April 15, 2014

With heavy hearts but with total submission to the will of the Almighty God, the Eze Nnama Royal family of Nibo formally wish to inform you that Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma Nnama fell to the bullets of unknown gun men on 27th March, 2014 in Nibo town, Anambra State. The Nnama Royal family, and indeed the entire town have been in mourning over this tragic death of the Owelle of Nibo.

Dr. Emmanuel C. Nnama attended Government College Umuahia, the 'Eton of the East' in its heyday, from 1959 - 1964; where he obtained the West African School Certificate in Grade 1 and the Higher School Certificate 'A' Levels in Physics and Pure and Applied Mathematics. He trained as an Electrical and Electronics Engineer at the Ahmadu Bello University (1965/66 Session) and the University of Nigeria Nsukka (1966/67 Session and 1970 - 1972 after the Civil War) under the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) pioneer Cadet Engineers scholarship. Upon graduation in 1972, he was appointed Communications Engineer in charge of the NPA Apapa Port Complex, Lagos.

Under the administration of his Excellency Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Dr. Emmanuel C. Nnama pioneered the development of systems network that effectively linked up the Ports of Lagos, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Warri, and Tin Can Island with the NPA headquarters in Lagos as well as the NPA London office. This communication system promoted effective ship traffic control, and more importantly it created the basis for the NPA dollar scheme implementation. Hence, Late Dr. Emmanuel C. Nnama was promoted through the ranks to the position of General Manager Communications.

For his leadership in engineering technology and contributions to humanity, Dr. Emmanuel C. Nnama was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Engineering, Honoris Causa, from Morgan State University, United States of America, on May 22, 1983. He was also made an honorary citizen of the city of Baltimore, USA, on May 23, 1983.

On retirement from NPA, the Federal Government recognized the achievements of Late Dr. Emmanuel C. Nnama, and in 1999 appointed him Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Consistent with his track record, he pioneered the development of the regulation standards, frequency licensing and network systems that promoted mobile telephone communications and associated services in Nigeria.

As we plan to bid farewell to our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, in-law, colleague and friend, the family will be highly appreciative of your prayers!!
