A heartfelt tribute to a great couple -Dr and Mrs Ezeka Okafor - late proprietors of Bex Memorial Hospital

Dr Okafor and our late father were both students at DMGS Onitsha and they remained close friends from then on.

He was Chigbo's guardian when Chigbo was a student at DMGS. Dr and Mrs Okafor were like second parents to Chigbo and provided him with pocket money and provisions from time to time. They even asked him not to bother travelling to Enugu during term time. He was welcomed in their home. Chigbo hugely appreciated their love and support, during his time at DMGS. It still means a lot to him.

Also, Dr Okafor once employed Ngozi briefly at the hospital for a company administrative position. This enabled her to find her feet as she transitioned from one state to another, before she moved on. Ngozi has not forgotten this thoughtful gesture.

In his typical manner, Dr Okafor was one of the first responders when our father and husband died, and provided the family with a lot of support. He was there all the way.

Your parents were kind and generous to us; they made the effort to maintain the relationship between the two families. Our family will always remember them.
May their kind souls continue to rest in peace.

From the family of late Dr. F.C. Adi

Doc, I was saddened by the news of your death. It was devastating. I have always admired you right from my childhood days, as a brigade boy. And you have been my role model.
A man of peace who touched many lives through acts of kindness and saved many through his profession. The church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the Knights of St Christopher, entire people of Imo state have lost a rare gem. Goodbye Doc, until that resurrection morning!

Tribute to Uncle Ezeka
Uncle Ezeka was hatched in a poor but humble family but the grace of God and diligence soared him unto fame and fortune, yet he came down to carry the poor and the downtrodden to greatness.

FUNERAL TRIBUTE FOR DR EZEKA ELIEZER OKAFOR

Dr Ezeka Eliezer Okafor was an extraordinary great man, intelligent, humble and respectful.

A man of the people who really cared for humanity, the poor the rich everywhere and every time.
He gave scholarships to many to further their education, free medical treatment to the vulnerable, and to those unable to pay for their medical care.

Ezeka strongly supported the church, his town and the entire community in which he found himself. He extended his generosity everywhere and any time.
Dr Ezeka was great in many ways, my late mother in-law Mrs Agnes Okoli referred to Dr Ezeka –as “Odi nkenke neme ire”. Ezeka was a very good in-law to Ibiaosegbe people as a whole.

A rare gem, socialist philanthropist and dynamic.
He played his part very well.

If all men were like him, surely this world will be much a better place.
“Ogo” you will greatly be missed by man people, but the Almighty God knows the best and is in control. “Ogo” count your blessings, pick them one by one, and you will see how very great God has been to you.

       OGO REST IN PEACE.

A TRIBUTE FROM THE HEART TO LATE SIR DR E.E. OKAFOR, THE OZUO-OMEE OF NEMPI.
May your humanitarian and industrious soul rest in perfect peace! One may ask questions to pinch the words from my heart used in describing the rare gem of our time, Sir DR E. E. Okafor. The news of your demise was a peculiar news, in the sense that you lived a fulfilled life which had been inspirational to some of the younger people of our community, including me. Death is inevitable and unavoidable which every mortal must exchange life with. What is significant is the reel of the way mortal lives his or her life on earth. Your dispositions and inspiration will ever remain in my mind as long as I live and, I will ever be grateful.

You proved that destiny was the fulcrum upon which opportunities were adhered. Your history and philosophy were inspirational to my academic career and curiosity. As a younger child, I did not know that Israel we were being taught from the Bible was on planet earth in the contemporary time, until in the ‘80s’ when the video recording of your visitation to Israel on pilgrimage was played before the congregation at St. Barth Anglican Church Nempi and the religious messages taught. I remember vividly the advice you gave me and my younger sister Chioma Nwano Ikeson in 1983. That particular advice gave rise to moulding me a holder of two degrees in different fields (Economics and Law), while my younger sister became a registered nurse by profession. We will ever be grateful.

If death and life were within the dictates of human, I would ensure that your type lived perpetually for continuation of your work of humanity. My prayer is for you to continue to rest in the Lord until the ‘rapture ‘.

A TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER

My Father, My Benefactor, My Mentor… I lack words to describe who you are to me. You gave me life when it seemed that all hope was lost, you gave me the greatest gift in life . . . Education! You gave me back my life.

Daddy, you told me to find time and visit you with my Family, I was ready for the visit but suddenly I couldn’t reach you on phone, then I got the devastating news that you have gone to be with your maker . . . oh what a life!

Daddy, you were what anyone would want in a father, you saw me through school and gave me a better life. It’s unfortunate that I didn’t have the opportunity to say “Thank You”.

I Love you Daddy, sleep on for I know we will meet at Jesus’ feet.

TRIBUTE TO A SUPER HERO DR. SIR EZEKA OKAFOR

If we are to choose or say, you wouldn't have died but death is inevitable. It is a debt that we all are going to pay one day. As you have started your journey from this world, my prayer is that the good Lord grants you Eternal rest. Though I met you through my uncle then as a young lady, you have been like a father, a brother, a mentor and an adviser to me.
Your candid advice and words of encouragement will be a source of hope and strength to me. I will miss you till we meet to part no more because you are a good man, and epitome of emulation. You are a father to the poor, doctor to the sick and an Icon indeed. What a great MAN.

