Dr. Jennings was the most impactful youth speaker I have used in my speaking agency. I speak of him often when in settings of youth discussions. I did just last week when shared his testimony to a young man who is speaking to young men in prison. I am forever changed because of this man.

Well on November 10 at 10:30 at night 2021, your brother, Bishop Jerry Piscopo went home to be with JESUS and you. This has been the hardest year of my life. You were “brothers from another mother”. He loves you so much as me, Genna & Bree love you and now you both are doing Kingdom together! It may be selfish, but I wish you both were here. He too left a legacy just like you. Knowing that you both are with Jesus makes it a little bit easier and one day we will all see you both again. Love you guys forever!

I was looking through my pictures of you today, Joseph and came across the one taken whee we first met in Lansing Michigan. Our outreach group was looking for someone who could speak to the gang infested Union High School could relate. We arranged to have you come. Standing in front of 1500+ students who were seated on bleachers, you shared your 3 rules. 1. I am your teacher and got you out class. 2. You will look at and listen to me. 3. Do not make me do my 3rd rule. Joseph started telling his story and started connecting like no other speaker could. In the top bleachers, several gang member started a disturbance. He said ok rule # 3. Joseph walked through the students to the top of the bleachers and grabbed 2 of them by their collars and walked them down to the gym floor. He said to the principal “get these two out here”. You could hear a pen drop during the rest of his talk. Joseph was awesome and I even miss him to this day, 15 years later.

In 2013, I took possession of my current location, the former Wesley House in Omaha, NE at the approved request of Dr. Jennings to begin an Omaha Chapter of the RAW DAWGS. So Here I am 7 years later, sited by the City of Omaha has an official Historical Sight with a Community Mural on the entire west side of my church, Mission Church which was included in the property. We have plans for a multi-million dollar project to develop the property for future generations as the Lord leads. Thank you, Dr. J for your obedience to visit this location and inspire me to relocate Compassion In Action according to God's bigger vision. I am $25,000 away from ownership, my building, the church on a block and 1/2 plot of land....I would not have made the plunge if you didn't come to Omaha and encourage me to do it. Rest in Heaven, Dr. J, although you were the 'logical' reason I moved here and thought you would be in the mix of the progress...God is forever faithful. Thank you and yes, I still miss you. peace

Today, I remember my brother, Dr. Joseph Jennings. This week I was reviewing newspaper articles and TV clips reporting his effort in helping Action Wyoming's community effort to curb community and gang violence in suburban Wyoming of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He invested 3 weeks over a period of 1 year speaking to 1000's of students, working in community events, the police department and speaking to churches to help change many lives for the better. May your memory live forever, brother. My life is forever changed and blessed because of you.

Dr.Jennings, I am sure you have invited Mayor Carol Sheets to your party. Also invite my mother Mildred Turner, whom you never met, but prayed for you everyday when you were serving in Wyoming Michigan with her youngest son - me. Know that your influence and methods are employed by many here on earth as we continue to reach out to rescue youth in today's society.

Dr. Joseph Jennings was the greatest assembly speaker I have ever meet and used. He could reach youth like no other. He became like a brother to me. As I go today, like many days, on appointments in communities working on ways to reach youth, I always remember Joseph. To beautiful Lindsay and the children - my love, prayers and peace to you on this day and everyday as you walk with Our Saviour as your strength.

I met Dr. J in 1992 when I went on a inner-city ministry trip with him and a team of incredible Christians. I was one of the only white members of the team and was treated like family. I was around 21 at the time. I got to spend many hours with Joseph and learn about the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. It changed MY LIFE. More than anything else, I learned how to BE TOUGH when life throws you blows, and that a REAL MAN stands for Christ and stands for his family! Most importantly, I learned to NEVER quit. I read his book "Prisoner of the American Dream" and passed it on to a few other young men in the struggle. That was many years ago (21) and MANY of life's blows later and I am still keeping the faith. I went from an under-educated fatherless young man with little respect for authority to a thriving man of faith with a great family and living a greatly blessed life! I went to look up Joseph to send him a "Thank You" and was sad to see he has gone ahead. Looks like I will have to thank you on the other side! Brother Jennings - you impacted my life and your work still lives through me!

RAW DAWGS in Omaha

October 10, 2016

In April of 2012, Dr. J came to Omaha, on his own dime to view property to determine the possiblity of his RAW DAWGS Youth Corps Gang Prevention Program in Omaha and confirm his partnership with Compassion In Action. He viewed the property, spoke to an Urban Plunge Volunteer Mission Group that was in Omaha at the time, in the vacant building and determined, the location was a go. When he left, I Teela Mickles, founder and CEO of Compassion In Action proceeded to secure the property with nothing but a prayer, trusting in God to make a way.  In 2013, we signed a lease to own agreement with the owners of the property where we expanded our services to persons in prison and familites affected by incarceration.  In addition, with the material given to us directly by Dr. J, we attempted to establish his gang prevention program in Omaha, NE as he instructed us and oversaw our progress.  Then in an instant, he was gone.  My heart was broken and for a moment, I felt abandoned with a project that was his own and difficult for me to proceed without him.  However, God knew that I could be trusted with anything that was His plan and I would be faithful to believe if God started it, he would finish it.  Several weeks after Dr. J passed, I received an unexpected financial gift of $90,000 for my organization which was confirmation for me that we were to proceed since Dr. J had given us the okay to begin the program in this new location and we are still here today.  The Omaha RAW DAWGS Youth Corps Gang Prevention has been operating successfully under the leadership of my own grandson, Commander Lucas Mickles and Dr. J's legacy is alive and well in Omaha, NE.

Joseph Jennings in West Michigan

October 25, 2013

Dr. Jennings came to Wyoming, Michigan to help the communtiy address violience issues that were caused by teenage gangs. There had been several drive-by shootings and much gang activity. Mayor Sheets of Wyoming asked me if I knew a speaker who could come and help with these issues. I had used Dr Jennings at other schools in Grand Rapids and knew he would do a great job. After a community collaboration was developed he came in November 2007, February 2008 and May 2008. He spoke to over 50,000 students and 1000's of others in  assemblies, community forums, meetings, jails, youth centers and churches. He forever changed the direction of the city. He always gave a teddy bear to a girl he felt needed it in each assembly. One morning we were hurrying to an assembly and he said "John we need teddy bears". We stopped at a Walgreens and I think bought the whole inventory. I have scheduled many speakers over my 15 years of youth outreach but I have never met anyone who could reach into the heart of student with his love as well as challenge a community to invest in their youth as Dr. Joseph Jennings. I miss you my brother but will see you someday to review again all that God has done!
