TRIBUTE TO EXAMPLARY ICON, DR. E.E.OKAFOR BY Hon. Egwuagu Nnanna
The mournful looks worn on our faces today indicate grief, that something grievous has befallen us in the death of our own gem and icon of our time DR. ELIEZE EZEKA OKAFOR.
This departure signifies sunset in Nempi. I have said this because death and the consequent burial is a long night that will never find day.
Otherwise my take in that is that we shall not mourn and even if we do, not like those who have no hope. To leave so many legacies like DR. Okafor did to answer the supreme call, which, by the way, is inevitable, is not to die, for he continues to live in our mind and memory.
Many have attested to his good deeds that it bears no repeating to avoid reproducing his biography here. However, one thing beggars repeating, he did much, did enough, achieved a lot that he did. not only left his footprints on the sands of time as the cliché goes, but the footmarks point to the right direction acting as a guide to us all.
A lot may have been written and will be written in eulogy on this awesome man.
I can however, provide a unique and useful insight into his humanness, humility, generosity of spirit as well as his enviable social, Christian and family life.
What is DR. Okafor’s driving philosophy? As one very intimate and close I make bold to say that his driving philosophy was based on Christianity because scriptures say that the righteous would shine brighter and brighter. And to this brightness there is no end until God says stop.
Let no man think that DR. Ezeka Okafor started off in life as Medical Practitioner and founder of Bex Memorial Hospital we see today. Nor was he born with silver spoon in his mouth. The truth is that he was not born into power and privileges in both traditional and modern spheres. It was just by dint of hard work and the Grace of Almighty God that he attained very enviable height in all aspects of life, I dare say.
He was at each juncture well focused and never allowed his background to keep his back on the ground. That way he overcame all limitations and overran all hindrances and impediments to sower. And in his true characteristics and nature, and apparently to show gratitude to his creator showered unwavering empathy and commitment to the poor and voiceless.
Need I say more, instead of morning let us celebrate our exemplary icon and showcase his achievement samply documented in his Biography launched a few years back to celebrate him at 80 years.
By this we encourage his children in particular and Nempi people in general to put up a foundation that will continue to billow the fire of his good works and may be, his intentions.
Yes his intentions. Here was a man who never slowed down but was showed down only by age and debility. Even at that he had an eye in whatever is being done, his advice taken seriously. Why?
All of us who were opportuned to have a closer interaction and observation of the man Dr. Ezeka Okafor know he thinks deep, thinks strategically, utter statements on community affairs diplomatically, he positioned situation in such a way one does not make many mistakes.
A philanthropist and leader per excellence.
I stop. Let me first justify these uncommon virtues which he amply demonstrated in his deeds and works for our Nempi community by listing just a few.
1. Formation and founding of Nempi development union way back in December 1963.
2. Ensuring our children started (restarted) primary education early post Biafran war through levy collected by NDU.
3. Deployed his medical expertise and facilities (by way of Bex Memorial Hospital, Nempi) at his roots at the most auspicious period to save his people from the ravages of war and poverty. These facilities were made accessible by endowing foundation in various names and style to cater for the less privileged.
4. Offered scholarships more pronounced at tertiary education level to indigenes of Nempi (even beyond). At my last count there were seventeen beneficiaries of University Scholarships in Nempi alone.
5. Post Office: Dr. Okafor single handedly built an ultra-modern Post Office at Nempi.
6. First elected Local Government Chairman of the large ORU Local Government Area (i.e. the present ORU East and West) in 1976 – 1979.
7. Church Matters: Trained Priests of Nempi extraction for the Anglican Communion. I am sure of at least four presiding at various locations in Nigeria.
- Championed the building of medium sized church at St. Barth’s Anglican Church Nempi (1977-1979) and before his demise spearheaded conception and financing in the building of an ultra-modern and gigantic church housing St. Barth’s Archdeaconry inaugurated just a few days back.
- Built and donated to the Anglican Communion, Our Saviour Church, Eleh.
I have forgotten I said just a few, so let me stop again.
For reasons of the above and many more like the first ever tarred road crossing Nempi, modern market in Nempi, first few electricity poles seen in Nempi, he was honoured as we do in this clime with various titles – Ebube Dike of Orlu 1987, OzuOmee of Nempi.
I mean, I left out all his academic honours, honours from religious circles, honours from such circles like Rotary and other Clubs, honours from professional bodies and associations.
They were as numerous as they were earned and deserved.
Honestly this man is in a class of his own. A complete gentleman, humane and humble. Unblemished career, very generous for private and corporate causes. We lost a colossus, one in a million. His memory will remain evergreen in our hearts.
I sincerely commiserate with the family of Dr. Elieze Ezeka Okafor and console ourselves on his death, albeit at an appointed and ripe age of 84 years.
May your soul, my mentor and benefactor rest in the bosom of our Lord. Amen.