The lives and times of Dr. Ezeka Okafor can neither be exhausted in words nor concluded in speeches. Its an enduring legacy for all to emulate. The history of Nempi ( his native town) Oru, Orlu zone, Imo State, Nigeria, West Africa, Africa and permit me to include the World would be grossly incomplete without the iconic contributions of Dr. Ezeka Okafor. After all, what is the History of the World, according to Robert Schuller, he opines that '' The History of the World is nothing more than the Biography of great men''.

Dr. Okafor is indubitably a 'Great man' in every sense of the word. Everything about Dr. Okafor succinctly demonstrates the assertion above. In his chosen revered and noble profession as a Medical Doctor, he was a Primus inter Perez. As a Statesman, he was a patriot per excellence. As a Community leader, he was overwhelmingly a Part finder and Pace setter.

Furthermore, as an Administrator, he fulfilled the Words of Abraham Lincoln thus: "that the fundamental purpose of Government is to do for the Society or people what needs to be done but can not be done or so well be done by them in their individual or collective capacities". The milestones (works) done by Dr. Ezeka Okafor as the first Executive Chairman of Oru (East & West) Local Government areas surpasses the collective efforts of the past administrators of the council since creation.

More so, as a philanthropist, his selfless services to the children of men are unprecedented, unparalleled and inexhaustible in details. Beneficiaries are all around us. An attempt to make a list would amount to moulding bricks for the building of a castle. As a husband, he was a metaphor of the word in all dimensions. An embodiment of every woman's desire in Marriage.

Subsequently, as a father, he was s perfect example of parenthood. A father that gave to his biological Children and numerous others, more than he did ever received from his own parents and the society at large. And as a Christian and an accomplished 'Knight' he was an outstanding faithful servant. A believer, an upholder and a doer of the Word.

Thus, arising from his practical Christian background, he was a sacrificial giver, a church builder like in the days of Nehemiah, a Counsellor like Prophet Samuel of old and a preacher of the Gospel. What else can be written about Dr. Ezeka Eliezer Okafor than to say that he was such a rare breed that always excelled wherever he found himself.

For those who knew him, no epistle would be too short to capture his influential personality, but for those who do not know him no epistle would be long enough to convey his essence.

Daddy, for me and most other enlightened mind, you are a reference point. Indeed: you came, you saw and you truly conquered.

Adieu Daddy, Rest in perfect peace with your Maker, The God of Heaven and Earth until the resurrection morning. LA Nkoma.

It is Well.

TRIBUTE TO UNEQUALED ICON SON OF NEMPI.
DR EZEKA OKAFOR

If there was any way to wage war against death, I am sure that both the old and young of Nempi would immediately, at whatever peril, enrol to claim you back from the hands of death.

You were, the illustrious, generous and philanthropist son, who gave Nempi town a recognition and importance when many neighbouring towns were still not known. You did this by returning from England as a qualified medical doctor, and instead of moving to a big city to focus on your own comfort, you put your people first. After establishing Bex Memorial Hospital at Onitsha, you came home to build a hospital for those who were far from a priority for the government of the time. This made Nempi a land mark town in then Orlu division. It facilitated the delivery of health care to our people and neighbours.

You were a person who crossed the bridge with difficulty and made it wider so that the people coming after you, would have an easier path. In the mid-70s, thanks to the scholarship scheme funded out of your own pocket, any Nempi youth who succeeded in University entrance examinations had their university education sponsored. This program enabled many of our youths to graduate from university while they wouldn’t have seen the four walls of the universities if it was not for you. You were one of the principal funder of St Barth Church Nempi.

You offered a listening ear made the time for those who came to you both old and young. I had my own encounter with you as a young student. I came to your office with a complaint when the Postal Agency at Aji closed. I expressed my dismay about our town not having a post office while you were the chairman of ORU Local Government. Instead of walking me out of your office for my effrontery, you encouraged me for my boldness and promised to build a post office for our people. The post office of Nempi was shortly built and commissioned. What else could Nempi ask of you?

You showed love and care to your people and you knew that Nempi loves and appreciates you. You told a story of how young people rallied and carried your car out of a muddy water pothole once they saw you as they exclaimed “Oh! O doctor be anyi”. ( he is our doctor).

You lived an accomplished life, made the best out of the opportunities you had and, most importantly, made sure that your people, your local Government, your church and the humanity benefited from your spell on earth. Unfortunately, you had to rest and, to my knowledge, Nempi hasn’t got another you standing.

You did more than your bit.   Rest in peace

TRIBUTE TO MY MASTER, MENTOR, UNCLE, FATHER, DIRECTOR AND ALL IN ALL DR. SIR ELEAZAR EZEKA OKAFOR.
The man filled with wisdom, he was Bezabel of our time according to Exodus Chapter 31:1-4. God gave Ezeka all good gestures that brought Nempi Community to lime light with peace, harmony and unity. What can I say? Your words are flashing in mind; the Philosopher Dr. Sir Ezeka told me that a boy who could not serve his master should not be a master. He went on and taught me to make my wife my best friend because a time shall come when he would not be found for advice rather my wife would be there.
Infact the vacuum your demise created would be hard to fill. However Ecclesiastics Chapter 3:1-2 spilled it out and as such it is a generational handover. Since it pleased God to call you home, no one can ask questions; rather we believe that you are with Christ in heaven that is our wish and prayer.
My noble adviser may the almighty God grant you eternal rest in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ Amen.
Adieu My Master, Motivator, Director and All in All. Good night.

