DR FEMI BAMMEKE: TRIBUTE TO A MAN WITH A BIG HEART
By Adedoyin Soyibo
Dr. Femi Bammeke was a man with a big heart, one with no guile at all, a man who cared a lot, in particular, for the downtrodden. He introduced and spearheaded the Prison Ministry of the Methodist Nigeria, Bodija Ibadan which periodically visited the Agodi Prison to preach the Gospel. Through this Ministry, many former inmates accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Some of them came to testify to having met the Lord Jesus after their release. A soft-spoken man, Dr. Bammeke was never a fair-weather friend. He was a man who stood with his friends through thick and skin. When I had my health challenges, he visited me several times and encouraged me. He will be sorely missed by many. Indeed, the Prison Ministry of the Church, will miss an indefatigable leader of no mean repute. Many church members will miss his soft-spoken counsel and encouragement; apart from members of the immediate and extended family. May God grant Dr. Femi Bammeke eternal and peaceful rest; and make a place available to him at the right hand of Jesus Christ in Paradise.

'Grandpa', 'Grandpa' as I fondly call him lived a fulfilled life and affected so many lives positively.

Since year 2010 that I knew him in Ode Remo and up till few months to his demise, he never stopped to check on my family welfare.

Grandpa Bammeke was an epitome of love, a counselor and a giver per excellence. He wants people around him and always willing to assist them.

Giving to individuals, giving advice to the weary and rendering support for the work of God was paramount in his mind.

When my family was going through a difficult situation in our marriage, grandpa visited my home and counseled both my wife and myself and to the glory of God we found succor in his word.

I know his demise will create a big vacuum in the family but i want the children to take solace in this Yoruba hymn
'Aiye yi ki se tiwa'
Bi o ba pe titi
Awa yio ku.

I pray God will keep all the children and in-laws in peace.

Adieu Grandpa Bammeke

Till we meet and part no more.

With love from,
Very Rev & Mrs Isaac Afolabi

My earliest recollection of you was visiting you with my Dad, not sure I recall where now, probably Ile-Ife. I also recall your visits to our home and how my young mind genuinely thought you were my father’s cool brother. Your friendship with Dad taught me that indeed there are friendships that evolve into brotherhood. You never lost your humor and your laughter remained just as I recalled from childhood. Refreshing..
Being a restless spirit, I dreaded the long prayers and conversations whenever I visited, but each time I always had some insightful revelation to ponder on deeply. I am glad for the times I got to experience your caring spirit especially when Toluwa had consecutive surgeries. You would visit and sit with us and put our minds at rest with ease. Your strength during Dads illness was such a steadying anchor and gave me so much peace each time I returned to Lagos worried about Mum and Dad. That Dr Bammeke was there also, always brought relief. Thank you for being such a kind and caring person. I am certain you’re resting. Rest on in the arms of our Lord whom you so excellently represented.

Dearest Uncle Femi from the moment that I heard that you had taken ill my family and I never stopped praying for you, it however pleased our father in heaven whom you loved and served till you took your last breathe to call you back home.
Heaven welcomed an angel but an earthly loss.
Uncle I thank God for the strength that God gave you to face the many challenges and you overcame them one by one.
David had you in mind when he wrote the words in Psalm 42 Vs 1: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God.
You sought after the Lord dearly and stood firmly on his words and promises even when the storms were raging.
Thank you for living out the scriptures, thank you for the care you showed not only to all your family but everyone that God brought your way.
God bless you dear Uncle and continue to sleep peacefully at the feet of Jesus, Adieu

Daddy,

Your passing hurts so deep it can't be fully expressed in any form. You took on the responsibility of taking care of 'us' all as far back as I can remember. The horn had stopped blaring occasionally at 5pm for about a year before you passed on but I will forever hold on to that memory. 'N lẹ rẹ o' ☺️ will always cause me to smile and say 'Baba Bammeke' for it was one of your favourite way to greet. I will always shed some tear if I pass through Akobo or you are spoken about in the past. But I will bear on mind thay you are resting and smiling with your darling wife. Both of you were the best!

Don't ever worry about us anymore, we will always make you proud and all you have to do now is smile down at us.

Sun re o. Bàbá rere, ènìyàn àtàtà.

Dearest Uncle Femi , you will be greatly missed . You had so many attributes , it will take a whole book to recount . Indeed heaven has gained an angel who walked the earth in human form with so much love to give , so much kindness and buckets of wisdom. You were an outstanding and compassionate Dr , a dedicated Dad and husband, a God chaser, a rock of Gibraltar to your siblings especially my Mum. Uncountable times you will visit and had a word of encouragement , scripture to share or just recounting the good old days and discussing how things can be improved in Nigeria. Uncle you have run a beautiful race, left a great legacy in your wonderful children, it is time now to rest in the bosom of the lord that you loved and served so dearly .Good night and Sleep well Uncle Femi. Dr Samuel Bammeke,
Your life was a blessing to me and my family. Meeting you in 1991 and working under your leadership for six years up until 1996 groomed me to become the personality I have become now. Even as a grand father I have never forgotten your advice and continue to utilize your words of wisdom freely shared with me as a boss, leader and mentor. You were an exceptional peace lover and peace giver. May God Almighty grant your soul eternal rest and your immediate family and friends the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. Rest in Peace.

