A Friend, Doctor, Prayer Warrior

March 17, 2014

I met Dr. Stakley many years ago at Crenshaw Christian Center.  I had the awesome opportunity to sit on the Executive Board with him.  My family started going to see Dr. Stakley (affectionately called DOC) and found him to be a warm, caring physician who treated the whole person: spirit, soul and body.  Doc was a family doctor -- and might I add that there aren't many of them left.  He listened to you, prayed for you, and treated your illness.  I know God heals and he uses the hands of man to do it.  Doc allowed God to use him to treat his patients.  He was also an example of Jesus with skin on because he connected with the patients, he showed genuine concern for us, he prayed for us, and he encouraged us.  Then he would prescribe what we needed for the illness.

My husband was seeing Doc because of his heart condition, arthritis, and a battle with gout.  I recall on one visit that Doc encouraged John and let him know that there are many that have worse cases of gout and their limbs are deformed because of it.  He told my husband that he could get through his challenges with his heart and other illnesses by taking his meds, keeping his blood pressure in check and following Doc's simple orders.  John highly respected Doc and I think sometimes just went over to the office  just to get his opinion and prayer.  He always felt lifted when he left Doc's office.

In September 2013 John had a stroke.  I called Dr. StaKley and kept him informed of John's progress.  When he was released from the nursing home, he went to Doc whenever he was not feeling quite right, and Doc was always there for him.   Doc noticed that John was a little depressed, and he gentle and kindly ministered to him  to lift his spirits and get him back on track.

We will truly miss the doctor, friend, encourager, and the prayer warrior that Doc was to us.  We know he is rejoicing in Heaven because he has an opportunity to see Jesus face to face and he has rewards beyond what we can imagine.

GRATEFUL

February 25, 2014

I am so grateful to Dr. Stakley for being heaven's hands when I needed them.  Prior to the time I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus, I would go to Dr. Stakley's office totally fatigued, sick and in pain.  One day, I imagine he could see I truly needed some quick medical help.  He directed my husband John to take me to Bellflower Medical and he would meet us there.  He cancelled appointments just for me!  I knew I was really loved by my doctor at that point.  I was acutely attacked in my body and I don't know who possessed the most faith for my healing Dr. Stakley or my husband John.  I had around the clock care from some of the best professionals at the hospital, not to leave out my great friend Naomi Whiting, who slept in my room while I was in the hospital.  She would get up everyday and go to work, get off, change clothes and come back to stay with me.  God has truly blessed me with wonderful friends.  That's how I saw Dr. Stakley.  He was a friend to our family.  I told him everything.  He was such a wise man, full of Godly counsel - and he gave it from the heart.  He told me I was a walking "miracle" because he had other patients' with the same condition who couldn't walk and sometimes didn't even know they were in the world.  I came through - hallelujah!!  I am managing the Lupus quite well, thanks to Dr. Stakley.  He always stood on the Word, had faith and always encouraged me.  I absolutely don't believe there is another doctor who will care for me the way he did.  I am so grateful for having a doctor who gives great medical advice, lays hands on you and prays in the spirit and with the understanding.  He said what he meant and meant what he said and did it with such grace.  My kind of man!!!  He and my husband are so much alike.  I will miss him so much.  Thank you Dr. Stakley for the example you set in marriage.  You never know who's watching you.  You always cared for and treated Cynthia  like the queen she is!!  John and I have watched you for nearly 25 years and have emulated you and Dr. Price.  We were married at Crenshaw 23 years ago and it's the best thing that ever happened to us!  Dr. Stakley will never be forgotten in our hearts.  There will always be a special place just for him there!!  Farewell for now kind, gentle Dr. Stakley.  When all God's children get together, what a time, what a time, what a time!!

SPECIAL GIFTS FROM A SPECIAL MAN

February 20, 2014

Faith and Patience were the two gifts this man gave to me.

Starting out as a young inexperienced entrepreneur, I had just opened a small pharmacy down the street from Doctor Stakley’s office when we met. I can remember calling him a couple of days later asking if he could send me a few patients to which Doc replied  “OK, I’ll see what I can do, but in the mean time READ YOUR BIBLE”. Now , to be honest, at the time his response  seemed a little  disingenuous, but I took my friends advice. After a few months of little by little being faithful to my new assignment , I stopped focusing on the patients I didn’t have and started to realize how blessed I was to have those who were entrusted to my care. My patience and my business begin to grow. Twenty five years later Doc has sent over a thousand patients to Short Stop Pharmacy and that has obviously changed my life and the lives of my family forever.

The bottom line  was he trusted me with his patients. He held open the door and gave me an opportunity   to be successful, and I’ll always love him for that. Doctor Stakley being the religious  man that he was, understood the importance of treating a patients spiritual health  as well as their physical and mental  problems. I believe this talent was the main reason so many people were drawn to this man. He was my business partner, my mentor, and my friend. He will forever be missed and his light will forever shine in the hearts of everyone who was blessed enough to have crossed his path..PEACE GO WITH YOU MY BROTHER!!

The Miracle

February 20, 2014

The night after my wife, Beverly, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, January, 2004,  Al and Cynthia were at our house to hold and comfort us. We held hands while Al prayed for Beverly's recovery. We have just celebrated the 10th anniversary of that diagnosis, and Beverly is absolutely cancer-free. The MIRACLE occured. There has never been a better friend in this world that Al Stakley.