A TRIBUTE IN HONOUR OF LATE DR EZEKA OKAFOR

(FROM THE FAMILY OF LATE MR FIDELIS EZEYI, MBOSI, ANAMBRA STATE)

The late Dr Ezeka Okafor’s exceptionally kind, homely and humble wife had introduced her husband to the family of late Mr. Fidelis Ezeyi of Mbosi Anambra State when the new couple was still in England.

The relationship started well before Doc physically met Fidelis. Prior to that time, the late Mr Fidelis Ezeyi had by coincidence acted as the guardian of Doctor’s future wife, during the time the young lady was training as a nurse at Obudu Cross River State.

As soon, he got introduced to Late Fidelis, Dr Ezeka Okafor become so generous and caring to the family of the late Fidelis Ezeyi (our father), to the extent that one could easily have concluded that Doc, was very closely related by blood to the Ezeyi family.

When Doc came back to Nigeria, which was about the period of the Biafran Civil War, he and his wife got physically in touch with the family of the late Fidelis Ezeyi, and did a lot to provide for the welfare of the Fidelis family who were at that time refugees from Obudu.

Immediately after the Civil War, Doctor, voluntarily, and happily, rehabilitated our late father, Fidelis Ezeyi and ensured that Fidelis returned back to Obudu which was his pre-war abode.

In view of the hardship that was a consequence of the civil war years, Doctor Ezeka Okafor literally took over the training of Fidelis Ezeyi’s oldest child (Engr Ambrose Chuma Ezeyi). Doctor Okafor took the young Ambrose as his own and ensured that he got university education.

History rather reversed itself, for whereas late Fidelis Ezeyi acted as a guardian to Doctor’s wife in her youth, Doctor himself acted as a very kind guardian to Ambrose, Fidelis’ son. In fact, Ambrose (Engr Chuma Ezeyi) Bernedette (Sr Bernedette), late Victoria, Innocent, Fidelia and Dorathy, all children of Late Fidelis Ezeyi benefitted in varying degrees from the benevolence of Doctor
Okafor and his amiable wife.

Doctor Ezeka Okafor was so humble and appreciative that he consistently and frequently narrated the role Mr. Bex ( District Officer of the Orlu Province) had played in his ( Doctor’s) life and how profoundly grateful he was to Mr. Bex for literally made him the Doctor Okafor we knew.

We, the children of late Fidelis Ezeyi cannot sufficiently express our gratitude to Doctor Ezeka Okafor and his wonderful wife. We very deeply mourn the demise of a very benevolent, kind, open minded, humble and God fearing
man. Doctor had a great sense of humor and those of us who lived with him could attest to these intrinsic qualities of his.

Adieu Doc. And may God bless you. We pray that you and our Late parents have reconnected in the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Our hearts are jointly commiserating with Mrs Okafor , Martin, Chioma, Ezeka Jr, Ugonna, all relatives, relations and friends of the Okafor family.

TRIBUTE TO NWAKEGO OKAFOR (AKA) MISS

Death where is your sting?
Who would believe l would be the one to write a tribute to the life and times of amazing Lady Nwakaego Okafor popularly known among her peers as MISS. She was the ever soft but firm spoken wife of late Dr. Ezeka Okafor, founder of Bex Memorial Hospitals Nempi & Onitsha.

Do not be fooled by her gentle outward appearance, for deep inside the appearance was a great woman of honour, strength,  wisdom, courage, hardwork and epitome of Bex Memorial Hospitals. She was the pillar behind the successes and giant strides of late Dr. Ezeka Okafor whose memories live on in our lives today.

I met Mrs. Nwakego Okafor in Onitsha in the early 70's after the Nigerian civil war. Coming from the vagaries and wastes from the war, Nwakego Okafor took it upon herself to rally all Orlu women living in Onitsha to form OTU -UDOKA women Association.
OTUDOKA became the voice of Orlu women and in time they launched the celebrated Udoka Cultural dance that was the talk of Orlu for several years.

Nwakaego was a women of many firsts.
She was one of the first Orlu Nurses to be trained in the United Kingdom.
She was the first woman to lead Orlu women for several years and many other firsts too numerous to mention.

A doting and caring wife to her late husband, a compassionate mother to all her children, a true friend and sister to many women of her generation including me.

Aka na Akpu Ego 1 of Nempi, you have fought a good fight, you have finished your race. It is time for you to rest in the bosom of our Lord who you served diligently in the Anglican Church all through your active life as Lady Knight Auxiliary of St Christopher.

Naa Na Udo, Jee Nke Oma where there are no troubles and sorrows.
To those you left to mourn you, my prayers is that they work and live with your light that is shining brighter and brighter unto a glorious morning.
ADIEU MISS! ADIEU NWAKAEGO OKAFOR.

When you are opportune to come across certain people in life like Dr Ezeka & Mrs Eunice Okafor, they imprint a great memory in you.

From a humble beginning . Went from Iyienu hospital, Ogidi, to setup a hospital at Oguta road and finally to their first class hospital complex at Owerri Road, Onitsha. I had my secondary education at Onitsha so I should know! It is the height of hard work and dedication!