Uncle,
Our relationship was extraordinary; you were my father, my brother in law, my mentor, my foremost confidant and my best friend. I never missed the absence of my father because you filled the gap for me. Thank you for being there for me at every stage of my battles even at the expense of your life. I am sad to see you leave so soon.

Your faith in Christ Jesus was deeply unfathomable, I watched as you bravely fought life’s battles with the word of God, you were the bravest of heart I ever knew; you taught me the beauty of sacrificial giving and how to take risks with positive mental attitude; with your death, I have become liberated from the fear of death because I know I will see a confidant like you again on the resurrection morning.

Adieu uncle, till we meet again on the resurrection morning.

Dr Samuel Olufemi Bammeke, our beloved uncle, great encourager, his love and support for his sisters knew no bound. My daughter Andrea would always say he was so comfortable to talk to. His positivity in spite of all he had been through was so admirable. He was loved by many and he cared for many .
He had an immense dedication to God and the church and also the less fortunate . We thank God for the honour of knowing him. Thanking God for his life and praying for God’s grace on his children and grandchild. Adieu Uncle . Rest in perfect peace. From the Oyefeso family

2 Corinthians 5 Your crown of glory and home in heaven secure.

Dear Father, friend, adviser, bible digging partner, but most of all faithful soldier of Christ, what better example could one have had of a true Christian life.
You shunned worldly things of the flesh and went for righteousness.
I remember growing up all the weekend coaching classes we had in the garden and how you will come down from your station even late in the night and take me for different entrance exams, we travelled a lot it was always an adventure.
Your last words to me was simple, straightforward a message, I didn't understand then but now I do. You simply shouted my name loudly “Bunmi” it sounded like a wake up call, an urgent call to arms or a summons!. I heard father loud and clear . I know the task at hand and I know the love of God shed across in our hearts will never fail. I was dreaming the other night talking with you and mum I was trying to show both of you what I was doing....so far.... and it was so real. I didn’t even remember you had gone in that moment you were both with me. No wonder they say loved ones never leave, you are always in our hearts. I am a soldier of Christ and have set my face as flint looking unto Christ the author and finisher of my faith as you have always taught and prepared me. Thank you father for showing us the narrow path it will never be easy but it’s worth it. John 15v13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends... this you did sacrificially always giving in plenty and in little of your time, self and wealth. Never taking a thought for yourself . 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8, 1 Corinthians 16:14 . Adieu Papa , I commend you unto God, thank you for everything and see you again on that bright day! Your loving (Du ro nibi o!) Daughter, Bunmi.

My dear Father, Friend, Doctor, gist partner, Disciplinarian, prayer partner.
Dad, you quietly went to the great beyond, I spoke to you that i was coming home again to check on you, i prayed for you and you replied Amen.
Daddy, I thought you will rise again , but you rose in a better place.
our last deep discussion was on your bed and I wanted you to rest but you insisted you wanted to talk.
Dad I will make you and mum proud.
However, all our underground runs, who shall I do that with again, we had one that we started but remained an unfinished business, I will try but I believe your prayers will make it easier for me Dad!
Words fail me...
In your death Dad, you are still making impact. Rest on Dad.

Your Naughty Baby! who will I disturb again Dad, even when you were weak you still answered me till the end.
Rest on my great fighter, a man with a heart of love. I miss you so much Dad.
One word i can use to summarise you is this Bible passage;
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Matthew 5:9 KJV

You know how well to engage anyone and ensure you point them to Jesus.
You do not major on the minor, you see the good in every one and situation.
I can not forget how you say it 'a n ba Jesu rin rin ajo' meaning you are journeying with Jesus.
Your life is full of testimony and i am glad you left an indelible mark on me, Yes!
I miss all our gist, even though there were some you would have told me more than once i listen all the same with rapt attention.
You care and love deeply.
I love you.
Keep resting till we meet to part no more.
With Love from Rumide Tosin your son

Here lies our consolation.
Beloved brothers and sisters, we want you to be quite certain about the truth concerning those who have passed away, so that you won’t be overwhelmed with grief like many others who have no hope.

1 Corinthians 13 "without love i am nothing".

Through you and mummy i learnt practical love & selflessness.

Daddy you surely left your foot prints in the sands of time and in the hearts of so many people you touched. You touched so many lives in a positive way one can't explain.

You left a very rich legacy of selflessness, love, humbleness, integrity and faith. You have passed the mantle over to us and the race is left for us to run as you have finished yours ,finishing strong & fulfilled.

You came, saw & conquered. We shall keep the flag flying high with our faces raised high up with love & integrity as you always taught us to stand for what is right & just.

We would miss you and all your words of wisdom and love but we know you are in a better place, in the bosom of the lord.

To humanity a Great General of God has gone to rest. A vacuum hard to fill.

Love always .......your son

The death of someone close to us leave us shocked with grief. The truth is that those we love are never truly gone. The body may have run it's course, but the soul lives forever. I remember the part you played when i lost my dad, your words and bible based encouragements. "Whatz up dude" that's how I always start our conversations anytime you pick my call, and you will reply me" omo o ni jogbon yi ". I will really miss all our gists. I am happy you've impacted so many life and fulfilled your purpose on this planet earth. You are far away from this sinful life to a better place. Continue to rest on my D.doc. Adieu papa.
