Ibo culture

November 10, 2023
When I was a student at East Stroudsburg State College in Dr. Nwokorie's class, I believe he mentioned that he is of Ibo descent. Today I was reading "Hidden in Plain Sight," a book about the Underground Railroad by Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard. In Chapter two there is a paragraph telling the story of a boatload of slaves "from the Ibo culture in West Africa. These slaves, in the year 1822, took a look at what awaited them onshore, linked arms, and waded back into the Atlantic saying, 'Water brought us and water's gonna take us away.' These slaves from Iboland were determined to either walk back to their homeland or die trying. Today, on St. Simons Island, Georgia, a location known as Ibo Landing serves as a reminder to African descendants of these Ibo peoples and of the spirit of resistance inherent in their ancestors. "I wonder if Dr. Nwokorie knew of this story!

Early recollections

April 4, 2011

Ndidi, my early remembrance of your Dad is when we visited your home in Umuahia. He appeared stern at first, then I realized he loved a good joke and was quick to laugh. Very interesting combination!

I remember the delicious "ofe ugboro" that I ate for the first time ever at your home. Fresh okro soup eaten with freshly made oil from the palm. Wonderful!

May the Lord bless, comfort and strengthen you, your Mom and all your siblings. His grace is sufficient!