I cannot forget the lunch I always had with Doc. each time I come around.
Even with his tight work schedules he will insist we have lunch at the hospital canteen. I willingly accept not only for the food but also for the cracking jokes, wisdom and encouragement from him. On one such occasion we had water melon on our table and he asked me if I knew why God made the melon. I said no sir. He said it is for those who don't have water.
This couple stood out as a role model and they have touched many lives positively. Even this day their memory stands tall.

TRIBUTE TO A MENTOR, BOSS AND FRIEND: DR SIR EZEKA ELIEZER OKAFOR.

I must begin by giving glory to God for a life well lived, the rare privilege to come in contact with you, and to say it was indeed an honour to have served you in the capacity that you took me.

Every moment with you was like a time in the lecture room - always ready to teach, correct and inspire humorously.
Observing closely, you were a total package of a man - loving husband to your wife Lady Eunice Okafor, a great father to your children who couldn't ask for more, happy grand Pa, and a naturally born Medical Doctor-cum-Administrator.

As Founder and Chief Medical Director at Bex Memorial Hospitals Limited Nempi and Onitsha, every employee (foreigners alike) was your child, and must know/taught the right/smart approach to work. You abhorred mediocrity and was never tired of directing us aright. You are appreciated Sir!

A prima-facie and Doctor par excellence, you towered supreme among your pearls - evidenced by the numerous seemingly hopeless cases of illness God cured through your miracle hands, the leadership positions you held, as well as your contributions to the field of medical science in Nigeria, communities and the Church at large.

A man of the people: your own Nempi people called you "Ala-eze" because of the impact your life-style made in their lives and your daily life typified Ala-eze.
Your love for the things of God was out of this world. You and your wife single handedly built Churches and contributed immeasurably to the course of Godly works locally and globally.

Above all, you assisted me and myriad of other poor people who thronged to you daily to attain our educational dreams - "it is God that did, it my child, ewoo, we thank God", you would say when thanked.

I pray God Almighty grant your entire family the grace and fortitude to pull through this time and life - it is well!
Ozuo Omee Nempi!
Ebube Dike Orlu!
Oke Nnam-ukwu!
Onwa netiri umu ogbeye!

As you return to your creator, I know your favourite morning devotion theme "I will enter his gate with thanksgiving...", is being echoed by the Heavenly Hosts.

May your gentle, loving, ever-caring and brave Soul rest peacefully in the Lord and rise in Glory, Amen.
Adieu Sir!

CELEBRATION OF A COLOSSUS
The earth has lost an asset, a colossus, a philanthropist, a compendium of knowledge and an icon extraordinaire. The heavens have gained an upright man, a man after God's own heart. The storms roar and the thunders clap as its very own transcends to great beyond, to the warm embrace of the host of Angels and the Almighty God. We the humans celebrate a life worthy of emulation.

Great and eminent men have monuments in bronze and marble set up for them, but this man of divine fire managed in his life-time to become enmeshed in millions of hearts, directly and indirectly, so that all of us became somewhat of the stuff that he was made of, though to an infinitely lesser degree, though I pray to attain such an enviable height.

As i look back at the yesterdays of your fond memories; you are remembered for your great sense of humour, for your flamboyant generosity, for your unequivocal fatherly dispositions, not only on your children but to everyone. Your death griped us all with a saddened yet a happy heart, because you have left a huge impact in the lives of thousands. I can't but smile, knowing your success have produced worthy successors as seen in your children, friends, society and the world at large.

We miss you for the love you gave us all, for your laughter shared; we miss you for friendships forged; we miss you in the defiant moments when you stood your ground - resolute in your faith and purpose...and we miss you, each of us in our own personal ways, for all the special intangible ways that you touched our hearts, ways that cannot be defined by words.

You are not dead, but you transcended. In ages to come, centuries and many millenniums after us, people will think of this generation when this colossus bestrode the earth and will think of is who, however small, could also follow your path and probably tread on that holy ground where your feet had been. Let us be worthy of you. Let us always be so.

Rest well...A well-deserved rest.

Uncle, I’m still in shock as I write this tribute to you, did not know this would be coming so soon. Words fail me to really capture whom you were and what you stood for.
You were my late father's best friend, both of you shared very similar backgrounds and were just the two people awarded the scholarship in the old Orlu division with you leaving for Dennis Memorial Grammar School (D.M.G.S) and my dad for Christ the King College Onitsha (C.K.C).

This relationship found expression in the role you played when my immediate younger sister ACP Nneka Anyasinti Ejinkeonye was getting married in 1985. Today that relationship has outlived the two of you.
I have not forgotten your pieces of advice to me whenever i visited you from my base in America. You were a man of sterling qualities, a devout Christian, a politician cum medical practitioner per excellence.

As we bid you farewell, we pray that your humble soul finds peace with your creator and the good lord whom you served waveringly will continually protect the lovely family you left behind. My brothers and sisters Martin, Chioma, Uche, Ugonna and Obiorah. These are trying times but God knows best.

A TRIBUTE TO MY UNCLE

To call you an uncle is just to follow English nomenclature and biological laws.
You were more than an Uncle to me.
You were a father to me. You were not my father but you fathered me.
You were not an educationist by profession but you thought me the value of education early in life. You were not too rich by worldly standards but humanity, including my very self, enjoyed your philanthropic gestures.

