ForeverMissed

This memorial celebrates the life of Dr. Richard Hall Hood Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, doctor, and military veteran. He left this world a much better place than he found it, and his legacy lives on through all the many lives he touched over the years. This site will continue to be updated with photos and stories as we mourn his loss and share our memories, so please check back often.

He was an extraordinary man who did more than most ever dream of attempting. He directly improved literally thousands of lives, using his medical expertise and surgical skills to deliver babies, save the dying, and heal the sick. He was a pioneer in his field, responsible for some of the first open-heart surgeries and organ transplants.

What truly made him great was his compassion for others and sincere desire to help them achieve their dreams and ambitions. He genuinely loved people from all walks of life and wanted to see them succeed. He used his personal resources to fund college scholarships, invest in local businesses, and support worthy charities. He was a man that grew up in a small town with limited options and resources, so he never forgot how much hard work it took for him to reach his own dreams. He did everything he could to make that path a little easier for others, working all his life to pay forward his own prosperity.

He was a kind man with a gentle sense of humor and a mischievous streak. He loved knowledge and learning, and he refused to sit around taking it easy when there was work to be done and new horizons to explore. Although he was always fascinated with other nations and cultures, he loved living in a small Texas town and spending his weekends walking the beach along the Gulf Coast.

But more than anything else, he loved his family—and we will always love him.

It was a year ago today we lost you, Gramps. A day hasn’t passed since last Christmas that I haven’t thought of you and missed our talks. You had such a huge impact on everyone close to you, and those that loved you continue to feel your loss deeply. I hope you and Dolores both know how much you’re missed.

I would not be who I am today without you, Gramps. Your encouragement and support as I chased my dreams made all the difference. I am forever lucky to have had you in my life, and I will never forget everything you taught me. I hope your heaven is a pristine sandy beach on a warm summer morning, as gentle waves roll in and seagulls call to each other in the sky.

I started working for Dr. Hood in 1989. I learned so much from him. I worked as a medical Asst/lab tech for 10 yrs. I quit to go back to school, completed my schooling and came back to work for him for another 10 yrs as a LVN. He made us feel like family, our kids grew up together with his grandkids. Best boss I ever had. Don’t get me wrong when he was mad he would look over his glasses and say “I’m gonna shoot you!” and laugh. We never did it again! I still to this day remember how he liked his coffee, 2 spoons sugar and 2 of creamer. He will be truly missed.

Dr. Hood was a kind and thoughtful man. We remember all the good times when Dr. Hood and Aunt Dolores would come to visit family and friends in Fort Worth. Our Family knew Dr. Hood as a brilliant man who gave us his undivided attention and made us feel appreciated and valued as a person. He would discuss any topic you brought up with keen perception and the utmost proficiency. He always made us feel welcomed every time we visited them in Pearsall, San Antonio or Ft. Worth. He was truly a blessing and will be missed dearly. May God help us find comfort in knowing that Dr. Hood’s BRIGHT LIGHT will shine on us all. We Love You Dr. Hood

His Life

Introduction

January 6, 2021
It's not an easy task to summarize everything Dr. Hood accomplished in his 94 years. What follows is a brief account that will be expanded upon later with more detail....

Dr. Hood provided health care services to South Texas communities for almost fifty years, starting as a surgeon at the La Salle and Frio Hospitals from 1968 to 1992. In 1991, he opened a chain of medical clinics with an office in Dilley that expanded to include locations in Cotulla and Pearsall. He retired in 2017, ending a medical career that spanned nearly seventy years. Dr. Hood was a military veteran who served our country as a Navy lieutenant in the final years of WWII before returning home to study medicine at the University of Kentucky. He went back overseas to serve during the Korean War, then transferred to the United States Air Force and interned at veterans hospitals in Oakland, San Fernando, and Los Angeles. He was chief of surgery for Hospital Parks Air Force Base in California and became a renowned thoracic surgeon that conducted many of the first open-heart surgeries in history. He was a founding member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, published numerous scholarly works in the field of medicine, and traveled the globe to share his expertise across Europe and Asia. He continued to serve his country in the early years of the Vietnam War before retiring as an Air Force colonel in 1968 and starting his private medical practice.

Gramps Had Clearly Read Mark Twain

I remember visiting him at his seaside condo one summer with my brother Ryan. We had a great time enjoying the beach, going for a swim, and eating too much shrimp. After a couple of days being lazy, he revealed the condo's kitchen sink needed some basic repairs. He slyly made the work seem like a fun activity, and soon had Ryan and me crawling underneath the sink with a wrench to learn basic plumbing. Tom Sawyer had nothing on Gramps.

Power outage at Hood Medical Clinic

On a hot summer day we were seeing patients, we had celebrated a co worker’s birthday the week before and her helium balloons were ready to be trashed. She released them out the side door at the clinic when she let them go they floated straight to the transformer of the light pole causing a loud bang! The electricity went out for an entire block!! He came out and said what happened? We innocently said we don’t know sir. He opened the back door, looked up and  says “Marissa aren’t those your birthday balloons that were on your desk? “ oops we got caught! He looked over his glasses and said “I’m gonna shoot you” lol and continued to see patients with all the doors open so we could have some light!!

Our condolences to the family of Dr. Hood. May our Lord give peace and strength to all.             In 1973 Dr. Hood performed a lifesaving C-Section on me which also saved the life of my baby....for which I am very appreciative.  I was fortunate to have then worked with him in  this same hospital when I  became a nurse. Dr. Hood was always kind, patient, and caring.  He was a great asset to this community and surrounding towns. We missed him when he retired and I know he will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
