I met Dr. McCarthy almost four decades ago when he and his family moved into the same neighborhood in Tema. He and Nelly’s children, Angie, Michael and Miriam became good friends as we played together, went to some of the same schools, did Tae-Kwon-Do, rode bikes, swam and spent a lot of time together.
I have a lots of fond memories from those days. The whole family was very welcoming. One memory that I will always cherish. The McCarthys had a wonderful standing piano in their home which I enjoyed playing whenever I visited. As an eleven- or twelve-year-old energetically working those piano keys, I was convinced in my mind that I was playing some of the greatest classics, but in retrospect it must have been quite a raucous noise at best. Doc will come home from work and find me creating one of my ‘masterpieces’, and as only a patient loving father can do, give me the warmest smile and leave me to it. The interaction was always warm and encouraging, and one that still brings a smile to my face.
As 1 Chronicles 29:15 tells us, “We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the land…”, we take consolation that Doc has gone to a better place. As we leave this land behind, we live on in the hearts and memories of the loved ones we leave behind.
Wishing God’s strength, comfort and grace to Nelly, Angie, Michael and Miriam with the trust that we shall see daddy again someday.
God Bless