You were a professional physician with a difference, to the extent that even a touch of your hand often made some patients to be cured of their sickness.
You were not God but a mention of “Mnde” as you were fondly called by your late younger sister (my mum) used to spring hope and relief to my mother and her children.

One of your last statements to me was that “there is time and season for everything under the sun; a time to be born and a time to die”.
And with such a comment from you, I knew that you were prepared for the eternal journey. May you find eternal bliss in the bosom of the Almighty God!

DADDY

Doctor, as he was fondly called was mighty in the Lord. A compassionate and humble gentleman. A medical expert, an astute politician, an erudite scholar, a meticulous administrator cum businessman and above all a God fearing philanthropist who sees other people’s problems as his and delight in ensuring that any who comes to him with a burdened heart left light and lifted up.

Those of us whose lives he touched as youths call him Daddy and truly that is what he is. Innumerable are the beneficiaries of his philanthropic gestures which continued even on his sick bed.
His humility is unparallel just as is his humour and openness. His patience and generosity are limitless. Happily these virtues he did impart on his children.
Since life here is temporal, it is necessary that he transits into eternity to receive his well-deserved reward.

Today as we mourn him, we must console ourselves in the knowledge that he lived long and fulfilled his mission on earth. I have no iota of doubt in my heart that he is with our Father in heaven and I know that the love of God “to a thousand generations of those who live him” is certainly on his children.

ADIEU ESQUIRE
ADIEU DR. EZEKA E. OKAFOR: NWOKE OMA

OH! Dr. Ezeka Okafor is gone to the Lord. Esquire, as your friends and Old boys called you.
We shared the same building with your family during the war .Your life showed us Matthew 5 v 8 which says “ Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God “.You have no guile in your heart .
You are humble, loving, caring and unassuming all your life. A man of all ages.
Your benevolence was always exhibited to innumerable people that interacted  with you, even those unfamiliar with you. Bex Hospital has been a Bethesda for the poor.

Dr. Esq. E. E Okafor you were an epitome of philanthropy and Christianity. You gave our family this wonderful benefit of a father, and filled the gap of your friend late Egwuatu Nwalusi. This spirit of philanthropy also earned you lots of recognition at National, State, and Local Community levels, where you worked for God and humanity.

Your love and devotion to God endowed you with the Divine blessing of an amiable wife and blessed children and grandchildren. We thank God that I was able to visited you and your wife last December on return from the USA, and you prayed for us again not knowing that was the last of seeing you. The Almighty God has accepted your soul for you served the Creator.
Happy banquet before the Throne of God.

Uncle onye udo,
Daddy anyi,
Doctor Ezekanamadu Okafor,
We the children of late Lawrence Okatta and our mother find it difficult to write this tribute because it’s not our intention now. We were saddened to the passing away of our uncle and father, but we give thanks to God for the life he lived. We count ourselves lucky to have him as friend, father and uncle.

Daddy your death came when we the children of lawrence uwaoma okatta needed you the most. Our consolation is in the scriptures that there is time for everything, time to be born and time to die. Nobody lives forever.
For those who lived with you, they value that the value they have lost is irreplaceable.

For those who just interacted with you, in the course of life, they know whom they are missing.
For those who happened to hear about you but never got to know you, their imaginations and curiosities will remain indefinitely.
Those of us who lived with you and around you have lost a caring, loving, listening uncle and kinsman, an uncle, father and friend extraordinary. A trail blazer, a beacon of hope with resounding religious background and tenets.

You were such a man with amazing gifts and incredible achievements. You touched so many lives in Nempi and beyond positively with peaceful nature and love of mankind. You were a vessel of inestimable value to all who interacted with you. You were one in a million.

Thank you for living such an exemplary life. We love you and will miss you immensely. The lord loves you and has called. We are prayerful that a peaceful and loving Christian like you will rest perfectly in the bosom of our lord Jesus Christ.

Someone rightly said “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well".

So true it was for our amiable and iconic in-law, brother and friend, Dr Ezeka E. Okafor, who was an epitome of grace, humility and love for humanity.
We cannot forget your ever willing and cheerful heart to give yourself, your time and resources so radically without expecting any accolade or payback.
Your faith in God and marriage was manifested in all your commitments while here on earth especially in your love for God, your dear wife- Eunice Nwakaego and her children. -- YOU LOVED TILL THE END.

Sleep well in God's loving arms as God comforts your family and all you left behind. You will always be in our hearts.
REST IN PERFECT PEACE.
ADIEU "OKE OGOM".
GOODBYE.

My tribute to Dr /Lady Ezeka E Okafor of the Blessed memory.

Born from a humble parents in a community called Nempi in Oru West LGA Imo State. An Anglican product, but Interdenominational. After his academic, as our first graduate in medicine, he returned home to celebrate God's grace upon his long academics process.
At my first glance on him, was love and compassion for his people .He refused to be Lord nor portrayed himself with pride / arrogance, instead the burden of his people consumed his life. He went out like David unto Goliath by attacking illiteracy. Hence his massive scholarship from primary to university cut across his town Nempi, annexed to Bible theological school.
He blessed his community and across with a clinic which he later upgraded to full Hospital, as charity begins at home. Community development, he was the architect!

