washington Public School, in South Boston Virginia. She attended North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central University) in Durham, NC, receiving a B. S. Degree in 1945. Following graduation she was employed at John Andrew Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Doris met Dr. Clifton J. Gomez while working at John Andrew Hospital.
On December 26,1952, they were married and she later began working
with him in his medical practice until his death in 1973.

She was a faithful and dedicated member of First Missionary Baptist
Church where she regularly attended Sunday School and weekly
services.

Doris was employed with the South Central Alabama Development
Commission in their Senior Community Service Employment Program
until July, 2014.

After her husband’s death, Doris was known for walking just about
everywhere she went. She would pass up rides offered to her and just
seemed to thrive on walking...to work, to town, and wherever she
wanted to go.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her sister Edna M. Mason and her
extended family, Leroy and Pattie Brown and their daughter, Cheryl
Brown and her children Kyle and Max, all of Durham, North Carolina,
several cousins and her beloved Union Springs Community and friends.