I’m writing about this legend who refused to be Alpha and Omega of Nempi .Go to Nempi you would discover that every family has up to five graduates’ .Dr Okafor who refused to be the only graduate and medical doctor, your good works of love and compassion speaks for you and your beloved wife.
I learned from you the practical meaning of, for better for worst....
You are a Genius. You shall ever be green in our hearts
Nempi Love's you.
Continue to Rejoice in the presence of the Lord till we meet to part no more.

Dr. (Sir) Ezeka and Lady Eunice Okafor though have passed on to eternal Glory, yet memories of their selfless service to their Local communities and humanity at large lingers on.

The works of good people immortalizes them at death and so they have both immortalised themselves by their vision, kindness to people in need, their immense contribution to the delivery of medicare services particularly to native land and contributions to social development projects.

If it was possible, we would have preffered you stay with us forever, but since it pleased God to call you back to him, may His wish be exalted and may He grant eternal rest unto both of you and let perpectual light shine upon you two. May your souls continue to rest in peace, Amen.

Mummy and Daddy were so kind and caring. The love they both shared, they extended to everyone that came in contact with them. Unique Parents indeed, excellent role models. You made my friendship with Ugonna so special and today we're like sister. I often pass by the residence in Onitsha which was my second home and each time, the moments we spent together always brought back good memories of both of them. And we look forward to meeting again at the resurrection morning. You're Forever In Our Hearts.

Dr. Sir. Ezeka and Lady Eunice Okafor were my 'second' parents. They loved me unconditionally. They were my guardians while I was in secondary school at CKC Onitsha.

I will be forever grateful for their tenderness and great inspiration and insight to the issues of life.

Dr. Okafor was the quintessential role model. And it was said that: "if you learn nothing under Dr. Ezeka Okafor, you will never learn again"

May they continue to rest in the bosom of the Lord.

Amen...

Daddy and Mummy as I called you; you are both very special people I have ever come across. Your love and care towards me when I last visited Onitsha with your daughter Ugonna, who happens to be my friend, continues to linger on. I was shocked to hear of your demise but I am ever grateful to God because you are resting in a better place from all your toil. May your souls rest in peace in Jesus name. Oh...they flew away
They lived their lives like a candle in the wind. Storms and wind could not quench their flames.
Their memories still live among us, too hard to forget. Their voices are heard at every gathering of the church. With little or know introduction, every new comer in the the church will see their impact
We must continue to mortalise them for the next generation to know that it pays to serve God.
Like angels they have flown away...but their memories live on

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE FROM NEMPI AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY TO THE FAMILY OF LATE DR. EZEKA OKAFOR.
This world is truly a temporary plane of existence. With very heavy heart and a deep sense of loss, the traditional ruler, executive and the entire members of the above mentioned autonomous community sympathize with the family of Late Dr. Ezeka Okafor. We know that death is an inevitable end to all mortals but it is sad and painful that the Late doctor died the time he supposed to reap the fruit of his labour. We equally acknowledge the vital role he played in the community at large. The demise of our mentor has created a very big vacuum in Nempi Autonomous and the entire Nempi Ancient Kingdom. His philanthropic life and historical antecedents to the community should not be forgotten. We implore the entire family of late Dr. Ezeka Okafor to be condoled and to take solace in the Lord. May his gentle soul rest in peace. AMEN

Daddy, I miss you afresh every day. I still can’t imagine how people count years when it feels like you just left this morning. I love you so much. The only thing that has changed is that I am not crying as much anymore. I rather smile when I think of you and mommy, I think of the best life any child could ask for that I had on a platter of gold without asking. You were the best couple, parents, and friends yet. Your records are outstanding indeed.

Lady Eunice Nwakaego Okafor, – Matron- as she was popularly called, was the fibre and fulcrum around which the Ezeka Okafor family revolved; a true life depiction of a veritable human anchor. While Dr Okafor with an ever sagacious mien opened the vestal for all and sundry, and built an estate anchored on humanistic ethos, it was Lady Eunice Nwakaego Okafor that ensured that those successes endured beyond the immediate environment. She stood behind her husband with unparalleled devotion to business and enduring love, spurning the yarn and ensuring that their blessings – a life’s mission- stretched to the limits of their reach.

As a Matron, she was an administrator per excellence, whose abhorrence of profligacy provided the steeled resistance to wastefulness, and the prudence that guaranteed optimal resource control, a tonic for any successful endeavor, be it family or public business enterprise. Mrs. Eunice Nwakaego Okafor strove positively to shape her world with little room for chance; indeed a success based on “solid personal achievement”. A connoisseur of knowledge, ever willing to lend an ear and stretch a hand to uplift the under-served in accordance with her husband’s principle of service above self.

Lady Nwakaego, though soft spoken, was determined and dedicated to her children; she remained a beacon to her heirs and advocated unmitigated pursuit of excellence. A mentor who groomed nurses and midwives in the best ethics of her profession, a Christian whose compassion remained boundless with outstretched arms to many in need. Lady, Matron Eunice Nwakaego Okafor shall be remembered for her vision, entrepreneurial spirit, compassion and excellence in all her devotions.

As a benefactor, her marks remain indelible in my heart; May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace in the Lord, Amen.

TRIBUTE TO EXAMPLARY ICON, DR. E.E.OKAFOR BY Hon. Egwuagu Nnanna

The mournful looks worn on our faces today indicate grief, that something grievous has befallen us in the death of our own gem and icon of our time DR. ELIEZE EZEKA OKAFOR.

This departure signifies sunset in Nempi. I have said this because death and the consequent burial is a long night that will never find day.

Otherwise my take in that is that we shall not mourn and even if we do, not like those who have no hope. To leave so many legacies like DR. Okafor did to answer the supreme call, which, by the way, is inevitable, is not to die, for he continues to live in our mind and memory.

Many have attested to his good deeds that it bears no repeating to avoid reproducing his biography here. However, one thing beggars repeating, he did much, did enough, achieved a lot that he did. not only left his footprints on the sands of time as the cliché goes, but the footmarks point to the right direction acting as a guide to us all.

A lot may have been written and will be written in eulogy on this awesome man.
I can however, provide a unique and useful insight into his humanness, humility, generosity of spirit as well as his enviable social, Christian and family life.

What is DR. Okafor’s driving philosophy? As one very intimate and close I make bold to say that his driving philosophy was based on Christianity because scriptures say that the righteous would shine brighter and brighter. And to this brightness there is no end until God says stop.

Let no man think that DR. Ezeka Okafor started off in life as Medical Practitioner and founder of Bex Memorial Hospital we see today. Nor was he born with silver spoon in his mouth. The truth is that he was not born into power and privileges in both traditional and modern spheres. It was just by dint of hard work and the Grace of Almighty God that he attained very enviable height in all aspects of life, I dare say.

He was at each juncture well focused and never allowed his background to keep his back on the ground. That way he overcame all limitations and overran all hindrances and impediments to sower. And in his true characteristics and nature, and apparently to show gratitude to his creator showered unwavering empathy and commitment to the poor and voiceless.

Need I say more, instead of morning let us celebrate our exemplary icon and showcase his achievement samply documented in his Biography launched a few years back to celebrate him at 80 years.

By this we encourage his children in particular and Nempi people in general to put up a foundation that will continue to billow the fire of his good works and may be, his intentions.

Yes his intentions. Here was a man who never slowed down but was showed down only by age and debility. Even at that he had an eye in whatever is being done, his advice taken seriously. Why?

All of us who were opportuned to have a closer interaction and observation of the man Dr. Ezeka Okafor know he thinks deep, thinks strategically, utter statements on community affairs diplomatically, he positioned situation in such a way one does not make many mistakes.
A philanthropist and leader per excellence.

I stop. Let me first justify these uncommon virtues which he amply demonstrated in his deeds and works for our Nempi community by listing just a few.

1. Formation and founding of Nempi development union way back in December 1963.

2. Ensuring our children started (restarted) primary education early post Biafran war through levy collected by NDU.

3. Deployed his medical expertise and facilities (by way of Bex Memorial Hospital, Nempi) at his roots at the most auspicious period to save his people from the ravages of war and poverty. These facilities were made accessible by endowing foundation in various names and style to cater for the less privileged.

4. Offered scholarships more pronounced at tertiary education level to indigenes of Nempi (even beyond). At my last count there were seventeen beneficiaries of University Scholarships in Nempi alone.

5. Post Office: Dr. Okafor single handedly built an ultra-modern Post Office at Nempi.

6. First elected Local Government Chairman of the large ORU Local Government Area (i.e. the present ORU East and West) in 1976 – 1979.

7. Church Matters: Trained Priests of Nempi extraction for the Anglican Communion. I am sure of at least four presiding at various locations in Nigeria.

- Championed the building of medium sized church at St. Barth’s Anglican Church Nempi (1977-1979) and before his demise spearheaded conception and financing in the building of an ultra-modern and gigantic church housing St. Barth’s Archdeaconry inaugurated just a few days back.

- Built and donated to the Anglican Communion, Our Saviour Church, Eleh.

I have forgotten I said just a few, so let me stop again.

For reasons of the above and many more like the first ever tarred road crossing Nempi, modern market in Nempi, first few electricity poles seen in Nempi, he was honoured as we do in this clime with various titles – Ebube Dike of Orlu 1987, OzuOmee of Nempi.

I mean, I left out all his academic honours, honours from religious circles, honours from such circles like Rotary and other Clubs, honours from professional bodies and associations.

They were as numerous as they were earned and deserved.

Honestly this man is in a class of his own. A complete gentleman, humane and humble. Unblemished career, very generous for private and corporate causes. We lost a colossus, one in a million. His memory will remain evergreen in our hearts.

I sincerely commiserate with the family of Dr. Elieze Ezeka Okafor and console ourselves on his death, albeit at an appointed and ripe age of 84 years.

May your soul, my mentor and benefactor rest in the bosom of our Lord. Amen.

A TRIBUTE TO MY BELOVED UNCLE BY LADY, MRS CECILIA OKOLI (NEE ANYASOR)

“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure”

When I received a phone call that my uncle died, I was dumbfounded. I cried out in a loud voice, “How are the mighty fallen.” DEE as I fondly call him touched my life so dearly when he returned from London where he spent some years, studied and became one of the most famous Medical Doctors in Nigeria and all over the world. My uncle was given the warmest welcome by the entire men, women and children in Nnempi. He was known as Dr. E. E. Okafor. He was very caring, loving and highly loved by everybody.

My uncle demonstrated his love for education and his town by offering a scholarship fund to two Elementary school scholars in Nnempi, one person from Ihite-Nnempi and one person from Ezioha – Nnempi. In this exercise, I passed the set examination with the required standard and became the beneficiary from Ihite- Nnempi. Through his scholarship, my school fees for Elementary Six at St. Barth’s CMS School, Nnempi, now known as Western Nnempi was paid in 1963. From this time he started calling me “Ada m nwanyi” my adopted daughter and I call him “DEE.”

He had great influence in my life as a growing young girl in my town – Nnempi.
In 1972 after my Secondary School Education, my uncle employed me to work at Bex Memorial Hospital at Oguta Road, Onitsha as his Typist, Book-Keeper and Receptionist until later 1973 when I went to Teacher’s Training College, Ogbunike. At that time, my benevolent uncle gave another Scholarship but this time it was for anyone who could gain admission into any named University. This exercise was a great opportunity and favoured a lot of young boys and girls who had quest for university education in Nnempi. I learned a lot from the way you lived your life by helping those in need.

DEE, you are a great philanthropist. Your love for God and service to humanity can never be over-emphasized. You built Bex Memorial Hospital Nnempi Branch so that the old men and women in Nnempi Community and the neighbouring towns can receive proper medical attention at little or no cost. You also built Post Office and good roads to mention a few, for the convenience of all and sundry.

DEE, you played a vital role when I was getting married at Amadehi-Ubulu. You handed me over to my husband, Sir Benjamin Okoli on my Wedding day at Emmanuel Anglican Church, Ubulu Oru-West LGA, Imo State. Your last Word to my family is that we should live in Peace. You recently dropped this message to one of your daughters and she rightly delivered it to me in U.S.A, where I live with my family. We will never forget you!

My family and I love you so much but Almighty God loves you most. He knows why he called you now. May you rest in the bosom of God Almighty and in perfect peace. We will miss you, Dee! Adieu, until we meet to part no more.

EULOGY FOR A GOOD DAD BY NOEL ADIMIKE

Way back in 1973, the city of Onitsha like the whole of Igboland was just recovering from a devastating three years of massive destruction called the Biafran War. It was in this ruin that I arrived Onitsha as a fresher in Dennis Memorial Grammar School.
One of the earliest friends I made in DMGS was Martin Okafor, the son of Dr. Sir Eliezer Okafor. We were in the same class and hostel and our bonding was seamless and effortless.

As I got acquainted with the city, I quickly discovered that even in the ruins, some hospitals had sprang up. I also discovered that most of these hospitals had as their Medical Directors, old boys of DMGS such as Bex Memorial Hospital – Dr. Sir Eliezer Okafor, Toronto Hospital – Dr. Walter Eze, Menax Hospital – Dr Tim Menakaya just to mention a few and of course the General Hospital had Dr. D.B.A Ofomata as the Senior Medical Officer. I was like come on, is it only medical doctors that are produced by DMGS?

Now, that was the setting when I first came in contact with Dr. Sir Eliezer Okafor. Martin and I were in Lugard House and our house was situated along Oguta road, the same road as Bex Memorial. The junior boys were as of duty meant to go weekly to our campus in Obosi to keep the environment clean because the campus was meant for very senior students preparing for their A’levels. Owing to this, we had ample opportunity to visit Bex Memorial as we trek to and fro Obosi.

One thing that struck me each time we visited Daddy was his very calm mien, he was so gentle that you can’t fail to notice it. As he speaks to us, I will feel like my own Dad was talking to me. He had this aura of a guardian angel that was there to shepherd, protect, and provide for us. Of course, as little boys then, the purpose of our weekly visits was to replenish our pocket money and which Doctor never failed to do. Doctor had a good heart and was a natural Dad.

His life style epitomized and exemplified humility, compassion, empathy, forgiveness, courage and his philanthropy was unparalleled. He remained an active member of Dennis Memorial Grammar School Old Boys Association and participated especially in the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1975 which made a deep impression on some of us that today we have kept the light shining.
Doc you will be fondly remembered and I thank God for a fulfilled life and may He grant you eternal rest. Amen.

Chief Martin Okafor, the family of Late Chief Sabastine & Georgiana Odenigbo of Amorie Ubulu commiserates with you and your siblings as you bid farewell to your father Dr. Ezeka Eliezer Okafor.

Our parents had a very nurtured and healthy relationship with your parents. To say that Dr. Okafor was a visionary, will be an understatement and to say that he was a philanthropist will not be an exaggeration. He was a true son of Nnempi, a good Christian, a man of few words whose humility radiates every room that he enters.

His enduring courage to set up Bex Memorial Hospital in his home town despite the environmental challenges at the time must have accounted for saving many lives’s in our Local government and the state at large. He was not just a physician but a Caregiver both in intrinsic and practical sense. He never turns patients away because they could not afford to pay.

As you bid farewell to your father be rest assured that his journey on earth was purposeful and as you lay him to rest, he is just completing the phase of our physical existence.

He left a lot to be remembered for; therefore, you and your siblings must do all that you can to carry on this wonderful legacy.

May his soul rest in peace.
